What kind of spelling do you use for words like...

Recommended Posts

Favorite/Favourite and Defense/Defence? I know there's a regional difference between the different spellings, and I thought I might ask. As always, nobody will judge you for spelling it one way or another, so don't be shy. :3

Rock on!

I'm an American, so I spell favorite, color, honor, etc. without the u. I think defense is the American way to spell it, but I always liked defence better.

This is probably just my regional bias, but I actually really dislike the additional u in colour, favourite, honour, etc. It doesn't change the way the word is pronounced, looks worse, and is really unnecessary. I honestly think the US got it right in changing the spellings.

It doesn't really matter to me that much.  I use the American because that's what I'm used too (and my spelling is bad anyway) but I don't mind what other people use.  As long as it's a correct spelling that's fine with me.

I actually interchange between them a lot.

I was born and raised in Northern Ireland so I learnt the British spelling of things growing up (though I learnt the American spelling of organization through Kingdom Hearts), but a lot of the IDE's I used were created in America, so they use the American spelling (i.e. I would be able to call a command Color3f, but it won't work if I call Colour3f).  I flip through both spellings, neither bothers me, but it has bothered some other people here where I've used American spelling instead of the British way.

I actually find it ridiculous when either Brits or American's correct the other to their form of spelling online, some people really passionately hate the spelling they don't use.

I actually switch between the American and the British versions, which is weird because I'm from and still live in the U.S., and I have no family members from other countries.  I think its because a lot of books I read and even some video games I play use the British way of spelling.  However, whenever I write stuff in Microsoft Word, I always use the American versions since according to Word: 'realise,' 'colour,' ect. are not words and says the spellings are incorrect; and I just hate having words underlined in red!
