Favorite Underrated Games?

Recommended Posts

Every now and then I think back on games i really enjoyed but noticed they never received a lot of attention and ultimately sold poorly. What're you're favorite underrated games?

Here's my list:

(they've all received good scores on Metacritic)

Resonance of Fate

The game has a really fresh and unique battle system you couldn't find anywhere else but what may have hurt the game is that exactly and  how extremely hard it is, Dark Souls has nothing on this game. (This is the best selling of the games on the list, it sold 1 million)

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom

The adventure, fighting mechanics, puzzles and boss battles are all solid but i think how childish Majin comes off as in the trailers is what turned people away.

Pandora's Tower

This was the Wii's swan song, it came out at the dead end of the Wii's life cycle which is why i believe it was widely ignored. Its very zelda-esque in terms of gameplay, dungeons and boss battles but on top of that there was something surprising, it was a dating sim which is something i normally wouldnt be caught dead playing! I don't want to spoil too much so take a look at the trailer and try the game out yourself. It has a good English Dub but the japanese trailer is the best to watch.

The Last Story

Another game with a unique battle system and a release near the end of the Wii's life cycle. This one however is the best rated of the games I listed and was made by the creator of the Final Fantasy series. (8/8.5 on Metacritic, all the other games received between 7 and 8)

I knew about "Resonance of Fate" and "Pandora's Tower". I haven't played both but have seen some playthroughs on youtube. Excellent games they are.

Motoi Sakuraba was the composer for "Resonance of Fate (ENG)"/"End of Eternity (JP)", he also composed music for the Tales Series and the Golden Sun series. Thats how I found out about Resonance of Fate.

As for Pandora's tower, it had quite a heartbreaking plot (Elena T_T). I like to think of it as the lovechild between FF12, Studio Ghibli and Zelda.

Not sure if The Last Story was that underrated, it was definitely overshadowed by Xenoblade Chronicles though. I hope Nintendo do something with that IP for their next system that's for sure.

I picked up Pandora's Tower on the Wii U VC, but haven't had a chance to play it yet...

Regardless games I can think of off the top of my head (can't speak for their sales though, but I feel not a lot of people got to experience them).

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, the game that Bravely Default was spawned from. While the game is far from perfect, it was a solid RPG for the DS I felt.

BoxBoy! From the creator's of Kirby, this game is definitely one that slipped under the radar of a number of people. Reviews for the game are solid and it has received a sequel in Japan (still hoping for it to come here). It is one of the most intriguing puzzle games I've played and one that I'm glad my 3DS has. The game is only $5/€5 as well and for the amount of content on offer it's a steal of a purchase. I cannot recommend this little title enough.

There's a number of games that I can think of that are good, but I'm not sure if they are underrated. If I could use this opportunity to say though, I think Chain of Memories is the most underrated Kingdom Hearts game out there. If I can think of more games I'll edit them in though.

I have played at least two of your list and those happen to be Resonance of Fate and The Last Story. However, I've only really completed The Last Story. The Last Story is definitely on my list. It came in at the end of the Wii's life cycle, but it held a beautiful story and the characters were all great. I never got the chance to play Pandora's Tower, so for me this was the swan song of the Wii.

My underrated title is one that entered in the early days of the PS2. Okage: Shadow King is quite the gem. It's a lovely RPG that takes Ari on quest when his shadow is possessed by the "Evil" Shadow King Stan. I never got to finish it and I'm long away from the time I did play it, but this lovely gem is so underrated, not a single time I've mentioned it has anyone known what I am talking about. But now, people can find out all about Okage, as Sony made the decision to put it on PS4 under their PS2 games.

My favorite underrated games would have to be:

Klonoa 2 Lunatea's Veil

It's an old PS2 platform with an amazing story. I'm not even really into platformers, but this game just does it so wonderfully that even now I'm still playing it.

Legend of Dragoon

A very highly underrated PS1 RPJ. In my opinion, this game and FFVII are at a tie for how great they are. A great battle system, and a story that rivals that of FFVII (might be nostalgia speaking here but it's still pretty good).

And that's all I can think of right now. :)

i'd say the Klonoa series is pretty underrated. anyone with access to PSN can buy the first game for about $5 and i'd say it's a good purchase if you like platformers.

i guess maybe Gravity Rush could be considered underrated? the first game has it's issues of course but i found it to be enjoyable. hopefully the second one puts the series on the map.

that's about it, really. most of the games i play, i heard about from others who already loved them or i just so happened to stumble upon games that had become cult classics or late bloomers (Deadly Premonition and Psychonauts).

Resonance of Fate is one I played (drifted from it a while ago just as I got new games, no reason with the gameplay that turned me away or anything), and I enjoyed it, over the summer I'll prob get back into it,  I also have some other games that are regarded as hidden gems (great but not much public response to them), however haven't got round to playing myself to comment on yet.

One game I really enjoyed that tends to be disliked it Crash Bandicoot Tag Team Racing.  Bored of platforming?  Race.  Bored of racing?  You can platform!  I've completed it 3 times and would happily clock it again if it was released on the PS3/4 with trophies, I thought it was an enjoyable platformer with a fun twist (I'm not saying it's brilliant but it's my fav Crash game (and aye I haven't completed Crash 1-3 yet, never had a PS1 when they came out though I have 1 I believe from the PSN store, I was annoyed with it cause I couldn't save far as I researched less I completed a bonus level.  If I'm busy and have to run I don't wan to lose progress or be forced to try find a bonus level and rush it to just save))

One game that I love and feel was underrated would be Eternal Sonata.

I felt that it was pretty underrated considering how unique of a game it is.  Sure it has some corny dialogue now and again that's good for a few laughs, but overall the game is beautifully orchestrated and it is one that I've been able to play a couple of times now.  From the graphics to the plot and the characters I find that it is just a lovely game with so many positive attributes.  I seldom hear about this game and it seems entirely underrated to me.

Klonoa was one of my childhood favorites.

Odin Sphere in my opinion is very underrated, I 100% think more people should play it. And the best thing is a remaster for it is coming out this year :)

Zelda 2 the Adventure of Link(It may be a side scroller and hard as hell but its still fun)

Pandora Tower

The Last Story

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 1 & 2(The soundtrack sucks and it doesn't play like Castlevania but they are still fun for what they are)

Metroid Other M(This one should probably in the underappreciated category but whatever.I understand why people hate this game so much,it doesn't play like Metroid and the story sucks. Its by far my least favorite Metroid game but I think its a fine action game)

The Tales series(I think they are getting slightly more popular nowaday but still not enough people play them, they're awesome)

Rayman 2 the great escape

Final Fantasy VIII(of course its FF everybody know that series but I think FFVIII is the underrated entery of the main series along with FFV)

Naruto Clash of Ninja series

Pac Man World 1 & 2(He's such an iconic character but I never heard anyone talking about any of his other games, the Pac Man world are pretty good 3D platformers, the first game is on PSN but unfortunatly the second and 3rd game are not,I had to get them from ebay)
