  1. Too many details and I suppose the game will still be fairly "easy" to people that like that kind of thing, either way. But new abilities are appreciated!

"He said that they really focused on exceeding fans' expectations and wanted to do as much as they could. While other games end up cutting various elements due to cost or time constraints, Yasue feels confident that the team was able to accomplish everything that they wanted to implement."

This hurts. I think even a couple spin offs were more complete than KH3 in various aspects, so to say that compared to other games, KH is truly complete... it's a bit of an insult to me. Unless he's mainly focusing on gameplay elements and such, in which case I do agree that I liked everything in it and there was variety in the things you could do. (Though I still don't know why we were able to breathe under the sea in Caribbean. Did Caribbean get Atlantis' leftovers?)

  2. I was torn between Roxas and Terra, but only because those were the longest ones. In the end, I think Terra had just a bit better entrance (though still pretty lacking), because they showed the fight between Terranort and Terra and how Terra came back. Roxas' was a cool scene with everything that was going on, but there were barely any actual details surrounding it. Just whoosh, there he is.

  3. Many can work with KH easily. Inside Out with all the feelings, Incredibles being awesome (but we did have Big Hero 6 or superheros), Brave with badass Merida and nature (but Tangled is similar nature-wise), but I went with Wall-E, cause SPACE! It'd be an interesting concept we haven't seen before. We had Tron for futuristic stuff, but still!

Initially, I went to America personally two times for negotiations, and without a plot no progress could be made, so without even a main plot yet, I wrote the plot for Toy Box.

It now makes sense that the game seems to have such unconnected stories and pretty basic stuff without any real relevance. If you make a story without really thinking how it helps the main plot... what can you expect? :'D

Q: The base stories of the [Disney/Pixar] worlds, as well as the stories of Sora and his friends were cleverly introduced.
A: Those are the achievements of Oka (Masaru Oka, the scenario and cutscene director) and the level design team. Recently in the KH series, I consulted with the level design team and Oka about locations and flow [of battle and events], and using Oka as a springboard [for discussion] I created the scenarios. In the end, although I had a hand in it as well, the flow of the dialogue and the stories of each world were largely handled by the level design team.

I know he probably means what he says, but it honestly looks like he tries to throw Oka and the level design team under the bus since the biggest complaint from people who had complaints was that the stories were meh and the pacing definitely needed a lot of work :'D It's as if he tries to disguise his disassociation with that part of the project as a compliment for other people :'D

Additionally, we took recent player trends into account when we created the battles [for KH3], so we held back on the difficulty level, but there have been many requests to fight strong enemies, so I'm thinking that the priority would be on releasing a critical mode in the form of free DLC, and making the addition of strong enemies, the sort that would appear in a "Final Mix", paid DLC.

What trend is that which makes you create 3 mods that are all easy? I understand that "games have gotten easier", but 3 modes! They could have at least tried a bit more. It seems a bit cheap to give a critical mode for free and then make people pay for some endgame content. I haven't played any Mix titles, but at least I remember that KH1 had a few hard side bosses, as well as KH2 which were part of the package. Here you only get battlegates and the secret boss is laughably easy if you have gained a few levels (and I'm saying this when I'm terrible at strategy and even I could do it EASILY cause I had leveled up first). Either way, ofc the DLC will include more than that, but I'd think a couple bosses should be released together with Critical.

All in all, a fun interview, though the more I read, the more I get the feeling that Nomura is half-assing everything and gets ideas at the last moment, so it doesn't exactly inspire faith in one's work :'D I see they have a ton of projects now, so hopefully we'll at least get some news soon.

Ah, didn't realize that's what you meant. From what I've seen, it looks like the union leaders and the Dandelions had all been moved to the data world so that they didn't have to be part of the Keyblade War. Ephemer and Skuld came back to grab the player character, and then they must have gone back (or stayed there) to the Graveyard to meet up with the others. It was probably something Ava told them to do, like "the five of you will meet up at this place after everything is done and figure out what to do from there." There are some gaps in the story, so it seems we're left to fill them in ourselves.

Ahh ok, I was sure I had missed or forgot something, since it seems pretty major, haha. I confused the event of Ephemer and Skuld saving our player as an act of the union leaders, so it didn't make sense meeting later for the first time. But yes, now it's clear! Thank you very much for help :D I can't wait for the new world and story updates to come forth and confuse me once again, haha.

I'm not sure if you've had the chance to look at the video footage from KHX (Chi, the browser game) yet, but all of the endgame fighting (the Keyblade War) takes place in what we now know as the Keyblade Graveyard, just without all the abandoned Keyblades sticking out of the ground as they eventually would.

I have seen the difference, but that's the thing. When the new 5 union leaders first met, there were already numerous keyblades sticking out, hence it must have already been the Keyblade Graveyard. How did that happen?

I could be wrong, but I thought them jumping into a different worldline simply meant another data world or the real world? This makes things even more confusing.

Thank you, that's what I thought too!

There's no real guarantee just yet, but it seems like the Keyblade Graveyard is located in the place where Daybreak Town used to be (or it could be a ways away from Daybreak Town: again, not clear just yet). For the most part, Daybreak Town in the real world seems to be gone.

This brings me to the question I made in my parenthesis, how did the new union leaders meet for the first time in the graveyard when the graveyard itself existed AFTER the war? The data world first existed before the war, because they were already taking dandelions there. When they took our player to the data world, it was during the war, so there shouldn't have been a graveyard beforehand. Was there any explanation that I missed/forgot or no info yet?

But yes, that makes sense. Seeing the glitches happen both inside the tower and outside was an obvious sign that no one was in the real world. I had just understood some scenes wrong and came to the conclusion they must have been outside to be able to maintain the data world.

While parallel worlds could in fact be a thing, we still don't know enough about them just yet. That information will probably come into play as the game progresses, though. You're correct in saying that all of this is happening in a data world. Whether Brain creates a 2nd data world is up in the air, but we seem to be able to ID him as the "virus" that Luxu referred to in the KH3 Secret Reports (he even called himself a virus).

Phew~ It's confusing to always be sure of whatever happens. At first they only mentioned worldlines so I had assumed they had changed a worldline, but when they started specifically talking about data, I changed my opinion. So, seeing some comments like that shake my beliefs since they tend to change easily with every new piece of information, haha. I'm glad I was still on the right track.

    Thank you both for answering!

  8. This is the new update in the game. Now my question revolves around how many "worlds/worldlines" exist. From what I had understood, there was the real world, where the Keyblade War happened and to avoid having everyone killed, there was a Data World made where we currently are. Now my problem is which world is real and which is not. The new 5 leaders can come in and leave the Data World (just how they got us) and thus, they could alternate between the real world that the war had taken place and the data world. I further assumed that their headquarters (the tower) were in the real world still, because they met in the real world's graveyard initially (actually, I don't remember, how did they meet there for the first time when the graveyard was created once the war was done?) and for various other reasons, but I now think that everyone is inside all the time, right?

However, I read this comment on "Omen's" video: "Parallel universes are a thing. That's what the characters are talking about when they mention world lines. The Dandelions avoided the keyblade war by jumping to a different world line where the keyblade war never happened." This isn't true, right? There's no different world line, people just relive their lives in a Data World without the keyblade war, right? And in this Data World, there's a different darkness involved, which will cause eventually Brain to create a 2nd Data World, but the real world is still the same one, ravaged by the war and the one they will eventually bring the light back to, right?

And for a 5th time... Right? Thank you in advance!

People might assume that Verum Rex is the same title as a game Nomura was planning in the past (Versus XIII), but he says it isn't.

That must be the most hilarious thing I've heard :^) "Oh nooo, it's just a coincidence that almost every character looks similar to FFvs13's".

As for the rest, I'm not THAT excited cause it's either information we pretty much knew or he says "you'll get to know later". Duh, Nomura, we know we'll find out things later, we just wanted something more specific than that. Nonetheless, a couple of things were a bit nice.

  10. I loved San Fransokyo and how big it was and it felt like discovering something new all the time even though it was just one city, so I voted for it. But I do agree that the PotC was also pretty cool. I was amazed at how big the map was and the idea with the islands was really smart, but I suppose the emptiness (apart from emblems and chests) of it, just brought down the whole experience.

  11. I decided to vote without any bias (since my favorite characters are Roxas and Axel) and I went with Riku. Although Sora is the catalyst for basically EVERYTHING, I think Riku is the best because he hit rock bottom and managed to get back up, something not many people do. He tries to forgive himself for various games and never gives himself enough credit, always just giving it to Sora, because of his past actions. Of course, not everything is forgotten, but his never-ending and conscious efforts at being the best he can be make him the best <3

  12. I agree with this! But also, maybe it's because I haven't checked out many places and I don't really use Twitter much, but I've honestly seen mostly overly positive opinions over the game and people complaining about people "hating", than actual hate.

I wholy agree with the silly argument of "hype was too much/expectations were too high/etc", because that is no argument at all and it's just an easy way to dismiss everything without bothering to listen. Cause the opposite argument can be said back "You are too invested to see its problems/etc". People having problems with the game doesn't automatically mean it was their problem and the game was perfect (nor does it mean the opposite of course), it just means they have possibly come across legit problems that didn't sit well with them. I had fun with KH3, but since my top priorities are always story and characters and don't care as much for the gameplay, I don't think I can even give it a 7. Maybe 6.5. It might seem low, even to my eyes, but putting aside my nostalgia goggles and my general love for the franchise, I found so many problems with the construction of the story and its storytelling (even for KH standards) to say that it is a truly good game. I suppose if I judged every category more equally, it would have a higher score, but it's a personal score either way.

That being said, both sides should be open or at least accepting to other people's opinions. I know I won't agree with anyone who says KH3 is a masterpiece, but I can understand and accept that what they saw was satisfactory to them and more power to them for enjoying everything so much. Unfortunately, there are always extreme people in everything, like adoring ot hating something blindly, but those people can be ignored. If only the world had only reasonable people :^)

  13. Mine is silly, because my first contact with KH was the manga. I stumbled on the manga and it was love at first sight. I was enamored by the concept and I HAD to learn everything about the series, which led me to the games and thus, I started my journey of buying them. I bought a ps2 just to play KH, which I couldn't find in my town, so a friend from a nearby and bigger city got me both 1 and 2. I remember beating the games in a few days each. There was honestly no turning back since then. The games made my love stronger and since then I bought every console any spin-off released in the subsequent years and each game made me more involved and in love (except maybe Re:Coded).

So, it wasn't really a specific moment for me, the idea of KH was enough and it never truly let me down and even though KH3 was a big disappointment for me due to execution, I am still going to be a fan forever. It just is what it is~

What boggles my mind is that fans are going around calling this the best KH ever. No this game suffers from way too many writing flaws even for KH's standards.

Exactly this. KH rarely had true good writing, but it had lots of charm and my favorite games are actually a couple of the side games, but the next big installment managed to botch everything story-wise, even that charm. No tension, no proper pacing, no gratifying for everything we've been through, nothing.

    Spoiler

It still astounds me that Aqua even had her own prologue venturing in the Land of Darkness and in KH3, she said 3 lines before we just kicked her butt and saved her.

KH is one of the few franchises that has managed to create such a complex universe (albeit convoluted) and even pulled off the suffering of some characters successfully, only to basically skip over them in the end. How did this happen? So many years and we got basically a condensed version of what KH3 should have been.

Unfortunately, it's nowhere close to a masterpiece for me and I don't think any dlc is going to change that. I can definitely see them release extra bosses, Scala exploration and maybe side stories for some organisation members or for Terra/Aqua/Ven

    Spoiler

or even Xehanort now that he seems such a good guy,

but nothing can save the way this was handled. At least the central story needed a lot more attention. I wonder when we will get more info for future dlc/games~

  15. I finished the game yesterday and I wanted to share my opinion to find more like-minded people. I've read some raving reviews and some unsavory reactions. I mostly tend to agree with the criticism with the difference that I still enjoyed the game thoroughly so it wasn't a bad experience, just a disappointment.

    Spoiler

First of all, I generally play games mainly for the story so I am not so interested in everything else so my main gripe is the storytelling and that's where I'll focus.

World stories: Lacking. Unlike the first 2 games in which Sora had specific reasons into going each world (KH1 to lock the doors, KH2 to open new paths among them), this time he only had directive: to get back his power of waking. It started well having to go specifically to Olympus and ask Herc's help, but after that, it is just kind of one random world to another and half the time they don't even mention the power of waking except that he still doesn't have it. Not only that, but the stories themselves feel very cut off from us, because we barely do anything. In Tangled, we literally just keep walking until we reach the city and then we are transported back to the tower to fight the boss, while the players get glimpses of the story. In Arendelle, we literally keep getting kicked out by Larxene and spend the entire time trying to reach Elsa. In PotC, we have nothing to do with the story at all until we are meant to go to the end for the boss fight. I mean, I don't expect 10 hours in each world, but I barely felt needed by or connected to anyone. We just happened to stumble on the organisation as well and had some very cliche conversations that I felt we had already pretty much seen before. There were of course some nice bits, but overall, little engagement with the story itself. Special mention to Winnie the Pooh that had the shortest story of them all...

Maps: To put it simply, they were great. I loved how big they are, you could walk for a long time and still not see everything, BUT they still were really empty. The only fun you could have with the maps was to take photos of emblems and find chests and isn't that a shame for those great, big maps? Biggest revelation for me was Port Royale, which had a 2 part city, the Fort and the underwater exploring and what could you do there? Except emblems, chest and the usual heartless, pretty much nothing. Maybe just spin on a barrel for the nth time or overhear the same lines the city people said. It honestly feels such a waste, because I had no inclination to stand around doing nothing. In Tangled, there's this vast expanse of greenery, which was only used to splash Rapunzel in the lake or lead birds to her. Again, little engagement with the surroundings.

Central story: Really lacking and sometimes severely rushed. Throughout the initial 8 worlds, the main story was almost non-existent, other than knowing that Mickey and Riku had their own mission and Sora exchanging pleasantries with every organisation member. Occasionally, we had some scene with the Org. members talking to each other or Sora with his gummiphone, but all in all, almost nothing really moved the story along and many conversations were just stale. Then, towards the end, the more serious events happen and everything somehow from really slow feels REALLY fast. The "twist" with Aqua's turn to darkness was a very fitting one, but it honestly took 1 measly fight to bring her back? She spent 10 years down there, she suffered for so long to the point she allowed herself to sink further and we just had to beat her ass once to save her? Where's the drama? Where's the long sought salvation? I was disappointed with this sudden turn of events, but ok, we had Aqua, hooray.

Then we saved Ventus, which was closer to what I expected it would be, because unlike Aqua's rescue, there was not much more to do with Ventus. The scene in Sora's heart was touching. After that, the story rushes to the Keyblade Graveyard and once we get attacked, Sora does the unthinkable for me and starts repeating how everyone was gone forever and everything is doomed. Say what now? Almost 2 decades of games, where Sora never gave up and continused to believe in the impossible, just to conveniently have him cry after his friends were taken by the darkness for the 100th time in the history of the franchise? Again, where's the drama? How am I supposed to relate to the story when the story really tries very sloppily to make me feel the loss? It was just too fast and sudden.

Then, moving along, the clash starts happening and almost every loser starts repenting about their deeds. I really liked how the battles were set and I didn't mind the random in battle scenes, but having almost everyone turn out as a good guy was a bit over the top. Terra's return also lacked a good climax, because once again, it's been 10 years of torture and never-ending effort at trying to take back his body. At least, they put some effort there, but it was just really fast. Same really with Xion's return, because it happened so fast. At least there was some groundwork for Roxas.

Then final battle arrives. Scala is beautiful place that you can't explore at all, except while fighting. I appreciated the sunken Daybreak Town's sunken tower (which I didn't even notice when playing, only after I was done with it), but once we win, Xehanort starts crying about he did it for the world, to create a pure, bright world, because the darkness was spreading like a plague. Wasn't his initial plan to have a balanced world because he believed the light was too strong compared to the darkness currently? Now it sounded like he wanted to help the people and Eraqus just patted him on the back, even though it was Xehanort that killed him, and Xehanort just gave up after 1 minute of talking. LIKE WHAT? Did I go through 24254 games and 2342543 of his plans, to have him show his good intentions, smile and give up in a matter of seconds, while everyone seems to actually forgive him? Are we really gonna go with the misunderstood path? He didn't have to be a serial killer, but at least he should have gone out with a bang and not another lackluster bad-guy-turning-good silliness. If you want to go that way, then we needed to have seen more of his scenes to see his internal turmoil and his dubious actions, not just stating at the end like it's fact.

Either way, the central story was very rushed in every aspect and with the epilogue/secret ending, it seemed as though Nomura was planning to have this game as a prologue for his next installment. He tried more to showcase new questions, than give any good answers to this one, which is the most disappointing of all. It honestly makes me frustrated that this is all we got when everything was building up for years just to get the "Hmm? Yeah, Xehanort saga is done, but look at my shiny new toy! It's the Lost Masters :D" kind of message. However, I wholly loved that Xigbar was Luxu. I did not see that coming at all.

Gameplay: Good! I can't get into much details on that one, but I liked the gameplay as it was, because it wasn't too hard and the keyblade form changes were fun, though I'm kinda sad we got glide so late in the game. I'm sorry to say though that after the first few times, I got bored with the attractions. They really had no place there and it was boring seeing the same thing all the time so out of place. Other thing that I didn't much like was the ship fighting. God knows how many times it took me to beat Luxord's fleet, because I could hardly move the way I wanted to and I had to level up my ship before trying again. That is probably just me, but damn, the ships were REALLY not for me. I also appreciated the gummi ship maps. I haven't challenged the more difficult adversaries yet (not sure if I will ever do so haha), but I really liked the way they were made to explore things so a plus for that. Furthermore, I played this on Proud and let me tell you, I never play things on the most difficult level, because I'm generally a scaredy cat and as a not great player, I don't like to keep losing. Needless to say that Proud was REALLY easy. They didn't think this through all that well. Last but not least, I liked the element of unknown in the final battle, because you had to do some things but you didn't know how long you had to last or if you had to do something first, etc. Also, a very weird experience to have Donald and Goofy speak to me through the controller haha.

Characters: This ties in with the central story really, because if the main story is rushed, it makes sense that the characters act rushed in some cases. As I mentioned, Sora's total out of character outburst, which came out of nowhere even though he has been through worse things and still had hope. Nevertheless, other than that, Sora is the usual him with no development more or less; he still is happy and acts recklessly when it comes to saving someone and ultimately, that's why we keep playing (although I do believe that Riku would make a more interesting protagonist). My main problem is, of course, Kairi. I ranted about her in another thread, but just to include her here as well, I am very disappointed that Nomura thought that once again her role was to be non-existent until the end, in which she first did absolutely nothing and Lea took the blow for her and then later, she got kidnapped. Thankfully, she did one useful thing of being a tether to Sora's consciousness as to not fade, but that's all she really does; stand there, serve as motivation for Sora. Thankfully, we have great girls like Aqua and even Namine who barely made an appearance, but yeah...

Special mention to the little star in the Final World that might be Strelitzia. I assumed at first that the star would have been X, since it mentioned how there was someone out there for her, but then realized through a friend that it's more possible that it's Strelitzia and X is someone else (probably Skuld).

Visuals: Stunning (in most cases). I couldn't get enough of the textures everywhere; the maps, the clothes, the facial features, the objects, etc. Truly good work and it really showed when they had some scenes from previous games and they lacked such textures. I think the only awkward world to the eye was PotC. I don't know what happened, because I liked what I had seen in the trailers, but when playing, it really didn't work. Their faces seemed so weird and Elizabeth's hair was very awkward. It's the only world that sound and appearance just didn't really match. Other than that, I really loved everything.

Overall: Really enjoyable most of the time, albeit very disapointing in the most important aspects. It's too bad that I'm not that invested to the secondary games it had. I still loved how bbs had monopoly as an extra game, why couldn't KH3 have such a game too other than repetitive ones? Nevertheless, the game feels like a prologue to another game and it's not as complete as it should have been. I'm a fan for 11 years now and kinda wanted a more wholesome experience for the end of the saga, when I have felt that for other side games.

Either way, those were my (extensive) thoughts about it.

  16. I am kind of lost of what is happening in KHUX based on the secret reports of KH3. I will include spoilers that tie in both KH3 and KHUX.

    Spoiler

From Luxu's reports and from what we have played, we know that the Foretellers got the new 5 union leaders, which in turn were sent to the data world through the book of prophecies. According to the newest JP story, Brain is the virus the reports speak of and is the one who will send the 5 new union leaders to another data world, using Maleficent's knowledge to avoid the new darkness that appeared in the data world. So, my main question is, since this is all data, aren't they meant to return to the real world, which is ravaged by the keyblade war, to bring back the light? Is there any point to go from Data World 1 to Data World 2? In the end, it is said that their light saved the world, so they must have returned, so what is the point of changing data world lines? I mean, at most you could use the book of prophecies to traverse time somehow (and obviously some people did), but it doesn't really change the true timeline, it just creates copies in which the story can't be changed.

Then Luxu says he gave his keyblade away to one of those 5 union leaders and after they left, he promised he would see them again. Where did they even go? Theeen, he speaks of Xehanort and how after he falls, the lost masters will return. So, it was planned to meet both the team of new and old union leaders? He summoned the Foretellers (except Ava who is lost somewhere), but he has still to meet the new 5 union leaders again, right?

Also, Lauriam talked to Elrena in the Data World, who in turn searched Strelitzia in that house (which was still the Data World) but Strelitzia was struck in the real world, so somehow that information kinda transferred to the copy?

Either way, my train of thought of is kind of a mess with how things are presented, I'm just lost on how things were supposed to be. Data World 1 was made to save as many wielders were possible as to bring them back, so why is a Data World 2 necessary? Where had the lost Masters been after the war? Did we get any hint? Luxu just summoned them like they didn't just time travel millenia. And Luxu is meant to meet those 5 leaders again? Does that mean all of them exist still?

  17. Ah yes, Kairi~

    Spoiler

What can one say about Kairi? I really, REALLY expected her to be useful in this game and not just serve as motivation for Sora, but Xehanort pretty much explained her worth as such only... I mean ok, I didn't expect her to do something super special awesome since for the most part she was away with Lea, but we are in the graveyard and once again she is about to be attacked and she literally does nothing and someone else had to protect her by taking the blow. Like? Is that the superb training she had? She seemed to use her keyblade once when they were fighting the organisation later, but then what happens? SHE GETS KIDNAPPED. AGAIN. Does Nomura hate Kairi? Is she meant to really do nothing else other than give fuzzy feelings to Sora? The only truly useful thing she did was that Sora didn't disappear and yes, that is a big deal, but damn, is that really it? Namine had like a minute of screentime and she was just as helpful bringing Lingering Will. I wonder if she will ever stop just being a plot element for Sora and maybe actually DO something... It's funny that Kairi only has true value in KHUX~
