This video came out a couple months back, but I just recently saw it. Before I post the link and explain what its about, let me just say that Shane Koyczan is a very talented poet and individual and I'm very glad that he made this video. I haven't seen any of his other work, only bits and pieces, but I plan to after this. Now, what this video is about, if you didn't catch it, is trolls, and how much of an issue they are in our society. And no, I don't mean trolls like those people you see on YouTube comments being immature or making stupid jokes. These trolls are the ones who drive people to depression and suicide, the type that are perfectly okay with anything awful, especially doing awful things onto other people. As the video points out, you can draw from the mythological beings called trolls, the ones that hid under bridges and were rarely helpful to human beings at all, to what we call trolls today, because that is exactly what our modern trolls are capable of, and frankly: this is something that should not be tolerated at all by anyone that can be considered a decent human being. I know the end of the video showed an image of a guy blocking a troll, but that doesn't solve the problem really. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, because honestly, it's what you should do if you ever come in contact with a troll. However, in reality, It doesn't matter how many trolls you block, more of them will come back in hordes. The best we can do is just act right and encourage other people to act right as well; that should at least put a dent in the issue. Speaking realistically, of course, I can't guarantee that if we all follow this mentality, all the trolls in the world will disappear in the next, I don't know, year or so, but frankly: nobody deserves to be treated like this by trolls or any other people. I wouldn't even wish this sort of thing on my own worst enemy, and I can guarantee that anything I've ever said or done, even some the more drama-filled stuff you've seen me get into on this very forum, that even slightly relates to this type of behavior was never done to break down another human being just because I felt like it. So based on that, we can at least give it a shot. And before some you think that just using the whole "don't feed the trolls" schtick, or you think that this entire video and the point its making is all for nothing, then I'm afraid you're ignoring the problem. And frankly: ignoring the problem doesn't solve anything. It allows to it fester and fester even more profoundly into our society. Believe it or not, we as a society have integrated technology and the internet very strongly with our society. This is serious shit. I should know too, but I used to be ignorant too; in the past, I made a thread about bullying, both cyber and normal, bullying in general really, and why I thought it was stupid how certain people go about "stopping" it in our modern age. Even though that thread was deleted, I still stand by what I say, because I personally would never fall for anything like what the video describes. I'm sure some of you feel the same. But you see: not every person is like you and I. I've learned that we may be able to deal with it, but some people can't. Like I mentioned, people have been driven to depression and suicide because of people like this. Humans have limits, some less and more than others, so I nor you should expect others to be as strong as we are. That's all I have to ramble about. Just to clarify, this is not directed at anybody or anything like that; I literally saw this video today based on the intention of just browsing around YouTube. Also, I saw a review of this video beforehand and it got me interested, especially since I love poetry. If you can, I'd recommend you spread this video around, to anybody you know. After all, the more people who understand, the better. And don't forgot to tell me what you think about it below.
