“Why is having a heart is so hard?”
Lea was sitting on the top of the Clock Tower. He was confused, a weird feeling inside his chest. He didn’t know what was this feeling called, but he knew who had caused it.
Roxas
He remembered those days when he and Roxas sat down on the very spot he sit now, thinking about their days when they still in the Organization, just after finishing an exhaustive mission; either from collecting hearts or did recon. Everything was simple and they could enjoy themselves without any fear for the future.
Lea fished his sea-salt ice cream from his pocket before he bit it slowly, his eyes swept towards the forever unsetting sun of Twilight Town while looking at nothing. Everything was so peaceful. Here, he could forget everything that had happened and pretend, pretending that maybe Roxas was late on his mission because he had a tough Heartless on his hand and fighting it himself took a lot of time and patience.
“Hayner, wait up!”
“Slow down, guys”
Lea shifted his green eyes toward the station entrance. Three young teenagers –Roxas’ fake friends- stood. Two were panting and catching their breath -Pence and Olette- while the other –Hayner- lead in front, his hands on his chest while his shoes tapping the stone floor.
“You two are so slow. We’ll be left by the train at this rate” Hayner unfold his hand.
“But we can always ride the next train”
“Pence is right. Don’t tell me you make another bet with Seifer and his gang again?” Olette asked, her hand on his hip as her voice rise.
Hayner looked aside. “Hmph, they asked for it”
“Hayner!”
TUT TUT
“The train!”
The three teenagers exclaimed at the same time when the high pitch sound resound through out the station. They quickly ran inside. Loud alarm resounds for a few second before the sound of train moving became fainter as it moved farther.
Lea kept silent as he watched everything. An emotion rose on his chest, a different but also confusing, when he saw those three bickered before they ran inside. He finally realized it.
Jealousy
He remembered when Roxas ‘hang out’ with those three in Fake Twilight Town, having great times together and spent their ‘last days of summer vacation’ doing many things. Lea, no, Axel never exists in Roxas life. Roxas ‘friends’ had replaced them and Roxas had forgotten everything.
About them
About him and Xi-
Lea held his head, his ice cream stick drop from his mouth to his lap as an image of a black hair girl came into his mind. They were sitting together on the Clock Tower, eating sea-salt ice cream and playfully pushed each other.
Who is she?
She was familiar and he felt sadness just thinking about her.
So, Axel… can I be your friends?
Her image was very unclear, her name wouldn’t came off even though it’s on the tip of his tongue.
Lea’s hand ruffled his red spiky hair, frustrated. He still coping with his new heart and learn to control his emotion. This is harder than being a Nobody!
“There you are!”
Lea snapped from his internal conflict and faced his visitor.
“Sora…”
The Keyblade Wielder was clutching his knees, his cheeks were pink as he drew short breaths like he had been chased by group of Heartless. “We have been looking for you everywhere!” Sora hastily walked toward Lea.
“We?” Lea eyebrows rose, unsure.
“Yeah. Riku, Kairi, even the king was worried! You weren’t in your room when Goofy check you up.”
“I’m taking my break” Lea muttered, avoiding to look at Sora and tried to focus at anything other than Roxas’ Somebody. “Just leave me alone” he whispered.
There was no response.
“It’s about Roxas, isn’t it?” Sora pushed his feet down past the tower ledge and sat next to Lea a little bit away. Sora glanced at Lea before he continued, “You miss him”
Lea keeps silent
“I know everything… at least from what Roxas’ memories had shown me in my sleep” Sora speaks slowly. His fingerless glove traced the empty space next to him where Roxas usually sit. Remembering his Nobody memories -his pain, his struggle, the unfairness that everything he believes are actually lies and what he loves are cruelly taken away- always made his heart ache. “I’m sorry”
Lea glanced at Sora, his fingers clenched tightly on the ledge and his head bow down. “It’s not your fault” Lea slung his left feet down. “He had to wake you up after all”
“But Axel-
“What past is past, Sora” Lea cut Sora, instantly silencing him “What I did back then was very selfish. I kidnapped Kairi, putting you and your friends in danger and for what? To turn you into a Heartless and hope that Roxas would be reborn.” Lea felt it that emotion came to his chest. He clutched his chest tightly.
Sora’s blue eyes widen as he heard Lea.
“But if I think about it now, it’s kinda silly” Lea grin a little, thinking what would Roxas say if he heard him now. Even if that happened, there’s no guarantee that the new Nobody would be Roxas.
I’ll always be there to bring you back.
“My ‘friendship’ with Saix was based on our memories before we were attacked. But Roxas… being with him had changed me. I could feel emotions, even when others said that I only pretending. They are real! I felt a deep sadness and disappointment when he left that day, when he said that no one would miss him… But I do, even now…” Lea whispered when he finished. He finally confessed everything to Sora.
Sora listened Lea as the older man kept talking. Now he knew why, that day when he saved him from countless Nobodies and said that Roxas made him feel like he had a heart. But still…
“For an enigma, you sure are very predictable” Sora stated.
“…What?”
“Your bond with Roxas is the most precious thing for you, right? So you will do anything for it. I couldn’t blame you, Axel, for doing those actions in the past. Those who were using you are ones to blame. I knew that feeling and if I were in your position, I would do the same.”
“Are you pitying me?” Lea’s green eyes narrowed.
“No” Sora shake his head slowly. “It was the opposite, actually.” Sora stood up. He gripped his hand and look toward the twilight sky. “Axel… I promise I’ll find a way and save Roxas because he deserves a second chance, along with the others.”
“Sora…”
“Besides you said that ‘you will catch up soon in no time flat’,” Sora formed a small smile. He couldn’t do much for Lea, “so you better train and become stronger so I don’t need to hold back when I defeat you in training again.”
Lea grinned back. He also stood up and faced Sora. “It was you who lost, actually. And I told you my name is Lea. Got it memorized?” Lea tapped his forehead softly.
Sora smiled. He was happy because Lea had turned into his normal self.
“Sora! Lea!”
Both boys looked toward the bottom of tower when they heard a female voice shouting. Kairi waved her hands, Riku behind her. He too looked at them, a smile in his face.
“Well, we better get down.” Sora said. He walked slowly.
Lea felt lighter, his burden had lessened a bit. His problems are still there, but he didn’t feel bad anymore.
“Best friends forever…”
“You coming?” Sora looked at him when he realized that Lea hadn’t moved at all.
“Yeah…” Lea answered before he walked toward Sora.
He knew it would be a difficult path to walk but he knew it wouldn’t be impossible. Because they are his most precious friends and he will always be there for them.
