  16. Hope you enjoy this!!! Remnants of air Chapter 1: The Departure ”Vha wusmb ir albilf, wa heta lu whasa vu hiba. Vha ase ug Juneth her dafol. Wa esa emm fuilf vu bia.” These were the last words of the ancient priest Jargon of the kingdom of Jur. After several centuries of peace and prosperity, King Dareth’s older brother, Juneth, overthrew him for power. Once the King’s throat was slit, the blood that fell was not only his, but also his subjects and the villagers that didn’t kneel down to Juneth. Many lives were taken, blood was spilt, and the world ended for some when the lives of the five priests were taken. “The priests were the human form of the gods” some would say. The priests could perform majiks and spells. In his youth, Juneth requested that the priests would teach him their ways. When they refused, he had become angry, and even more so, when they taught his brother, and he became king. The jealousy built up over the years and he overthrew his brother. The only thing that happened under the Dark King’s nose was the escaping of the children of the priests who moved to the other half of the world, to the Windy Plains to reproduce and create a new world. Millions of years later, people are all over the continent and peace has prospered. Children run through the village of Utsam, One of the oldest and smallest villages. There are hills that make up the village. On one particular hill, two best friends, Neko and Itami, play around at the ages of eight and seven, respectively. “You’ll never catch me!” yells Neko. The two friends have been playing ‘Hide and be found’ for hours, not going home for breakfast or lunch until Itami nearly passes out. “I’m hungry; can we go back inside for a snack?” she wined. “Sure, but only after you beat me in a duel!” said Neko excitedly. Picking up his wooden sword, he advanced on Itami. She responded with such force that Neko nearly fell over. Then she wacked his sword out of his hand. “Wow, I forgot how good she was.” Mumbled Neko. She stood over him quite triumphantly, standing over one inch taller than him, despite their one-year age difference. Little did they know that their lives would change over the next few years. “Wake up Neko.” Said Itami patiently. “Hrm?” Mumbled Neko still half asleep. “WAKE UP!” She yelled, a little more annoyed. Neko crawled out of his bed and stood up to greet his best friend. She eyed him up and down with the remark “You look terrible.” Nine years had passed. Neko had turned from a blond haired boy to a tall, handsome, sandy haired, blue eyed teen. Itami turned from a short-haired little girl into a slim, blond with bright green eyes. He had feathers in his hair and dry drool on his face. He quickly went to his washroom and cleaned himself up. She sighed and handed him a small template with the ancient language on it. “Study up, we’re leaving today.” She said dreamily, staring out of the window. Every year, the people of Utsam send their teenagers to seek out the ‘Twelve Teachers’ who are practitioners of Majiks and spells, to learn their ways. Not only do they have the best equipment, the only price of attending is finding them. One year ago, Neko’s friend, Jaliun, had left to train. Neko wanted to join him and see how well he is. After a hasty breakfast, the two friends said farewell to their parents and set off down the road. After about an hour, the two found themselves in the Awakened Woods, a sacred forest where people go to pray to the gods. Neko set up camp and Itami took out some fresh cow’s milk and cheese. “I’m going to go find a lake to bathe in.” said Itami through a mouthful of cheese. She stood up, packed away her block of cheddar, and took a large cloth and a slab of soap with her as she walked into a cluster of trees. Neko sat quietly and waited for her to return so he could go next. Half an hour later, she came back smelling fresh and clean. Neko gathered up his stuff and headed to the lake. The water was cool and smooth, like liquid glass. After 15 minutes, he heard a rustling in the bushes. “Itami?” he called. After a few moments, a small raccoon came from out of the bush. Neko sighed with relief and closed his eyes. “Did you really think that you could escape me?” Said a raspy voice. Neko jumped and looked around looking for the source of the voice, but to no avail. He quickly dried off and got dressed to go join Itami. She was drawing in her book of parchments. She smiled and packed her things to get going. They talked about what kind of Majiks they wanted and the Spells that they would master. The road was filled with the scents of flowers and fresh dew each morning, and the chirps of crickets at night. Nothing went wrong until Neko and Itami encountered a roaming spider goblin. He was ugly, just plain ugly. He jumped at Neko with his small dagger and was cut short by Itami’s bronze short sword before Neko had any time to draw his own. She smirked and sheathed her blade after cleaning the fresh, green goblin blood from the bronze metal. She and Neko would spar occasionally after the incident, to make sure that they were never caught off guard again. They arrived at a small town after 10 days of walking. The town had a nice, small comfy inn that they stayed in while they replenished their healing herbs and got their swords sharpened. They were in such a hurry that they didn’t even stay the night before leaving. “Damn!” exclaimed Itami when she looked in her bag. “I forgot to get a new quill.” Neko smirked and handed her his old one, since he barely used it. She smiled at him in thanks and continued rummaging in her rucksack for her book. Neko hummed tunelessly as they walked in the direction that the villagers had pointed them in. As she was about to make note to her mother, an arrow whizzed past her ear, almost piercing it. She silently cursed under her breath and she drew her sword as Neko did the same. Behind the two stood a woman about three years older than Neko, with a sword and a bow. With a terrible sneer on her face, the woman said, “Well, what do we have here?” she mused as she moved in for the attack.
