Exiblade7 1,917 Posted March 4, 2016 (edited) When I look at video game forums other than this one, I keep on seeing posts on how bad story in video games are. I disagree with those posts. because If you think about it, story in video games are relatively young compared to books, movies, tv shows, ect. With this in the back of our minds, let me say this, I honestly think that story in video games is going to get better because of it being really young. It will get better over the years just like other forms of entertainment. please keep in mind that I know that video games don't have to have a story in order to be good. It's really just that I LOVE story in video games because it is like the salt on food that makes it even better. Let's use Tales of xillia as an example. That game has really good gameplay in my opinion and the story encouraged me to play it even more. To put it simply, I just love it when story interacts with video games. It makes the game pretty interesting in my opinion. Soravids 1,056 Posted March 4, 2016 (edited) To me video games already have the best stories in the entertainment industry. They are longer, allow much side content, and sometimes your actions affect the story. They are awesome! PS: Tales of Xillia 1 & 2 are pure gold my friend. The Transcendent Key 12,109 Posted March 4, 2016 Honestly, I'll never understand why some people just don't like story in video games! But hey, it's their opinion, so I can't impose on them since they're just speaking their minds, ya know? But to me, honestly, one of the things that keeps me hooked the most in a video game is its story, ya know? Gameplay is great and graphics are great, but to me, as long as there's a good story, I'll play a video game, regardless of graphical quality. Even if sometimes the gameplay can be a bit iffy, if there's a good story, I'll tolerate the less good gameplay, ya know? As for story in video games, I do believe that video games right now offer some of the best stories out there! You see, with video games, you have the opportunity to expand and create a living, breathing world in which you can pinpoint what happens in a way that books and movies just can't, ya know? I'm not saying that every video game out there has a godly story, but I'm just saying that video games have an increasingly strong potential to tell immersive, amazing stories! The Kingdom Hearts series, for one, has an amazing story, in my opinion! And I believe the Tales games are also amazing in story, and I just love how they resemble anime so much! It's like I'm playing through an anime! Xillia was my first Tales game, and I haven't looked back since! I've gone on to play Tales Of Symphonia 1 and 2 and Tales Of Graces F! I think my next Tales game will probably be Tales Of Zestiria! Also, Final Fantasy, The Legend Of Zelda, Chrono Trigger, Mario And Luigi (RPG series) and a variety of other games out there have amazing stories just waiting to be explored! Ah, being a gamer is such an amazing thing! 6 OmegaForte, advfox, MythrilMagician and 3 others reacted to this
OmegaForte 1,674 Posted March 4, 2016 *Claps* Well said. I can tolerate a game if it has a great story to it, but to an extent. I mean if the gameplay is very shitty, I'd much rather watch a lp.
Movies798 1,358 Posted March 4, 2016 I agree with everything you said. If the game has an interesting story that I might like than I'll keep on playing till the very end. And even if the game has some terrible gameplay I'll still play because the story is interesting and I want to see where it goes.

Headphone Jack 1,147 Posted March 4, 2016 i think i could understand why people may think the writing in games is awful. sure if you compare a game released today to a game released 20 years ago the writing may have improved but only within that medium for comparison. it seems that the writers and developers are often not seeing eye to eye when working on a game and this leads to some writing issues, but i guess because games offer so much more than just what writing can provide no one pays it much mind. it's not like a book or movie where, more often than not, the entertainment of the audience hinges on the writing. games are still a pretty new medium so there's room to grow and improve. i'm sure one issue is that developers try to make their games, an interactive medium, more like a cinematic experience, a non-interactive medium, leading them to try and emulate dialogue that they think you would find in a movie. this mash up of the two mediums could also be an issue because on the one hand they're trying to present the story similar to how a movie would, but on the other hand we're playing a game and the pacing is not the same between the two. is it even an apt comparison to make between the writing of games and movies? now of course there are games out there with good writing. Portal 2 comes to mind almost instantly as it feels like a game that really makes use of the medium to tell it's story but that's just my opinion. basically, i can see where people who feel that way are coming from. the writing in games doesn't bother me, personally, though. 1 Exiblade7 reacted to this

It doesn't bother me either because if the story isn't that good, the gameplay usually makes up for it.
MythrilMagician 6,963 Posted March 4, 2016 look up "story in video games are bad" on google and you'll see them What the hell are these people playing? A lot of the recent games I've played like Bravely Default have a pretty good story. Those people are playing games, where gameplay is a bigger focus than story.
