I thought about it, but the translation might actually be inaccurate. By “the player’s effort” Nomura probably meant that Aqua will be saved in the main storyline... if that’s the case, the “player’s effort” would just be to play the game. The plot seems pretty straight forward to me right now. - Sora goes rob Olympus Colosseum to regain his powers - Sora travels many worlds to master the Power of Waking and restore the lost characters - Lea and Kairi train to effectively use the Keyblade in battle (we don’t know how much they’ll be useful... I don’t see them becoming masters AKA guardians in so little time.) - Riku and Mickey try to access the RoD in order to save Aqua Obviously, this is the general plot that will probably get way more complicated during the game.

It can’t be an illusion. Mickey and Riku are wearing those magical clothes that should shield them form any kind of darkness harm. I think that it’s the real Aqua possessed by Darkness. I’ve said this in other posts as well, but I think that she succumbed to darkness by her own will and decision. Mickey once told her that Getting out from the RoD is a difficoult task because the door of darkness doesn’t allow light to pass through so she might actually have decided to use darkness to get out by herself much like AtW did the first time. The problem is that light oriented characters like Aqua are usually not very good at controlling it, so she still might be a boss that we will have to fight at some point of the game.

After that I really believe that Aqua is not afflicted by Xehanort but by the RoD itself. If I recall correctly, in 0.2 Mickey clearly states that getting out is not easy cause the door of darkness will not let light pass through. Aqua might have succumbed to the darkness by her own will just to try to get out by herself. The problem about that is that usually light oriented characters like Aqua are not very good at controlling darkness so she still might be an opponent that can eventually be freed. The thing that also interest me is that Nomura said that it Depends ON THE PLAYER. This might mean that the game will be highly interactive or will require some objectives to be completed in order to do a particular action.
