Nomura talks Kingdom Hearts III, new outfits for Sora & Riku, link with KHχ, KH3D being considered & more

Sora96

The latest issue of Famitsu Weekly, releasing on Thursday, September 25, 2014, is to include an article about Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX, containing an interview with the director of the Kingdom Hearts series, Tetsuya Nomura.

A summary of this interview has appeared online, and it covers Kingdom Hearts III, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX and Kingdom Hearts χ[chi]. Some of the major points from this interview include that Kingdom Hearts III's development is on schedule, new outfits for Sora and Riku have been designed, that Kingdom Hearts III will link closely with Kingdom Hearts χ[chi], among many other things.

Thanks to hokanko-alt for the original interview summary, and to translator goldpanner for translating everything into English, you can read it below.

This is a pre-release special feature including a review of all currently known info, play impressions, and an interview with director Tetsuya Nomura.

KH2.5 parts aside:

  • when asked if reports that KH3 co-director Yasue spoke about Frozen overseas were incorrect, apparently not giving a clear yes or no meant that overseas some took it as fact
  • choosing what to say you want to do as a new world for KH3 or at some other point in the future is difficult, they are highly passionate
  • the conversation between the mystery pair is even longer, over 2 minutes
  • Between KH2.5 and KH3 they want to leave the least possible time for fans who understand the developments of KHχ to get separated
  • The scenarios of KHχ and KH3 are closely related, and are currently being written simultaneously
  • They don't want to leave KH3D out all by itself, so they are considering key things
  • KH3 is moving along steadily and according to plan
  • They are having issues creating the images because of the engine, but they are writing the scenario and selecting worlds
  • Sora and Riku etc's new clothes have been drawn up
  • The Osaka team said Sora's mobility was too high and he felt invincible (in his final stages of growth)
  • Keyblade transformation/shape variations are turning out amazing
  • They have various other projects outside of KH3, but thanks to all the offers coming currently they are going to respond to it first
  • They plan to publish Nomura comments in the next issue too

Update: Kotaku have also published a summary of the article, you can read it below.

Square Enix recently revealed that Tetsuya Nomura is no longer helming Final Fantasy XV. Now he can work on getting Kingdom Hearts III out quickly.

"We're regularly meeting schedule deadlines." Nomura said in an interview with Weekly Famitsu. "Unfortunately, due to the engine, there are areas on the visual side where we're struggling."

Talking about the Kingdom Hearts III intro teaser that is included with Kingdom Hearts II.5 HD ReMIX, Nomura said, "When we showed the gameplay demo, we received the fan feedback and I felt a lot of anticipation was directed at Kingdom Hearts III. At present we can't really show more, but I wanted to send out some sort of message [to the fans]." Nomura also added, "I also wanted to show people that [Kingdom Hearts III] is going to start from a place they won't expect."

Nomura couldn't specify exactly how far along development Kingdom Hearts III is, but he did note: "I'm currently writing the scenario and selecting worlds. I'm also designing new outfits for Sora and Riku." That kind of gives you a general idea.

In regards to the change in directors for Final Fantasy XV, Nomura stated, "It was a company decision. That's all I can say about it right now."

That OP Sora though.

That makes me wonder what freaking new powers they gave him

The conversation between Eraqus and Xehanort is over 2 minutes long?

Keyblade Transformations looking nice?

New outfits drawn for Sora and Riku?!

Worlds being selected and scenario being written?

...

...

...

...

This is the best news I have heard all year, AND THIS IS JUST A SUMMARY!!!

Well color me impressed, KH3 development is going by smoothly and accourding to plan as well, that's probably the best thing out of this little summary.  Sure all the other stuff is great as well but still nice to know that.

Yeah, I think most of us can agree that those two figures in the E3 2014 teaser were in fact Young Xehanort and Young Eraqus.

Peace!

Gotta admit, it'll be kinda difficult getting used to Sora and Riku's new outfits since their KH2 costumes have been with us for about a decade...

And yet somehow I still feel like we don't get to see them enough. I mean, I'm sure I'll love the new costumes and everything, it's just, I really want the KH2 Sora to be the new KH1 Sora. They seem to use Sora's first appearance a lot, which I understand, it's the most iconic. But by this point it's gotten a bit old and if they are going to continue using a younger stage Sora in future spinoffs, then I'd at least like to see them use the KH2 Sora going onward, because again, I don't feel that we've been exposed to that enough. By KH2 Sora, I refer to the costume and such, I'm perfectly aware that this is technically still the same older Sora no matter what costume he wears. I just love that black outfit so much.

Nope. No plans of that.

They could do something with it though to get the story across the sea. Kind of like that content they were mentioning in the Re:Coded theater mode. I doubt it will be a full on summary of what happened, considering that X is still going on right now (...in the past.......ugh, time travel grammar...). At the very least, I'd at least like some kind of novel or something of some sort so that I can feel like I was at least given the story so I won't be confused as heck by the time KHIII starts talking about X-related stuff.

some days ago i say i didn't care too much about KH 3, until i finished KH 2.5..... i was wrong, all this news..... i want a taste of the game, let me see that new outfits, i must see them :O

Wait, WUUUUUUUUUUT? You mean you've gotten 2.5 already!? :O

Yes.

Well that's a really weird way to do an event.

Eraqus and Xehanort? :O

Yeah, that was them. Couldn't you tell? Lol, kidding, it is a little tricky to tell at first, but if you look at them closely enough you'll recognize their hairstyles and somebody even made some funny fan art about it which shows where they were positioned. Basically Young Xehanort is the one on the left and Young Eraqus is the one on the right. I was a little confused when I first saw it myself. :)

.....Oh really now? Isnt that how you should feel by the end of a KH game, max level and everything? xD Then again, there should still be some challenge so Im guessing they will try to fix it to where he is still incredibley powerful but not invincible yaknow. Still cant wait.

I have to admit though, some of the statements are a little hard to understand. Like:

  • [*]Between KH2.5 and KH3 they want to leave the least possible time for fans who understand the developments of KHχ to get separated

"Separated"? What's that supposed to mean?

To be fair, they said that they don't currently have any plans about bringing Kingdom Hearts χ[chi] to the states (Ha! Managed to copy and paste "χ"! Now if only I could find a way to just type it...), but that doesn't mean that they won't plan on anything related to χ in the future. I'm kind of hoping for that possibility of it being remade into a PS4 online game based on the new cloud technology that Shinra is working on. It's no guarantee and Square hasn't suggested that yet, but in time we'll see what they do with χ.

Seriously, somebody tell me how to type "χ", I'm just copying and pasting it by this point.

Okay, I've heard two translations of this KH3D thing now. One outright stating that there's 'no plans' and one that says they are considering key things. The scan clearly shows some sort of up-rezzed Axel from DDD, (It looks like it to me, anyway) so what the firetruck?

Not to mention, Square has been know to lie their skinny little Japanese asses off until the bitter end. They did it with 2.5.

Sora and Riku get new outfits in every mainline game, so no surprise there, but it's still nice to hear. Hope Kairi and Lea get additional duds and that we see them in the first trailer.

Hope they fix the engine issues soon, would hate for those to impact the game's development.

Also Frozen is pretty much confirmed to be in the game given how much they've namedropped it. Nomura could've just left well enough alone regarding that but felt the specific need to comment on it. :P

I'm glad that everything is going smoothly and KH3 is on track, but.... they are still selecting worlds? Weren't they doing that back in E3 2013? I was under the impression that the world selection process was pretty quick. I thought Nomura made his list, Disney made their list, they met up to make decisions and hammer it out in one or two meetings. It really takes over a year? Maybe it is taking so long this time because they are bringing in things outside of Disney (Pixar, Marvel, etc.) so they need more meetings? If that's the case, maybe adding those properties really isn't worth it.On the other hand, since they're new to the PS4, maybe they can only work on a world or two at a time, so they can take their time during the selection process? Idk, in Nomura we trust!

To clarify about the "Seperation" part, it means there won't be any other KH games being released in 2015. so, we'll have to be patient until then for KH3, and enjoy Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX until then.

Actually, it's more difficult given the fact, we've been stuck with the KH1 appearance for most titles and his KH2 appearance has only been in cutscenes. In all honesty, 3D would have been better off letting us use the KH2 appearances and there better be an option to use the KH2 appearance in 3 (for later use). I mean, if the turn out for 3's appearance isn't good for me, I'm not willing to move on from it, but I'll deal with it. I just need a little more love for the KH2 appearance.

Well key decisions like that were hard to do without Nomura there a lot of the time. Now that XV isn't his responsibility anymore, he can get right back into the front lines with the rest of the crew...or whatever he normally does as the director. Point is, he can do more stuff than he has been able to for the last 5 years or so.

I don't think that's what it means. "Separation" is too vague, and if they wanted to say that there weren't going to be anymore games in 2015, then they would have said it that way. I wish the full translation was here already. All this guessing is driving me mad!

Ok, so here at KH13, Nomura said that they are considering key things with what to do with 3D, but over at KH Insider, apparently Nomura said that there are no plans to have 3D make the HD transition. So one side says "bananas" while the other side say "purple". Doesn't make sense? That's how much the wait for the full official translation has been tearing my brain apart. xP

I agree with this so much. It is really quite a shame how underappreciated Sora and Riku's KH2 outfits seem to be among the staff. For some reason the dev. team really likes Young Sora and Young Riku. Not saying I don't, I just feel like they used their younger appearances one too many times.

That being said, I am beyond stoked to see what the new duds will be for Sora and the other heroes in Kingdom Hearts III. I hope Lea gets a new outfit, particularly. Not that the black coat isn't cool, it just feels like it'd suit him better if he had the garb of a Keyblade wielder.
