And now I can't shake the image of Sora dressed all in black, having Riku killed while he's fishing...

KH3D Kingdom Hearts 3D box artwork revealed
Dave replied to JTD95's topic in Kingdom Hearts - General
I think Sora as Michael Corleone is a bit too heavy for the general gaming audience. I love how Mickey is always integrated into these covers, yet he somehow avoids doing the generic Disney-promotional wave and smile, instead opting to look serious and compelling. -
I kind of just want the Heartless back. They were set up to be this incredible threat in the first game, but then kind of got sidelined in importance as the Xehanort plan got revealed. Perhaps a villain that was a more sentient Heartless, but rather than want to take over the worlds like Ansem, it would just want to consume and destroy.

Indeed I am.

Well, the problem with a Kingdom Hearts Movie is that all of the Disney levels are movies already, and with many of the levels already reinacting the films' plots, to make a movie about them again would be redundant. Unless, of course, the KH Movie either scrapped the Disney levels, or altered the plots so that they weren't just doing the original films over again.

The Keyblader Rises (Dark Knight Rises Trailer Parody)
Dave replied to kalnet's topic in Creative Media
That's very well put together! Very nice. -
Monochrome, actually, mostly because I really like both Timeless River and black and white cartoons.
-
Just for fun: in the event that any other Disney characteres besides Mickey found the ability to wield a keyblade, who would you have it be, and why? I'd personally love to see Jack Skellington get one, just to see his reaction as he gets excited about his new stage prop.

Joshua definately isn't Triple H enough
-

Physically, he's almost the mathematical inverse of Triple H. Hunter is the equivalent of a Nordic God, while Joshua is just a little too pretty.

I think the set-up of DiZ as a jerk is something of a trick. The opening of KH2 presents Roxas as your average, everyday protaganist, and DiZ's attempts to screw with him, of course, seem to make him look like a villain. The story wants you to think of this as a classic narrative (good guys vs. bad guys) in order to set up for the bait-and-switch when it turns out Roxas isn't the hero of the game at all. DiZ is more of a tool to make the player feel extra sorry for Roxas and relate to him more in the short time you have with him. This idea of DiZ's "jerk" nature being present solely to put Roxas over is made more clear the next time we see him with King Mickey, in which all of his more negatvie mannerisms are dropped altogether. He's not a jerk anymore because the story doesn't need him to be one. Also, the rest of the game doesn't do him a lot of favors. He's clearly undergone a personal tragedy and loss greater than most of the characters, but we not only don't get to see this events unfold, we also don't get to see DiZ again until the end of the game, and thus don't get to have the same level of understanding and emotional attachment as we did with Roxas. Had more effort gone in to developing his character on screen, I think his motivations and mental standing would have beenput across much better. I think the idea of DiZ being a jerk is more because of our sympathies being with Roxas and his tragedy, rather than Diz actually doing anything wrong.

Pooh's storybook has gotten out of control and is threatening to take over the world, superimposing its own pages onto an actual plane of existence, and wiping out what was already there. However, Pooh and friends are unaware that their very existence is threatening others, and Sora has to confront his innocent friends and decide whether or not he can put an end to the Book of Pooh for the greater good of the world, even if it means destroying one of the best friends he ever had.

One thing that bothered me in Kingdom Hearts II was how Mulan and The Lion King were handled. You have two well written, well thought out movies with solid stories and characters, which had to be chopped to pieces in terms of character and plot development in order to force it into the level constrictions for space and time reasons, and ultimately, both plots felt rushed and without the same kind of poignancy as their movie counterparts. It just felt like a great disservice for two good stories. On the flip side of this, Beast's Castle, Olympus Coliseum, and Halloween/Christmas Town took certain elements from their movies, but made a more or less original story out of them, and it turned out very well. Without relying too much on the original plot, these levels were able to seamlessly tie in interaction with the Organization and Malificient without it seeming awkward, managed to display the character development in a plot that didn't require the player to have necessarily seen the movie in order to understand, and used the two act structure of the game to present a more interesting and fleshed out story as a result. They didn't have to try and smush a one and a half hour movie into about half an hour of gameplay, and the end product feels better and more natural as a result. So, should the worlds in Kingdom Hearts emulate the plots of the movies, or should they just go the route of being more or less original short stories?

KH2 The only one who enjoyed Atlantica?
Dave replied to XIIISwords's topic in Kingdom Hearts - General
I liked the idea of it and thought that it worked where it was in the game: it's just a bunch of mini games in an optional world. If you had to play through it in order to beat the game, it would be a bit more annoying, but it's harmless enough. The only thing that actually really bugged me about is that the new songs and their lyrics really, really aren't that good. They're very Randy Newman, as the Nostalgia Critic would say; their words don't say anything deep or profound, and just seem like regular conversation put to a musical beat. However, I did like taking part in Part of Your World, as it almost fits with the rest of the Kingdom Hearts story, and it's just kind of fun to hear Sora try to sing Under the Sea. So, yes, I enjoyed it for what it was. -
I think Sora's failed a couple times. The one that comes to mind first is in how he more or less turns his back on Donald and Goofy in CoM, trying to pursue something he thought was more important, only to find that what he thought he was doing correctly was almost completely wrong. In the first Kingdom Hearts, you could argue that he more or less fails to remember what he was supposed to be doing (finding Kairi). The thing is that when Sora does encounter some kind of personal failing, he acknowledges it, learns from it, and gets over it. He doesn't brood or dwell on them; that's Riku's schtick. If Sora were to become more serious in nature, than Riku would become redundant, because both he and Sora would have the same personality.

The more exagerated character design, especially the eyes, is actually one of the things I really like about Vexen. Everyone in the Organization is almost too pretty, in some ways, and to have Vexen have the crazy eyes, poor posture, and guant features makes him more unique. That, and the Organization has an overabundance of stoic, calm, and collected memberes, and to have one that's a bit twitchy and eccentric really helps shake things up.

I would actually be very uncomfortable with any kind of heel turn regarding Sora. What makes KH one of my favorite games is that Sora as the protaganist is just, well, nice. So many RPGs and games feel that they must have some kind of anti hero, or heavy angst, or make things edgy in one way or another. And very rarely is it even necessary, in my opinion; it seems to be edgy for the sake of being edgy. Sora is a hero you can root for, because you know that he would bust his tail to try and save you, or anyone else in danger, and do it for the right reasons. His positive energy is what makes him unique in a post modern world that hates anyone who is happy, and to tarnish that would really hurt the entire franchise. So I'm going to hold out hope that any kind of bragging or bravado is just an assertion of ability and expressing confidence.

Boss that made you rage quit?
Dave replied to Seasalt_Ice_Cream_FTW's topic in Kingdom Hearts - General
The only rage quit I've done is with Demyx, and that's only because I had him on the ropes with only a minimal amount of HP left before he pulled the instant-death-in-ten-seconds move, and sure enough, I was just about to kill the last water-enemy before the timer hit zero. Xaldin runs a close second, but that's more because he's just really annoying to fight. -
Something I've been wondering about: in the most recent trailer: you can see Ansem (I know that he should be called Xehanort's Heartless, but I can't help but remember him as Ansem) and Xemnas, each facing Riku and Sora. This raises a couple questions. First, as both of them have been killed in the real world, that means the original Xehanort can come back, and that's all fine and well. But then, why are they here? My initial reaction is that they're illusions, or created out of memories, given that they are presumably encountered within the Dream realm. But if they're not, could it be that their existence is now on the same level of the worlds that have been put to sleep, and if this is the case, would it be possible for them to come back in some fashion? Second, and this still relies on the idea of their not being illusions, if they are appearing in this Dream realm after being beaten by Sora, what does that say about other characters, including Vanitas, who have been defeated, and whether or not they can come back to life ("wake up" as it were)?

KHDays Who is your favorite Organization character?
Dave replied to Kingdom Sora's topic in Kingdom Hearts - General
Vexen. I liked his character design the best, and his voice in Re:CoM was spot on in it's delivery. Also, he seems to have more personality than a lot of the other members. -
I don't think he'll be helping too much in this game, though he may later. I only say this because Sora and Riku are in their own dream dimension, while Lea and everyone else are, presumably, not. I reckon he'll have some backstage influence, but not in the direct way of assisting.

I would prefer Demi Moore return for the same reasons that I prefer getting the original voice actors (when possible) back for all the Disney characters: it's simply how I know the character, and am familiar with them. You instantly associate the image with a certain sound, and when that sound is changed, the whole package seems off. Sean Astin's attemnpt at doing Hercules in KH1 was incredibly jarring, as opposed to having Tate Donavan back in KH2, which made a world of difference in relating with the Hercules character, because, well, he not only looks like the Hercules I remember, but sounds like him too. So yes, I would prefer Demi Moore playing Esmerelda.

KH3D Who, or what, are you most happy to see in kh 3d
Dave replied to a topic in Kingdom Hearts - General
The thing that got me the most excited as news came out has to be the Hunchback of Notre Dame level. It's an underappreciated movie that needs some limelight on it, and the potential for level design practically promises to be epic.
