They could be wanting to share information on those titles. Plus I remember last time at E3 Playtonic Games promoted Nintendo's direct and nothing happened with Playtonic in the direct. I have no idea who or what "Playtonic" is, but considering this is one of the top developers for the series speaking, it's not exactly a crazy assumption to make (especially if Corocoro's recent promotions are anything to go by). If this really does end up being Pokemon Z, I'll be perfectly content with whatever the 3DS' lineup is next year. Since GameFreak took a break this year, I've been waiting for a new Pokemon game! Most interesting.... What could it be? (Also, is this separate from the usual DS/3DS Titles?) If it's a main series Pokemon game, it's going to be on the 3DS.
