Ah, my first gaming memories were of that console. Mario RPG, specifically. Ah, good times...

I admittedly didn't have many good games when I first got it, but I've more than made up for that through Virtual Console and ports/remakes. EarthBound's my second favorite game of all time, in fact!

Also, can't believe I managed to forget Chrono Trigger in that lineup! Dragon Quest also had a few games on the system.

Damn, I can't believe this system is 25 years old!  It's hard to believe that it was so long ago, and yet, games as a medium are still relatively young!  To appreciate gaming's present and future, one must honor its past, ya know?  I never had this system, but I heard great things about it! :D

It was definitely a fantastic system! A lot of its old games are available now through Virtual Console on the Wii and Wii U, so if you have either one of those systems and want to look back on the SNES' fantastic library, that would be a great way to do so! Most of its best games are available on those systems (The Wii U having the best options, since all of the SNES classics that it didn't get are still playable through the Wii Menu that's included on the system). There have also been various remakes and ports of some of its fantastic games, too.

Okay. I wasn't alive during that era but I'm sure some people here feel really old now.

Well I wouldn't say "alive" more like "didn't exist" back than. But still, I'm on the same boat as you. But I did get to lay the SNES at a hospital that one time when I was sick. I was playing Super Mario World.

Yep. V & VI were developed for the Super Famicom while I, II & III were ported to it. They also had the first Mystery Dungeon game.

Bahamut Lagoon is where it's at people.

It's a few years before my time, but the SNES was still one of the most important consoles in shaping who I am as a gamer, so I'm still really excited about this.

I thought that V and VI were the SNES Dragon Quest games, I just wasn't 100% sure. Didn't know about the ports for I-III though.

When did you think they upped the graphics for them? Haha.

I've never seen the versions with improved graphics. I only knew of the NES, GameBoy, and mobile versions, and I've only seen pictures of the NES/GB games.

Ah. Well for the 25th anniversary they did a Wii bundle containing the NES & SNES versions of I-III and then the iOS & Android versions are ports of the SNES versions.

I always figured that the Wii bundle was just the NES versions, I didn't know that the SNES ones were included too. I also figured that the iOS/Android versions would have been remastered like the Final Fantasy mobile games.

For those unaware of the Super Famicom's (Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES, outside Japan) legacy, this is the console that gave us fantastic games such as Yoshi's Island, EarthBound, Final Fantasy IV-VI, Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, F-Zero, and many more! My dad's old SNES was my very first console, and it remains one of my all-time favorites. Anyone else have fond memories of the SNES?

Bruh how dare you not mention Donkey kong country trilogy O_O Then again the list was kinda long already so i guess it can be forgiven ;D  Ah good ol SNES <3 I keep coming back to its games year after year cause theyre just that good :P Happy 25th anniversary i say! *Proceeds to dig his old SNES out of the closet* Cause these things STILL work after years. Why cant most new consoles be like the old ones ;__;

Such a great system! I was super late to the SNES party. It was only a few years ago that my brother managed to purchase one from some guy down the street from us. It was a steal of a price too.

Oddly enough I didn't even get the chance to play my favourite games from the system on the actual SNES itself.

  • I played Final Fantasy IV for the first time on the DS. Brilliant game though I heard the DS version was actually harder than the SNES one... Not sure how true that is though!
  • One of my favourite games, Final Fantasy VI, I played the GBA version and subsequently own the PlayStation version of it.
  • Earthbound never released here in Europe until it dropped on the Wii U Virtual Console in 2013! Haha, shame really cause it is outstanding!
  • Secret of Mana was another game I missed out for the SNES system itself. I played the Wii VC version and later the version on Android (which is horrible).
  • Super Metroid was something I didn't get to play until I got it on the Wii U VC. An absolute gem that's for sure.

We had a number of good games on cartridge like Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World and Street Fighter II though. I really enjoyed those :D

Yes, the full remake is harder but for the HD remaster they added a lower difficulty setting.

To be honest, I still have to play the DKC trilogy. It's definitely up towards the top of SNES games I still need to play, and all three are on the Wii U now, so I'm hoping I can get them soon!

I only had Pilotwings and various movie tie-ins on my SNES. All of my favorite games on the system were found through Virtual Console or remakes of SNES games. Still love the system, though, and I do kind of want to find the cartridges for some of the games that I really liked, though.
