Does anyone else want fewer cutscenes in games?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else want fewer cutscenes in games? I can't help but feel that we occasionally teeter on the brink of having 35 hour movies with some playable bits in between rather than having a game. I get that the creators want to tell a story, but sometimes there are better ways to go about doing it than stopping the game entirely to show off the cutscenes.

Depends on the game. I love the cutscenes in KH. Video games now are mostly interactive movies, which I don't mind since I love story, but some games are better without as much cutscenes.

Like everyone is saying, it depends on the game.  When it comes to RPGs, I will take as many cutscenes as I can get so I can learn more about the story and the world.  But when it comes to a FPS or puzzler, I do not care that much as those games are supposed to be about the gameplay.

i think it's okay as long as it's executed properly, but for the most part yes i do wish there were fewer cut scenes. When I was playing The Last Of Us I kept feeling like I wasn't doing much, I felt like I was just watching a TV show where I occasionally got to control things.Granted cut scenes can at times be really important, otherwise the story can get difficult to follow or just feel a bit dull, but I want games to be sort of different from movies. I like it when games give you the freedom to choose more than once direction to go in instead of forcing you to follow a set path.I get I never really shut up about Dark Souls on here, but I feel like mentioning it's a good example of how you can still tell a story without excessive cut scenes.

it only irks me when a game tries to wrestle control away from the player to throw in cinematics or whatever. and even then that's only on a second playthrough. Uncharted 3 gets really annoying at times when you try to do one thing, but the game wants you to do another thing to trigger an event. it's little stuff but it still gets on my nerves.

overall i feel like cutscenes should be used to help get across the story and compliment the gameplay. but developers are going to do whatever they feel like would work best for their vision so i can't really argue. i can only say whether or not i liked their method of story telling.

Cutscenes you can skip? I don't mind those. Cut scenes you CAN'T skip? Big problem. In the original version of KH1 you could not skip cut scenes, and it was SOOO boring... Luckily they fixed that in 1.5, but some game companies forget to do that sometimes. Just the tiniest of cut scenes can be annoying. Super Mario Maker has this slightly long credits whenever you beat any 100-Mario Challenge, and you cannot skip this! You have to do these challenges almost 100 times to get every costume and you can't speed up the process because you can't skip this. I guess I can wait, but it's still kinda annoying really.

Rock on!

Another good example is Bioshock, with how you can learn the story and listen in on what the characters have to say while still being able to move, play, and not have to stop the game for minutes at a time, all while still getting an immersive and engaging plot.

Ahh I'm not personally bothered by cutscenes at all no matter how tedious. I actually like them quite a bit. That being said I'm aggressively passive so I might not be the best at making a judgment

As others said before- I guess it depends on the game? I don't mind a story no matter how stupid or needless, but I can understand why some would want to skip the unnecessary parts.

Depends on the game but It does get very annoying when you're constantly stopped from playing the game because some games feel the need to have a 3 minute cutscene every 10 steps you take. I wouldn't want them completely removed obviously but I hope developers would ask themselves first if it's really necessary to take control away from the player to explain a certain thing before making a cutscene.

Final Fantasy XIII is an interactive movie.

Everyone's already said it, but it just depends on the game you're playing.

Personally, I don't mind cutscenes. Even if they involve characters I hate I just roll my eyes or groan and watch on through. The only time where I skip cutscenes is if I'm doing a speedrun.
