Nomura interview (Famitsu) reveals new details about KH3 and 2.5 ReMIX, announces KH franchise expansion

Recommended Posts

An interview with series creator Tetsuya Nomura is in this week's issue of Famitsu, in which he reveals new details for and speaks about HD 2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts III, and plans for the future of the KH franchise. You can read it below, thanks to Andriasang's Ghost and KH Outsider

- Kingdom Hearts -HD 1.5 ReMIX- for PS3 was announced at the 2013 Tokyo Game Show in September 2012 and released six months later in March 2013 in Japan. Kingdom Hearts -HD 2.5 ReMIX- was announced in October 2013, but yet sixth months later in April 2014 there is no availability date for it, let alone a release.Tetsuya Nomura: Yes. Development on the second HD collection is progressing slowly but surely. The Osaka team who worked on the first HD collection is now working on both the second and undergoing full production on KH3 at the same time, so as you can imagine, this has put a hindrance on its development.- Of course.N: As well, there is the possibility an employee may have accidentally spilled ramen juice on the hard drives containing the games and their assets, ruining them and causing us to have to develop them from the ground up again. (laughs) Of course, such an employee would've been terminated. (Nomura puts on a serious face.) Nevertheless. we're still working for a 2014 release so please be excited.- Many of our readers have been wondering if Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III will be present at E3 this year. Both games made their introductions at the event last year, after all.N: I can confirm that both will be at the expo. KH3, particularly, will have a new story trailer, a departure from the previous tech demo and gameplay trailers, which will finally shed some details on the game's plot.- Can you give us some hints as to what we can expect?N: The end of Kingdom Hearts 3D explained that seven lights and thirteen darknesses will do battle in the Xehanort Saga's final chapter. Many fans have assumed that this will mean that Terra, Ventus, and Aqua will have to be saved to serve as three of the lights, but that is not so. Lightning, the popular character from the Final Fantasy XIII series, will play a major role in Kingdom Hearts III, and her and several forms of her will be part of the seven lights, thematically fitting as her name is quite literally "Lightning." (laughs) The idea to include Lightning in the game came from my good friend and colleague Motomu Toriyama, who was barred from being involved in any future Final Fantasy titles as his games tarnished the company's name. However, this did not mean he couldn't be involved in Square Enix's other franchises, so he came to me and asked if Lightning could be added to KH3. I can also confirm that a sequel to the popular DS title The World Ends With You is in development, and is being directed by Toriyama with Lightning featured as the main character.- In the case of Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II, additional content was added through Final Mix releases. With the advent of online stores and DLC, will bonus content for KH3 be available through physical means or will you take a more modern approach?N: All additional content for KH3 will be released as downloadable content. We will be taking aspects from Square's highly successful iOS titles and using them in KH3 through the form of in-game purchases. For example, you will be able to replenish both your health and magic bars once for the modest price of 100¥ if you do not wish to work for it. As well, you will be able to purchase all of the Keyblades from the start of the game for 300¥ a Keyblade for maximum enjoyment. More details for this are to come soon, so please be excited. For those who prefer physical goodies, however, we are preparing a Final Mix version of Kingdom Hearts 3D, which will be the final KH game brought to spectacular high-definition for those new to the series. It will be bundled exclusively with copies of Kingdom Hearts III for the Xbox One. Originally, the plan was to include it with both the PS4 and Xbox One versions, but our good friends at Microsoft showed us that the American dollar is indeed stronger than the Japanese yen. (laughs) Please be excited, Xboners.- Is there anything else you would like to share with us today, Nomura-san?N: Yes. Currently, there are plans to expand the Kingdom Hearts franchise beyond the video game space! I will be overseeing a Kingdom Hearts film currently in the pre-production stages. This exciting new project was originally envisioned as a computer-animated film done in the style of the series' FMV openings as a collaboration between Visual Works and Walt Disney Animation Studios, but when we approached them, Disney reminded us of how Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within went, and instead convinced us to do an action-packed live-action movie as that is what is hugely successful with the public these days. As I feel Kingdom Hearts is a series with a lot of style, we looked for a director who would be able to pull off action very stylishly and found one in the form of American filmmaker Michael Bay, who will be formally approached for the job later this year when he finishes his work on Transformers: Age of Extinction and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Despite being a primarily live-action film, Donald and Goofy will be rendered in a realistic CG style and voiced by Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy respectively. Sora will, of course, be played by a real actor, and we are eyeing Shia LaBeouf for the role. LaBeouf-san has proven himself to be a very talented person who can pull off a wide range of emotions, so I believe he will do very well in capturing the essence of Sora in this adaptation.- That's very interesting! Thank you for taking the time to do this, Nomura-san.N: You're very welcome. (laughs)

Funny how this came out on April Fool's Day, isn't it?* April 2013 Nomura interview* April 2012 Nomura interview Edited by J. Severe

Ehhh.... not bad. I see you've made use of some of my ideas though >_>

Whoever wrote that should have had Jim write it instead.

And they should have had you work your magic with your screenshots.
