I'd recommend Rurouni Kenshin (manga). It takes place in the Meiji era in Japan. The main protagonist is Kenshin Himura, once the killer Hitokiri Battosai, now he is a wandering man that helps others. After meeting Kaoru, he stays at a dojo. The story is a mix of romance, comedy and action. It really is good and really sad things happen. This manga can make you cry quite a few times. I'd also recommend Katekyo Hitman Reborn, already explained above.
