Censorship confirmed in fire emblem fates in the west

Recommended Posts

Um, okay Ninty

NOTE: Actually read the convo scripts

I'm still kinda paraphrasing because it's still weird to talk about the things out of context.

So the thing is Soleil has a weakness for cute girls (she literally faints around them), so Kamui/Corrin puts magic powder into her drink so she sees people as the opposite gender, so she can "train" with seemingly genderbent Kamui/Corrin and overcome her fainting problem.

The first issue is that apparently people interpreted the magic powder bit as Corrin drugging Soleil. I guess I can see how someone would think that, but tbh that notion didn't cross my mind while I was reading the script. Besides, Corrin doesn't take advantage of Soleil or anything, and he even tells her about the powder and apologizes for putting it in her drink without her knowing, so those things might have influenced my view on the part in question.

The second issue, according to the article, is that the whole training thing could be interpreted as "gay conversion therapy".

I have no idea how people would come to that conclusion. The training was so Soleil would be able to not faint around cute girls, not so that she wouldn't be attracted to them anymore. Yeah, the training doesn't work, but as far as I know it's not like Corrin was trying to make it fail.

On another note, the end of the last convo is... a bit weird now that I think about it, but I don't know how the characters are, so can't really say much there.

The title's just asking for mad responses. Saying that a controversial scene was removed would be a lot better, but of course, you can't bait complainers with a title like that.Given the content being changed, I don't think this is a big deal. A lot of people took the scene the wrong way, and it stirred up a lot of controversy from what I heard. After the Tomodachi Life incident, I doubt they'd want people finding another excuse to assert the fake claim that Nintendo hates homosexuality. It would be nice to have it unedited, but then there would be even more controversy here. We don't even know how they're altering it anyway.

Huh, didn't really think of/remember that point.

I saw someone else use it to explain this, and I forgot about it until then. xD It sounds like a good guess for the reasoning behind this decision, though. I also saw at least one article that was making this out to be gay conversion, so NoA likely knows how controversial this was in the Japanese release. I didn't view it as an offensive thing, but a lot of people inevitably will, sadly. :/ At least this is the only change mentioned so far. I doubt that the controversy behind Xenoblade X's censorship went unnoticed by NoA, so they'll hopefully try to do as few edits as possible.

I guess with that in mind it makes a bit more sense.

The people that get mad dont like censorship of any form ever whether its forced or self no matter what it is. Devs just need to stop putting these things in in the first place, it'll help them avoid the backlash from when they inevitably remove it for western release.

I never understood why people expect a company in a country where gay marriage isnt even legal to put it in their game, and a kids game at that.

Isn't that worse in some ways, though? Developers shouldn't be afraid to include something just because of fan reaction. I'd much rather people be called out for poor/uneducated storytelling than have nobody take risks at all.In this case, it's obvious people are gonna go "muh censorship", but if anything, it sounds like Nintendo is going to clarify the intent of that scene and make it so that a poor translation doesn't ignite the spark of Tumblr outrage.Unrelated, is this game actually good? Is it accessible without having played any of the other games? I always feel like I want to get into Fire Emblem, but just don't have the time.

As I understand sim games, the more options the better, y'know? I think the point was that there was already romance options in-game; they'd have to have specifically coded in blocks and incompatibilities for same-sex relationships, which is kind of silly.

I would have preferred if they just altered the scene to make it more acceptable in the West. Make them 'cast a spell' and still have her see people the opposite gender but alter the dialogue to make it seem less like 'gay conversion'

Nvm seems like that's probably what Nintndo is doing. Just altering the scene slightly

Just reading the conversation makes me wonder why censorship was even needed.

Like, seriously though, this conversation sounded like something from a fanfiction or something. :P

  • Kamui: Yes. I called you here today to ask you to marry me.
  • Soleil: … Marry…? Eeh!? EEEEEEHHHHHH!?

The support convos in Awakening sounded like a B rated romantic movie. I'm 110% sure fates will be the same.
