Speculation on Dream Drop Distance

DChiuch

Last year at E3 2010, Square Enix shocked Kingdom Hearts fans by announcing a new game for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS console-- known at the time as "Kingdom Hearts 3D". Later, at Square Enix's 1st Production Department Premiere event, it was announced that the full title of the game is "Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance", revealed along with the first trailer for the game.

So, what do we know about Dream Drop Distance? You can read a short summary of what we know at our forum. However, mostly the plot is unknown. So, we'd like to invite everyone to tell us. What do you think the plot of Kingdom Hearts 3D will be? The best theories will be selected and featured on the front page, so make sure you participate.

concerning the title of the game, i mostly see people theorizing about the "dream" and "drop" part. has anyone, like me, been trying to think of possibilities for the "distance" part?

Okay, here's mine (I'm gonna try to make it original, I promise!):

Sora and Riku are put under sleep to help them realize their hidden powers/memories/whatever. The further they 'drop' in the dreams, the more memories/power they awaken, or they find something about themselves that they never learn. They also learn to trust each other, though we have no idea if they interact in the dreams or not (would be cool if they did).

The final world should be Traverse Town, where they fight Ansem/Xemnas, depending on who we play at the time. I do agree that the Ansem/Xemnas thing is an illusion, but I also think that maybe some outside influence has penetrated their 'dream' and wants to test them. This fight could be labeled as the Mark of Mastery test. Remember that Terra and Aqua had to fight against each other in BBS in order to partake in the MoM; so maybe the Ansem/Xemnas fight could be that for Sora and Riku.

Maybe, by the end of the game, Sora learns that he is holding Ven's heart in his body and maybe even the memories that were locked inside him that Data Sora found. For Riku, I dunno, he might learn to finally harness his dark powers given to him by Terra (don't quote me on that :) ) and together they will awaken/heal the seven people who need their help.

Not sure what the shocking ending could be, other than Sora falls into darkness and Riku has to save him.

Since Nomura said the game is about the distance you drop in your dreams, msot people theorize Sora and Riku will drop great distances (Note how they can jump higher, and Sora falls off the bell tower)

Mine:

Sora was ready to exit his home to help those who need, but Mickey appeared there with a star shard (now he knows how to use it) and said that before anything, he must enter in the Exam which will see if him and Riku are worth enough to be Keyblade Masters. Yen Sid only requested that to Mickey because when he began to think about Xehanort's plans, he thought that maybe knowing that he is really strong, he could trick and cast Sora and Riku into the darkness. He was also afraid of Vanitas' or the unversed's return. Kairi went to Yen Sid's tower as well but only to watch.

As soon as they arrived, Yen Sid reported about Xehanort's return and said that he might be planning to recreate the X-Blade and remake the Keyblade War. He was also thinking that Xehanort may have found a way to bring his heartless and nobody to help him this time, and if his intuition was right, then they will have to fight against three Xehanorts.

Mickey wouldn't be able to stay looking at the exam because his duty was to save Aqua, and in order to do that, he was ordered to head to the real of darkness but he couldn't stay there for much time because Yen Sid wouldn't be able to locate him if he stood there for a long time due to the darkness' interference.

Yen Sid had already decided about how the exam would be, the two friends would change sides; Sora would be the one who chooses to plunge the islands with darkness to exit it, and Riku would have to face what Sora did. It was all a "dream" like Yen Sid himself called the Exam. However, except for Traverse Town and Destiny Islands, the worlds visited would be different so they could meet new people and face new enemies. Being that said, he used his magical powers to make the tower change the date to two years before. They couldn't talk with Yen Sid but he was there the entire time to watch their progress.

Both of them managed to get to the final fight. Much to their surprise, Riku's enemy was Ansem and Sora's Xemnas. However, they were just a data made by Yen Sid until the true Xehanort used the darkness to make them more stronger. His goal was to test their strength, and to analyze about how do they interact with the power of the darkness. Riku wasn't being able to defeat Ansem so he used his dark mode and made a smile arrive in Xehanort's face; he could somehow use this boy to help him in his plans. He even boosted his magic spell to give more strength to Ansem, but the data Ansem was defeated by Riku's darkness.

Sora was able to use only the light and Xemnas was defeated. Xehanort's face smiled again; he felt that Ventus' heart was inside Sora and if he managed to extract it, Vanitas would be reborn and his old plans, become reality. Xemnas' memories appeared in his head; Aqua's armor and Keyblade in Castle Oblivion. That could only mean that Ventus was in the castle because the girl was responsible to take care of him. He now began to search for this castle and for Ven's body. He thought that Aqua had already died since it passed so many years so she would't be there to interfere in his plans. His first goal was to find Ven's body, second to capture Sora and third to release the darkness inside Riku's heart.

Mickey didn't manage to find Aqua in the real of darkness at first, but in his second time, he found a man using a black coat. He quickly summoned his keyblade but discovered the man's identidy; Ansem the Wise. He first didn't believe but when he took the coat off, his eyes wouldn't believe in what he was seeing. How come Ansem survived the explosion? Unfortunately, not even he remembered. He just remembered about Sora, he didn't recognize Mickey.

During the explosion, he lost his memories and ended up in the realm of darkness. As soon as he asked about Aqua, the man said that he talked with her once, but also said that she was trying to get away from there and headed for the main part which was fully covered by darkness. Even with her keyblade, alone, she wouldn't stand a chance. Mickey quickly reported to Yen Sid who said that only Sora passed in the Exam. Yen Sid used his magic to rescue Ansem and he began to think of a way to make the man's memories return.

Mickey looked to the ground and saw a good luck charm with a message alongside it : "My friends need me". He quickly noticed that it only could be Aqua's wayfinder and began to run because he was very worried about her safety. She was surrounded by heartless and giant monster but her light didn't give up yet. He screamed her name and together, they defeated the heartless.

More heartless showed up and Aqua was hurt by one of them and she wouldn't awake. Mickey called Yen Sid's voice but Xehanort's voice also called him at the same time so he wasn't able to hear what Mickey wanted to say. Xehanort was telling him that he would have a great surprise soon and his voice faded away in moments.

Unfortunately, the time ended and the connection with Yen Sid, broke. Mickey was alone and without Yen Sid's help, he couldn't get away from there. Yen Sid told everything to Sora and Riku but said that their priority is to find Xehanort, he would be the one to make Mickey's rescue.

(I think this last part is the secret ending 8D)

i think that there's a good chance of dream drop distance including/being based particullary around the mark of mystey exam. However what would make me think otherwise is that after the secret ending clip to birth by sleep where yen sid tells mickey to call upon riku and sora to show the mark of mastery, the kingdom hearts reconnect title appears. which makes me wonder if the mark of mastery exam will not happen till then. I also agree though that the mention of "dream" in the title could suggest that the Sora and Riku we see in the trailer are just part of a dream, which i believe one solution could be that its taking place between that of kingdom hearts re coded and reconnect. In which Sora and Riku are reflecting upon the start of their journeys and some of the things they have faced along the way. As for the new worlds though i'm not entirely sure, along with this the mention of "new clothes" has me wondering if Nomura is really reffering to sora and Riku or not. I think this because at the beginning of birth by sleep, when Aqua becomes a keyblade master she recieved classified info however her clothes remain unchanged.

Another plot for dream drop distance i think could be that Riku and Sora are at yen sids tower, but have been put to sleep in order to take the mark of mastery exam (hence the term "dream). In order to be ready to fight of xehanort along with Mickey (who is already a keyblade master), Yen Sid creates illusions of Riku and Sora's enemies in order to face the darkness within each of them (this theory is based around birth by sleep in which Xehanort fills Terra's head with illusions and lies in order to increase the power of darkness insdide of him that he saw born during the mark of mastery exam, thus inevitably allowing Xehanort to use that very same darkness in order to take over Terra's body). Yen Sid may be preparing them just in case Xehanort tries to try something similar once he reawakens.

One question i have on my mind though is how does Nomura plan on showing the rebirth of Xehanort (i.e will he use Riku as a vessel to come back, as Terra allowed Riku to hold his keyblade in birth by sleep. which i think leaves a connection between riku and terra that xehanort may use to come back. Or will he simply rise again one day out of the blue? its anybody's guess really).

In the end though i believe its possible that Sora figures out a way to reach the ones whos hurting needs to be mended, as a result bringing about the title of the kingdom hearts reconncect. So we could be left with a cliff hanger of Sora now being a keyblade master and readying himself to set out on a journey to reawaken the memories sleeping inside of him and find Ven, Terra and Aqua so that he can reunit them and end their suffering. with the other Kingdom hearts i've witnessed so far as well it may be that Nomura will end the game with Sora and Riku (perhaps Kiari too) on destiny island stood on the beach looking out towards the sea and (like most kingdom hearts games so far) a sunset.

One last thing, i was thinking maybe (like kingdom hearts 1) Sora unlocks his heart in order to free Ven's heart and wake him up. Or better yet maybe another solution will be found, we know for certain though that Ven's heart resides within Sora.

So ya, we have Riku fearing the darkness, it raining sora's, nobodies in traverse town, xemnas and ansem shilouted behind another each fight Sora and Riku, and finally they are in kh1 clothing. This would be fine and all BUT unfortunately this game is actually going to be taking place after kh2, as a main game (meaning none of that coded unimportance), and lead into kh2. Where do they think they are going with this! I personally see no possible way they will pull this off so for the sake of that, lets just forget about the more confusing things and say:

This game takes place after kh coded in which Sora and Riku become masters, fight multiple xehanorts, and explore new and old worlds in paradoxical situaions.

To be honest, lets face the facts here: We have only seen about %10 of the story's main points. So instead of working at what we've scene and trying to incorporate that with the big picture what about the reverse

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance (3d)

The title comes from the phrase "the distance you fall in your dreams." Now where did this title come from (not refering to it being the oddest title yet) and how will it relate to the main game? "Birth by Sleep," the other main game title with a phrase, held a much more significant title than that of the other games, and for the sake of argument lets say 3d will be a simmilar case. Skipping the more obvious implications of the title, what about it extending past the dream like mark of mastery that we have seen and more importantly, how will the distance you fall in your dreams have a lasting impact on the series?

With sleep should come dreams. This already ties us to a previous theme being sleep (kh's eqivelent of death).

Hey, guys...

these are aesome theories. I just saw the trailer for the game...and boy was it sweet. Being a fanatic like we all are, I was left wanting more. Anyways, here's my theory on what will happen.

Ok...so the game opens up with Sora and Riku on Destiny Islands saying their farewells to Kairi so they could go on this huge new adventure. however they get stopped by King Mickey telling them that they need to make their way over to Yen Sid's tower first. Yen Sid then tells them that there's a new threat...but before they could go and put it in its pace, they need to pass a test. They end up being put to sleep and now they have to fight their way through their memories or dreams to find out the hidden truths that hold within them. Meanwhile, back on Destiny Islands Kairi thinks she see's Axel; but it isn't him and this new boy is with Saiix's original self. She follows them and sees everyone from the organization but hardly recognizes them. (Sorry guy's i'm a huge fan of org13...especially to Zexion and Demyx..and i want to know what Demyx's original name is. personally i think it's Myde...but i could be wrong. i had found Ienzo to be just unbelievable adorable.)

*lears throat*

Back to Sora and Riku, Sora learns about Ven's heart/soul (whichever you want to call it) as Riku comes to terms that he had given in to the darkness quicker than he had anticipated...due to the fact that Terra had given him the 'power of the keyblade' before Sora was 'given' it. Anyways, as they go through their dreams they learn of an old enemy comng back and is the cause of this new threat. once they wake up from their dreams they have this test that Yen Sid needed to do.

nce the test is over Sora and Riku had gained new powers with their keyblades and are ready to take on the true danger ahead which lies in KH3.

My theory is that Sora shall set off to Yen Sid's tower as King Mickey instructed him in the letter as well as telling him of whom he is going to save. Sora shall arrive and Yen Sid tells him that before he takes this journey, he must be tested for the rank of Keyblade master. Seeing as Riku is not there, and Yen Sid thinks that Sora will need Riku and he him for this test, he gives this test in Sora and Riku's dreams. During this time, Xehenort is bringing himself back through the lost escenses of both his heartless and his nobody. This giving him two different scources to wich he can use to his advantage and invades Sora and Riku's MoM test, just as he had Terra and Aqua's. Knowing that Sora will not be able to succeed in his quest without Riku, and knowing that Riku would still make a great host, Xehenort bases his deception more towards Riku, and tempers the darkness left in his heart during the test-- just as he had with Terra. After the test is finished, Yen Sid comes to them in their unison dream and tells that Riku has shown darkness lingering in his heart, and cannot let him pass the test. Sora takes off on his journey alone, and Xehenort ruthlessly bombards him with his nobody's escense while working on Riku with his heartless. Riku rejects the dirty tricks of his heartless and sets off to find Sora, realizing that they had been seperated on purpose. Meanwhile, Terra is still struggling inside Xehenort, trying to take back what was rightfully his. After finding Aqua and Ventus, they realise that the one place they could possibly find a way to free Xion, Axel, Roxas, and Namine is to go to Kingdom Hearts. This being what Xehenort was tricking them into doing all along, since he could no longer open the door to kingdom Hearts, Xehenort increases his barage of attacks, sending nobody and heartless after them. But as it looks like they were right in his trap, and about to be swallowed by the oncoming darkness, Terra plays his biggest card-- he gives what is left of himself over to Master Eraqus, who gives them a fighting chance of defeating Xehenort. They defeat Xehenort and Master Eraqus shows Sora how to bring Xion and Roxas out from himself, and tells him to do so with Kairi as well. Using Sora, ROxas, and Ventus's memories of Axel/Lea, Eraqus helps them find Lea's heart, that Axel had joined with upon dying. But upon all the rescent tainting of darkness from the Battles against Xehenort, his heartless, and his nobody, Kingdom Hearts erupts into chaos-- All the Keyblade warriors are put against they're most difficult adversary ever-- Kingdom Hearts itself. At the end of this battle, The worlds have been purged of the major darkness that had seperated them all, and the Worlds are together again.

... guess thats my extremely long theory. But that end part prob won't happen-- I don't think Namura would end the Kingdom Heart series.

Uh, just to let you know, unlike Terra, Riku can control his darkness now and uses it for good. Also, the Mark of Mastery can be about anything. Eraqus made his exam about controlling the darkness and Yen Sid's exam is about "trust". So Riku failing because of his darkness is not going to happen, and why would Yen Sid even summon him in the first place? After you said Riku failed I stopped reading. lol

Yes, I do agree that the Mark of Mastery is in a dream.

I don't feel like retyping what I think, so here's a link of my thread on what KH3D is about:
