Since Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII was released, director Motomu Toriyama, lead scenario writer Daisuke Watanabe and game design director Yuji Abe have been extremely quiet. We've literally only heard from Toriyama once since then: On December 27, 2014 in a developer survey with 4Gamer.net, Toriyama said “My next title is in well underway in development. We'll be able to announce it in 2015, so please look forward to it!” The question is, what are they working on? Nearly two months ago, Square Enix president & CEO, Yosuke Matsuda confirmed a new JRPG for home consoles will be revealed at or around E3 2015. He was likely talking about Toriyama's title or simply Star Ocean 5. In an interview with Famitsu.com, Motomu Toriyama confirmed he was in Business Division 1, which is headed by Yoshinori Kitase. This Business Division structure started in December 2013. Of course this is no surprise since these two have worked together since 1999 as director & producer respectively and even before that on Final Fantasy VII in different roles. So of course, whatever Toriyama is directing, Kitase is of course producing. Other staff very likely to be working on Toriyama's title include the following: Yuji Abe (Game Design Director) Nobuyuki Matsuoka (Battle System Director) Daisuke Watanabe (Scenario Writer) Masashi Hamauzu (Composer) All four have no announced projects at Square Enix, all four worked on the XIII trilogy and the last two worked on the FFX series as well. Now the question is what are they working on? The platforms appear likely to be PlayStation 4 & Xbox One since business division 1 will have no announced projects when Mobius Final Fantasy releases very soon (looking like next month) and divisions 2 to 7 each have at least one new game in development for PlayStation 4. Is their new project related to an older entry such as X or VII? Is it a new Final Fantasy title? Is it a new IP? Is it a new Parasite Eve or dare I say it, Front Mission? Hopefully we find it out soon whatever it is.

Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda has revealed that they're revealing a new Japanese role playing game for consoles later this year. This follows the news that Motomu Toriyama, the man who has directed more Final Fantasy games than anyone else ever alongside being on the Final Fantasy Committee will be revealing a new title in 2015. Toriyama himself confirmed his new title was in development in December and that it will be revealed in 2015, but likely begun development early in 2014 following Lightning Returns and X/X-2 HD Remaster. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster has been a great success selling over two million copies worldwide on PlayStation 3 & PlayStation Vita in addition to the 14 million copies sold on the original PlayStation 2 versions of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster will be released on PlayStation 4 in May. The HD collection also includes an audio drama that continues on after the events of Last Mission and was released alongside a official novella both of which lead up to some pretty big stuff that makes a sequel seem obvious. But even in the case it's not X-3, personally I'm very excited by another game by my favourite director and most likely producer with the man that was behind the highest selling games in Square Enix history, Yoshinori Kitase.

Toriyama, the director of division 1 said his new title will be announced this year. Some people believed since division 1 is also working on Mevius that they would not be able to do a title on the scale of Final Fantasy X-3 but this is not true. Division 1's lead staff are not working on Mevius. Eg. Nojima is writing the scenario not Watanabe. Toshitaka Matsuda, the division's 2nd art director is serving as art director. That leaves the division's leading staff to work on Toriyama's title, this includes. Yuji Abe (Game Design Director) Nobuyuki Matsuoka (Battle System Director) Isamu Kamikokuryo (Art Director) Daisuke Watanabe (Scenario Writer)
