Sora...What Happened?!

Recommended Posts

Have any of you guys noticed that after Kingdom Hearts 1 and Chain of Memories, Sora's I.Q. has dropped dramatically? Its horrible! For example In Kingdom Hearts 2 he's alright but his comebacks are terrible but in Kingdom hearts dream Drop Distance he's out right Dumb! What Happened?!?! How is he smarter in KH1 than he is in KH Dream drop distance! Isn't he supposed to be older therefore more wiser??!! I Still think he's adorable though!

I'm not denying that bad writing has a hand in this (because it most definitely does; especially with II), but there is some reasoning behind it all, I think.

During Dream Drop Distance, I'm pretty sure that Ven's personality was leaking into Sora's and effecting him. 3D's also the first time he's ever got to go on a journey where everything (so he thought, anyway) was perfectly alright, so you can tell Sora's really enjoying himself more and having fun during his test in it.

As for why he fell into Xemnas' trap and all that, they were in the Realm of Sleep. Maybe Sora thought they weren't real, and that he wasn't in any true danger?

It also would never be like him to ignore anyone hurting (such was his character development in KH1, when he originally didn't care about the saving the worlds thing so much, but just Riku and Kairi), so that's why he chased after the dreams.

For KHII... some of the writing is inexcusable to me (like Sora forgetting they're supposed to board the train right after he's told it), but there are also some golden moments full of personality (like when he wanted to possibly knock Scar off the throne to become the Pridelands' next king, maybe) that DDD kind of lost, as they almost made him too saint-like.

Just keep in mind that in KHII, you can tell that Sora is actually faking his happiness a lot. Such as with this line, "Right. We're always just passing through. I wonder when we'll see home again... Just kidding you!" Sora was most definitely not kidding there.

I know I said something like this in a different thread but I don't think Sora is becoming more stupid just a little more naive. Like in Kingdom Hearts 2 he is more naive in more parts than he is serious (such as almost anything with the Organization he is super serious and seems to get more serious in the second half of the game after your second visit to Hallow Bastion).  Dream Drop Distance he is more naive then he was in 2 because he even said it to Yen Sid that he doesn't need to go through the Mark of Mastery because he's already proved himself in his eyes by saving the worlds twice and he seems to only go through the test just for the heck of it and doesn't seem to think that he is in any real danger until it is to late when he shows up in The World That Never Was, but when he gets rescued (but lord oh lord that tea party scene) he seems to grow a little bit when he doesn't become a master, I don't know it just seems that way when he goes back to the Realm of Sleep the tone of his voice just sounds like he's a little hurt, though he is really good at not showing it.  I hope for a not as naive and gullible Sora that we have been seeing lately in the Kingdom Hearts game but I don't want him to loss that side of him as well.

I think in KH2 a lot of Sora's seriousness was actually due to Roxas not being fully merged with him, so he wasn't really himself. I think in 3D they tried to make him more like he was in the first game, but went too far, it had been a decade after all. Though maybe AnHeiressofaSOLDIER has a point and Ven being more awake was exerting some kind of influence on Sora's personality.Personally, in KH3 I want him to still be cheerful and naive but in a more mature way and maybe have some moments of vulnerability showing that, even as hard as he tries to stay upbeat, all that "hurt" he carries from Ven, Xion and Roxas is getting to him, not like in 3D where it was orchestrated by an outside force, but entirely from within. As long as he doesn't go full on emo like KH2 Riku, KH2 Roxas and Ven near the end of BbS. I think having some moments of genuine sorrow where his facade brakes down would really help humanize him. I feel like he's getting farther away from an audience stand in like he was meant to be, keeping all this pain with no ill effects and now supposedly being a Master in KH3

I wouldn't want him to mature too much... I Have a feeling KH3 is going to be a dark game...

I think by mature he means character development not him getting older

Cuz Sora has been severely lacking in character development

this is very true... I believe Roxas has had the most character development so far and he's a Nobody for crying out loud!

Change of writers.

That too, Sora96. That too:) Gosh... how I wish we could someday get all the writers who worked on KH1 to come back, but I know it'll never happen, sadly.

Though to be fair, I do think (for the most part) Sora's characterization has mostly gotten better since the bit of a mishap that was II.

Yep!=) I DO believe that Ven might have been awake inside of Sora somewhat in DDD, Isamu_Kuno (I also heavily agree with your take on Roxas' consciousness resisting Sora's own in II and that causing some of that weirdness there).

I mean, we see him smiling in seeing Sora go back to meet his Dream Eaters at the end--so that alone seems to hint he's waking up--but the way that Sora acts innocent, curious, and easily excitable in DDD seems to speak more of Ven than Sora. Sora's "Whoa there! That is so unfriendly!" line even reads kind of like Ven's "That's not nice. Treating me like some kind of thief."

Anyway, TheKingdomkid, I wouldn't worry about Sora too much in KHIII. I do think that Nomura's going to try and expand on all of Sora's been through and how it's effected him some. Tbh, this series will never delve into the trauma some of these characters have been through that it probably should (and doesn't even need to be darker or more mature to do so, just look no further than how Rick Riordan handed Percy and Annabeth's PTSD in The Heroes of Olympus series), but if nothing else... I don't think he's going to have Sora be perfect with no issues anymore. Especially since someone on Tumblr giffed that scene of him smiling at the end of Dream Drop Distance (before the credits), and it became pretty evident that he's faking that smile so hard, as his eyes are really shifty then. So that definitely makes it seem to me that Nomura probably has something planned.
