Is the FF13 PC port bad?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently downloading Final Fantasy 13 on my laptop via steam, but I've heard mixed things about the PC port itself. Are the framerate drops really bad?

My laptop specs

processor-i5  4210U CPU @1.70 GHZ 2.40 GHZ

8 GB of RAM, 64 bit processor, 64 bit OS

Will my laptop be okay to run it?

Can't say, it may struggle. Steam has the minimum specifications on each product page. So go to the FF13 page and scroll down and it will be there. Seeing as your laptop doesn't have a graphics card it might struggle, but I can't say for sure. Also, the PC port is good, ignore those complaining, they may be putting the settings higher than necessary.

I have a graphics card, 2 actually, AMD radeon and an Intel HD R graphics card. I looked on steam but I don't really understand it since some of my specs meet the requirements but others don't :P

It's playable. The game stutters quite a lot and there are many annoying aspects of the port. I would say it's a bad port but the game itself is fun once you get through the 20 hour tutorial.

This site is useful for figuring out if you can run a game: http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=3513&game=Final%20Fantasy%20XIIIYou know your CPU but you just need to find out what your specific GPU is.

Wow, it hasn't stuttered for me so far (up to fighting Odin).

Well, you should be okay, but don't expect great performance.

It probably happens to you but you just don't notice it... It is well documented that FFXIII has issues. This port isn't the worst I've ever played, though, it was slightly better than Arkham Knight.

Did you figure out what your GPU is? It should be pretty easy to check whether your computer could run it using the website I linked before

Slightly? That game's problems became widespread news. People's issues with XIII were the graphic options and frame rate, first of which was fixed and the later isn't even that bad unless you want 60fps for some reason.

If you aren't someone obsessed with frame rate you're good to go.

I'm basing it entirely off my own experience with the game. Arkham Knight ran like crap (before the patches) but it never crashed or anything for me. FFXIII crashed a few times and lacked basic PC features expected of games. Running at 30fps is fine but the stuttering was horrible. At least Arkham Knight was eventually fixed and I could run it at a steady 60fps most of the time. For a port of a 5+ year old game FFXIII was horrible.

Here is someone else's analysis of the stuttering issues of FFXIII: http://www.pcgamer.com/final-fantasy-xiii-and-xiii-2-port-analysis-durantes-verdict/#page-2

I've seen their analysis. They even suspect Crystal Tools is the problem. As I said, as long as you don't care about frame rate you're good to go.

That is true. As I said, the game is playable. But saying it is a good port is a lie. It lacks many features expected of a PC game and has very poor performance for such an old game. Half-assed port by Square Enix.
