Kingdom Hearts & MP System

Recommended Posts

KH1, because it actually forced you to use a level of strategy when consuming it and made the items you find useful, instead of just spamming one spell and then dodge rolling until your meter refilled.

KH1 was broken cuz MP Rage + MP Gift + MP Gift = literally infinite MP.

Combined with Leaf Bracer in FM, Sora was quite literally invincible after Mid-game if you knew how to play the game.

KH2's is infinitely better.

Wait why is MP Gift listed twice? Or is that intentional?

It also doesn't that future KH games continued this concept of "spamming one move & then dodge rolling" (BBS & DDD) although the player is using the command deck & not magic/mp since it wasn't in the game. This is why I hated the MF boss fight in BBS since their really wasn't much of a strategy to it.

At least in KH1, if Sora runs out of MP he had to FIGHT/ATTACK his enemies in order to regain that MP. Instead of spamming a move and dodging the attacks.

If you had all the relevant MP abilities in KH(FM), if you ran out of MP (and you're not low LV/LV1 while playing 1.5), you probably did something wrong. With all the good MP abilities equipped, you were almost always in a position to spam Cure.

KH2, while it did refill your MP, actually is more balanced, particularly with Cure usage.

Yeah, I don't think that's true either. I mean it's kind of true if you are JUST use Cure/Curaga but there are other spells.

I mean just the other day I did the Hades Timed Cup & still ran out of MP even with Goofy's MP Gift/MP Rages & Sora's MP Rages/MP Hastes & Lady Luck (Not a big Diamond Dust fan). And this was all on a playthrough where I picked the staff which gives Sora one more MP bar.

The Phantom Boss Fight also took a toll on my Sora's MP as well.

I prefer the KH2 MP system, with that one magic can be used much more in combat.

To be honest I didn't really like how fire or thunder were used in KH2. Especially fire.

That is one of the reasons why it isn't number1 on my list. I'm most only using reflect and cure.

I prefer the KH1 mp system where you also need to kill enemies for mp :).

I think that the MP system was best utilized in Kingdom Hearts II!  You could use all the spells you wanted, and then have a cooldown for when you'd run out of MP, which was fair!  It even restricted the use of Curaga to just one per MP bar, ya know?  It made you have to keep on battling without relying solely on magic to win the day, ya know? :3

Oops my bad, I meant to put "MP Haste".

That being said, MP in KH1 was completely broken; there really is no arguing around that. Being able to literally abuse the "hit and get MP back" system made items completely useless. It's rare that you'll actually find yourself using stuff like Ethers, especially mid-late game (with the exception of a few fights, aka Phantom), because you'll always have some MP to use. Have any of you guys ever seen a LV1 fight, one MP, against Sephiroth? Have you ever wondered how that's even possible? Because every combo you do completely refills your single blue MP gauge, meaning you quite literally have infinite MP...at 1 MP. That's only just an example of how broken the system is.

KH2 nerfed Cure. Heavily. And that was a good thing, because you can't spam it over and over again. Even Ethers (without any Item Boosts) only restore around half of your MP recharge gauge, giving you a cooldown. This creates a balance between spamming spells and using other options.

Honestly, KH1 MP system wouldn't be anywhere as broken if Cure took, say, 3-4 MP bars each. However, the fact that it only takes 1 MP bar and heals a good chunk of your HP means that you can pretty much abuse and spam it anywhere.
