RUMOR: Kingdom Hearts CG-animated series allegedly in the works at Disney+

Multiple individual journalists have been claiming to have inside information about a Kingdom Hearts animated series being in the works for Disney+, Disney's subscription video on-demand streaming service.

While a Kingdom Hearts TV show has been rumored to be in production multiple times in the past, with one even being canceled in the series's early years, this is the first time multiple reporters from a handful of popular Disney news sites are claiming this to be true at the same time.

Jeremy Conrad, founder and editor-in-chief at MCU Cosmic, DCEU Mythic, and Star War Unity, with previous work history with IGN and in supporting roles in video games production, hinted at this earlier today with a cryptic tweet. Daniel Richtman, known as a Disney news insider, had also made a strange Kingdom Hearts tweet earlier, which he retweeted for emphasis.

Emre Kaya, a film and TV reporter at The Cinema Spot and former writer for Geeks WorldWide (GWW), followed with a short Twitter thread, claiming that they have inside information about the matter.

I was originally going to publish this as an exclusive article, but apparently a few other insiders have heard about it too so I'm just going to tweet it out I think.

There is a #KingdomHearts series in the works at Disney+.

Disney originally wanted to make it but that didn't work out, so Square Enix was asked to create a pilot using Unreal Engine.

This series is most likely not live-action, but CG animated. They're currently casting.

Skyler Shuler, editor-in-chief at The DisInsider, then reported that Jeremy's post was "true".

Been tagged in Jeremys post (which is true), so here’s what I know:

-Kingdom Hearts will be a Disney+ series, not a movie.

-It’s animated (CG)

-Disney VO actors are expected to reprise their roles (Jim Cummings, Bill Farmer, Tony Anselmo)

All I know.

I will say @Vullein [Emre Kaya] says Square Enix has been tapped to work on the project, which I didn’t know, so kudos to him on that part, he is the series scoopster!

Getting asked why I didn’t report on this, I knew a ton of my fellow insiders were on this too. @Vullein, @DanielRPK [Daniel Richtman], @PolitoThomas [film and TV reporter at The Cinema Spot, previous at GWW], @ManaByte [Jeremy Conrad]

Also, I don’t know how Final Fantasy characters would play into this or even a story at this point.

Shuler also tweeted that the alleged new Kingdom Hearts series would not be live action.

We will be keeping an eye on this rumour and provide relevant updates as it develops.

What do you guys think – is there any truth to this rumor? Do you think we will be seeing a Kingdom Hearts (CG) animated series at last? Let us know in the comments!

Man it would suck if they don't hire the original Kingdom hearts Voice Actors like Haley Joel Osment, David Gallagher, Hayden Panettiere, and Quinton Flynn. Will at least they'rs doing an animated series. Plus, I'm glad they're using Unreal Engine to animated series.

It's still unconfirmed, but somewhat more reliable sources than the original one have started reporting on it. I wouldn't really call it real just yet, just more likely.

I'm cautiously optimistic now that we're getting reports from less questionable sources, hopefully we get official word sometime soon so we can put these rumors to rest, for better or worse though. xD

The prospect of an animated KH series is intriguing as long as they can pull it off well. :D

I'm kind of iffy about this just as much as I am about hearing the rumors about there being a movie trilogy/tv series of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic in the works. (Of course, this could of just end up being the High Republic show Disney is producing.) With both, a lot of factors about it could be done right or could be done dreadfully wrong.

Strange, to say the least. I guess it does make sense to capitalize on the series' renewed popularity, but this seems very out of left field.

I still don't believe this one. Until I get an official announcement from Disney and/or Square Enix, it just doesn't seem plausible to me. It would be cool, though.

Thanks for informing us about this, Aquaberry!

I've been keeping a very close eye on the recent developments regarding these rumors, and the fact that they are now starting to come from more believable sources gives me hope that this indeed will become a reality! A Kingdom Hearts series would be fantastic, and developed by Square Enix with Unreal Engine 4, no less! I hope that Tetsuya Nomura supervises the development of this series, and it would be awesome if Seth Kearsely was brought onboard, since he had wanted to tap into a project like this a few times now!

I just hope this series stays truthful and faithful to what makes the games so great!

I think this will be fantastic seeing Square-Enix retell the series so far as a CGI series done with the current UE4 in-game graphics engine! I ASSUME that's what this show will probably be, as I doubt it's gonna be another side-story thing. That'd just confuse people using D+ who don't play the games.

As for the main non-Disney character cast, I'm sure they'll try and get as many voice actors for the games back for this, especially Osment. HOWEVER, if they really HAVE to swap him out for someone else (though I'm sure they'll at least ASK him; Square does NOT wanna have to deal with the controversy Scoob is under for not at least offering the current VAs to be involved), might I suggest Yuri Lowenthall? He'd vocally fit Sora well; just look how he well he did for Spider-Man and Ben Tennyson!
