Turn-based\Active-Time Battle systems in RPGs ARE NOT BAD

I dont have anything againts turn base and i think the statement of them being bad nowadays is bs, but i also find bs the mentallity of turn base having more depth and strategy over the supposely lack of thinking & strategy in action oriented gameplay.

That can be also redirected to shooters and other genres, each project and title mix things up or add variety to the spectrum of Media

Maybe they feel that tweaking is not enough to get away from repetition and drastic changes are more appealing to them.

There is some strategy is action RPGs but definitly not as much as turn based RPGs.A lot of time in ARPGs(at least from those I've played) you can beat most of the game simply by mashing any attack commands,dodging and healing a couple times,but in turn based RPGs you're always planning ahead considering all sorts of senarios if you were to use this spell instead of this one.

I really like turn based battle systems like Persona, Pokemon, and Bravely Default. I've always found them to be fun. Sure they can get boring if I play a bunch of long turn-based games back to back, but I just mix it up with something different.

 

I must admit, though, I've never found any ATB battle system to be fun. I've tried Xenoblade, FF12, & FF13, and got bored. Pretty much anything with an auto-attack mechanic just turns me off. Either give me pure turn based or pure action, this weird in between combat isn't for me...

 

That's not to say that I think ATB is objectively terrible, it just isn't for me.

Xenoblade and those other games aren't actually ATB, that's a different combat system (I've never played FFXIII, but the other two are more MMO inspired, although I personally feel that Xenoblade did a far better job at that type of gameplay style than FFXII did). ATB is what games like Final Fantasy IV-IX and Chrono Trigger are, where it's still turn-based but your turns are played at the same time as the enemy's.

 

On the whole subject of auto-attacks, I'm not a fan either, but I think it's a lot better when there's something more to it. For example, with Xenoblade, the auto-attacks were used as a way to sort of free up the player so they could focus more on positioning and using Arts. It felt like that helped to open it up to a lot more strategy, and I loved it for that. Not saying you're wrong or anything, just giving my own thoughts, mostly since it's a topic I think about often but don't get a chance to talk about. xD

I don't think all action RPGs have no strategy, but to be honest, the only ones I can think of that had a strategy element to them were Kingdom Hearts I and Chain of Memories. It's more of a fast-paced, instant action type of gameplay style, while turn-based is more focused on making a player think ahead and plan out a lot more. If more Action RPGs had gameplay similar to the Monster Hunter series (Which I could potentially count in as an ARPG, but I feel like MH is sort of in its own subgenre), I'd have a lot more fun with action RPGs than I do now.

I don't think anyone's saying that.  Jim and others are saying, instead, that there's room for both turn-based and action-based Japanese RPGs.  The existence of both Bravely Default, Persona, and SMT and Kingdom Hearts, and the newer Final Fantasy games prove this I feel.  These games tend to sell around 500 thousand anyways, regardless of playstyle.

Like others have said, I have nothing against turn based combat, I LOVED FFX and I'm enjoying FF7. However, I do prefer action RPGs more. I'm excited to see how powerful FF7 will look with more action based combat.

Hm, I've heard so many people say that they hate turn-based rpgs that I started thinking that I was the only one left that liked them. After reading the comments here though, I'm glad that there are still plenty of people that like this genre. :)

I think the issue is that a lot of gamers these days just aren't patient enough, and need something flashy and fast. Personally, I never got the complaints about turn-based. It's a little slower, yes, but it makes you think about your next move a lot more than any Action RPG does. ARPGs are fine too, but most of them are missing that strategy element that I find to be so fun. I'm getting to a point where I'm kind of burned out on Action RPGs because a lot of them feel similar and don't make me plan out my attacks as much as turn-based RPGs do. Turn-based games feel like they have a lot more depth to them, and that's why I love them. Balancing my team, choosing the right skills and spells, and racing against the clock in an ATB-style game is a lot of fun, and I've missed having so many options in that genre. Thankfully, Dragon Quest is still carrying on that legacy with XI, so I'm really excited for that.

Wow, you took the words right out of my mouth. Yeah, I prefer turn-based and ATB-style because you have to plan your attacks accordingly, while in most action rpgs I've played, its all about how quickly you can mash buttons. Not only that, but its so easy to run away from battles in action rpgs, that it takes some of the tension away. Now, don't get me wrong, there are still many action rpgs that I love (Kingdom Hearts and Star Ocean 4 for example) but at the end of the day I'll take a turn-based rpg over an action one.I'm also super excited for Dragon Quest XI! I just hope it gets released out in the West.

Oh... I didn't know that. I thought they were all under the same category. Sorry about that! I'll have to remember when talking about this in the future. I guess it's MMO inspired systems that I don't like.

Yeah, I can appreciate that Xenoblade definitely opens up further into the game. The style of combat just isn't for me, but I won't tell other people they're dumb for liking it or anything. To be honest, I'm not even sure why I can enjoy turn based games and yet get bored by this style of combat. o_o
