What do you guys think about Dream Drop Distance? Did you like it, Did you not. Please give a reason..

Recommended Posts

It was okay.  I enjoyed the gameplay and the end of the story was interesting.  I cannot truly compare it to the main series because I think there are other KH titles that are more well-rounded and so much better, but I don't hate Dream Drop Distance.  I just don't really care for it much.

I enjoyed both the story and gameplay, but it wasn't my favorite game in the series. I loved getting to play as Riku again, and seeing him become a master was great, I'm not a fan of the whole time travel thing and sometimes it still confuses me. xD But I could never truly throw shade at this game for one reason, Symphony of Sorcery, it's my favorite world in the game and definitely one of my favorites in the series.

So I guess in short I wouldn't say KH3D is a bad game, it was actually quite enjoyable, but at the same time, I wouldn't call it the best in the series either.

In my own personal opinion, I don't care how broken or technically bad a game is.If it's fun i'll play it, that's why Dream Drop Distance is my second favorite in the series along with Birth by sleep..

Agreed! To me the spam made the game funner and funnier. DDD is definitely up there when it comes to my top 5 favorite kingdom hearts games gameplay wise. :)

Pros:

  • Looked good for a 3DS game
  • Progressed the story
  • Gorgeous soundtrack
  • Great core gameplay

Cons:

  • Floaty as hell, although not as bad as BBS
  • Unbalanced as hell
  • Made the plot impossible to understand if you are new to the series or a casual trying to get into the plot
  • Stupidly bad difficulty curve
  • Very annoying boss
  • Flow motion is way too over-powered
  • Wtf is Julius?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ pretty much this

I have to agree that it had a really... weird difficulty increase in the last world. But it was fun all around, it was beautiful in every sense of aesthetics, and I've replayed it a million times. I mean, it was also hyped as hell, and the story was just amazing in the last world, although a bit difficult to understand. It's still up there as one of my favorite games ever, and I definitely liked it more than BBS.

I enjoyed it.  I do have some things I would change like:More interactivity/commotion/npcs in the wide empty rooms.  But I understand they would have been limited by hardware, they had a similar issue in BBS IMO.

A quicker way of levelling yourself/dream eaters.  Just as someone who likes 100%ing it obviously got repetitive trying to get everyone to max and unlocking all their abilities.

That's really it, I didn't have many other things I disliked.  Flowmotion was overpowered and there was a big difficulty curve with worlds, but flowmotion still enabled you to survive that since it was over powered so...

I do think if the training and looking after pets it it's still the same as the 3DS version, that it's better suited for a handheld than a home game with the remake.  Same way pokemon games are better on handhelds than they would be a home console, the portability makes it easier to look after them whenever the moment strikes you, instead of having to settle in front of a screen in a room and feel like a grind.

I LOVED getting your own spirits and bonding with them.  Yes there were some confusing parts, but it's Kingdom Hearts so that's to be expected.  The big reveals or "plot twists" were natural.  They seamed to have been part of the story from the start.  The gameplay was pretty straightforward.

I enjoyed it. It actually my favorite title. I thought it helped enrich the whole story line.

THANK GOODNESS I WAS PREPARING FOR THE SALT I'D HEAR FOR BEING THE ONLY ONE WHO'S FAVORITE IS DREAM DROP DISTANCE.

Dream Drop Distance is that problematic fave that you hear multiple legitimate criticisms for but can't help but love. The story while admittedly faulty in some areas kept me thoroughly entertained (Sora's a cheese but a likable cheese), and my inner five year old looked at the Dream Worlds and Time Travel in complete fascination despite the complications to plot. Riku's character development was cathartic, the Dream Eaters faintly reminded me of Pokémon which always puts me in a good mood. The ridiculously unbalanced gameplay was wicked fun to manipulate and play around with...

I love Dream Drop Distance fight me

I liked the soundtrack a lot, and the gameplay was nice. The Fantasia bit was fantastic, and seeing Pleasure Island (Prankster's Paradise) in Kh was really good.

HATE the Three Mousekateers world, and how it just didn't seem like it needed a full world. And the Flowmotion got annoying fast.

In short, it was good, but had flaws.

I don't completely hate the game. The gameplay was enjoyable although it wasn't near the level of the console titles. The deck system was more balanced than in BBS which was nice. The unbalanced balloon commands and the fact that the drop meter was counting during boss battles were a pretty bad idea but overall i thought the battle system was fine.

The time travel aspect of the story however ruined the whole game for me. I don't mind time travel in games in general but DDD just did it horribly. The game is really hard to understand and i really hate the direction the series is going right now. I even had to look up interviews just to understand what the hell was going on which I never had to do before.

I hope the writing will improve in the future, otherwise i'll probably drop the series after KH3.

Oh, I'm so happy that I'm not the only one who has DDD as their favorite KH!  And you took the words outta my mouth Shimmy, because you summed up my thoughts exactly, so thank you.

Dream Drop Distance is one of my favorite entries in the series, alongside Birth By Sleep and KHII! :D

I loved the gameplay, and thought that Flowmotion was a cool new concept!  Also, being able to get abilities via bonding with Dream Eaters was a plus, too!  And the fact that we were playing as both Sora and Riku was something that made me very happy!  The only thing I'd have to say I hated about the game, well, okay, not overall hate, but did dislike, was the Drop System!  I mean, dropping at any other given moment didn't bother me, but when I was fighting a boss and was THIS close to claiming victory, BOOM!  Sora or Riku drop on me!  And it doesn't help that the boss fight starts over when you resume a dropped character's side of things! xD

But yeah, other than that, I have no gripes on the gameplay!

Story-wise, I loved it!  The hype up for Kingdom Hearts III is apparent in this game, and I loved the return of Ansem, Xemnas, Xehanort and tons of other familiar faces! I also loved the introduction to Young Xehanort, who is another of my favorite villains, alongside Xehanort, Marluxia and Vanitas!  But yeah, I really loved the story, and how it basically foreshadows the inevitable clash of light vs. darkness!

I'm actually currently replaying the game right now, and am on my way to the Country Of The Musketeers!  I put the game on hold momentarily, though, since I'm playing Final Fantasy X HD! X3

But yeah, Dream Drop Distance is definitely one of my favorite entries in the series! :3

Wait 2.8 is already out :)? Better ask it after release ^^.

3D is one of my favorite together with KH1, KH2.

We got our favorite characters to play. 3D has a great list of worlds. The one I prefer the most is Fantasia.

I only liked Flick Rush a bit Mirage Arena was better. After all diving worlds was awesome!

I guess I'm the only one so far that really disliked the game. I'll list my personal reasons.

Gameplay:

1. Dream Eaters. These rainbow colored creatures made it hard for me to take the game seriously. Not only did I think that they were terrible companions, but dream eater bosses aren't intimidating, and they certainly aren't memorable. Plus the whole mini game to get them to like you was exhausting and I could never get a single one's affinity to level up all the way due to the massive amount of time it takes.

2. Abilities. In this game I really disliked how some abilities were specifically tied to dream eaters and couldn't be permanently equipped.

3. OP commands. Now while I do prefer the command menu from KH1 and KH2, I don't mind the command deck. What I do mind is that in every game it appears in there is one OP ability that basically makes it pointless to bother collecting or equipping anything else. In BBS it was thunder surge, in this it's the balloon spells.

4. Empty worlds. This could be due to hardware limitations but this game is completely void of any life other than dream eater enemies. Even characters that inhabit the worlds only appear in cutscenes. This made the entire game feel incredibly lonely.

5. Flow motion. It wasn't the worst, but I found it got annoying quickly.

As an aside, I felt the one world I was looking forward to most "the symphony of sorcery" got the least amount of attention or care. There are parts of it that are pretty but it just feels neglected compared to the other worlds in my opinion.

Story: (here's where most of my problems lie)

1. Lack of death. No one ever stays dead which makes advancing the plot feel meaningless. In this title most of the organization is back. This really bothers me since it makes the effort of defeating them in previous titles seem pointless. This is especially true for Axel who sacrificed himself and had a noble death and then comes back to life completely negating is sacrifice and the meaning behind it. All of this feels like cheap fan service which makes me feel animosity toward these characters that I originally liked.

2. Lea getting a keyblade. I mentioned how the org characters coming back was fan service and this is the worst example. Keyblades are supposed to be rare legendary weapons. They are passed on through the inheritance ceremony. Axel getting one just feels like they are giving them to everyone and cheapens what the keyblade means. And the explanation of "he was sent to a space where time was accelerated so he could learn how to use it in a short time" is insulting. Axels chakrams and Fire abilities were already cool and he could have helped out in his own way. This single scene ruined Axel/Lea for me.

3. Time travel. This is a terrible thing to introduce into a story. It's OP and can potentially introduce loop holes and paradoxes galore. It's a Deux Ex Machina and felt like it was only used as a means to have Xemnas and Ansem SOD make a return and make Master Xehanort look like he planned all of this out like an omniscient God.

4. Saving characters who don't need saving. Terra Ventus and Aqua clearly need to be saved. They suffered horribly and they directly tie into master xehanort and his plan. Roxas, Namine, and Xion on the other hand don't. This is another example of fan service. At the end of KH2 Roxas and Namine finally got to become whole again and were genuinely happy. That's where their stories ended. It was satisfying. Bringing them back over saturates the story with characters and there isn't any reason in the plot for them to make a return. This is even more true with Xion. Her role in Days was only as a plot device to allow Roxas to question his allegiance to the organization, something he could have done without her. If she's brought back there's nothing for her character to do. I love all of these characters but if we bring them back it cheapens their endings and just has them standing around.

I did find some of the bosses fun and the overall plot was alright. There are good things I can say about this game. Unfortunately I just felt that these flaws were too much. But this is all my opinion so I understand if people disagree.

Every single reason you said has truth to it.There are two things I would like to mention though:1. Fan Service: I don't see fan service as a bad thing at all, if you over do it yes it could become annoying and make the plot seem less meaningful. Yet I feel like the way Square Enix brought them back was done beautifully to the point where I don't mind it. Your right there does need to be deaths in the series I totally agree with you on that, but it's nothing that any other popular game hasn't done before. Fan service overall isn't necessarily bad neither is it good, imo it all depends on how you do it. Which i'll say again Square Enix did perfectly (imo)2.Time Travel: I see this as a popular reason for why people don't like Dream Drop Distance. I don't personally understand why because they haven't even finished explaining it yet. I look at Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance as a Prologue to Kingdom Hearts 3 (which it pretty much is)  the ending of Dream Drop Distance proves this, by foreshadowing the final clash in Kingdom Hearts 3. Everything mentioned at the end of Dream Drop Distance I feel isn't finished being explained, I'm confident that Time Travel will become more clear once 2.8 comes out and we're finally able to play 0.2 birth by sleep, or when Kingdom Hearts 3 comes out.Overall I respect your opinion as everyone has their own I even agree with a lot of your points. Yet for me personally if the games fun i'll play it no matter how broken it may be.

I enjoyed the game. I liked the worlds. I liked the gameplay. Flowmotion was a really fun broken mechanic.

The story, in particular from TWTNW on, was a clusterfudge. I remember having to actually pause one of the cutscenes to sit back and comprehend what was being said. I found the game to have a more open ending than Chain of Memories did in terms of bridging the gap. Though I guess it remains to be seen how Kingdom Hearts III starts off and ties into KH3D's ending.

I dunno, it gets a lot of hate for it's story and balance issues, but I liked Dream Drop Distance and I'm looking forward to playing it again in 2.8.

I liked it, but it feels like COM 2.0 in that it hinges everything on a single general gameplay element, dream eaters, when the series is at its best when it gives you more than one or two things to do.

I didn't like the game. I found the dream eaters a very tedious Pokemon Amie or Nintendogs simulator, I hated how the abilities worked and flowmotion and OP commands made the game broken to a bad degree.

Storywise I liked Riku's half as his character seemed to finally be full circle but I also disagree with this 'recompletion' excuse to bring people back and Lea's keyblade felt way to forced and fan serviced.

Time Travel doesn't bother me to much since Xehanort said himself he can't change nothing so I just saw that as he's making a paradox to mess with the present even if he can't change the past.
