They are not used for target clear. There are many different ones like, fly, magma flow, river flow, or rain dance. If you're there, where you can use the area move of a pokemon with you, a question mark will appear above your head. When you click on it, it also says which pokemon you nedd, I think. They also leave you after their are move is completed.

A captured pokemon will only stay with you until you use it field move or area move or release it.
