I'd like to ask...does aqua meet Ansem the Wise before or after the events of the secret episode in Birth by Sleep Final Mix?

Well let's see:

  • Aqua comes across the Castle of Dreams in the RoD.  This is most likely during the events of KH when some worlds were falling to darkness.
  • Aqua's meeting with Ansem the Wise has to be sometime after the tail end of KHII because we know Ansem was sent to the RoD when the machine exploded.  At least we think that's how it happened.

Therefore, it's safe to say the Aqua's meeting with Ansem the Wise happened after the secret episode.

At least a year after the Kingdom Hearts Encoder exploded in Kingdom Hearts II.

The time when A Fragmentary Passage (Secret Episode) occurs is probably immediately after Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep just like how Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage- intends to be.

It then leads to around the time when the worlds fell into darkness the first time which is during Kingdom Hearts as shown by the fallen Castle of Dreams in the Realm of Darkness.

KH0.2, on the other hand, leads to Kingdom Hearts III.

There are currently many questions about the events in the Realm of Darkness throughout the entire period. Mickey went into the Realm of Darkness to obtain the Kingdom Key D and exactly how he got there is still unknown. What else happened there? Did he meet Aqua?

It is implied that Aqua did not meet Ansem the Wise when he was banished there by his former apprentices. He was writing his reports there before gaining the power of darkness to escape. He had also been to the Dark Margin as stated in Blank Points. It seems that the Realm of Darkness is quite large enough for the two not to meet each other.

It also seems that Ansem the Wise did not immediately land in the Dark Margin after his machine exploded since Sora and Riku were also sent there at the end of KHII and both Ansem the Wise and Aqua were nowhere to be seen. He must've landed somewhere else first before going to the Dark Margin and later found by Aqua at least a year later, as stated by him based on the time flow in the Realm of Darkness. (The flow of time in the Realm of Darkness is different.)

Will all these be answered in KH0.2, or just partly, and to be continued in KHIII? Curious.

At least a year after the Kingdom Hearts Encoder exploded in Kingdom Hearts II.

It's actually right after Kingdom Hearts II.

  • At one point in 'KHII’, Ansem the Wise escapes from the Realm of Darkness. This time he has once again descended into the Realm of Darkness. At what point in time does this happen?

After 'KHII’. When he stopped the Organization’s plans in 'KHII’, he was caught up in an explosion and blown into the Realm of Darkness. The line where he says, “How long has it been since I met him? At least a year now, perhaps more…” is referring to before 'he’ went to sleep–that is, it’s referring to the time of 'Chain of Memories’. It doesn’t mean this is one year after 'KHII’.

  • At that point, it seems like Aqua has been lost for a long time.

Yes. From when she comes to the Realm of Darkness to when she meets Ansem the Wise, over 10 years have passed in the outside world. The flow of time is different in the Realm of Darkness and the outside world, so it doesn’t feel like 10 years have passed. But there’s no mistaking that she’s been in the Realm of Darkness for quite a long time.

Ansem the Wise comes across Aqua after KH2. He even tells her this is his second time upon those shores. ( First time being when he was cast there by the apprentices) He also tells her of the worlds almost falling to darkness more than once " Sad to say they nearly fell to darkness more than once but at every turn that boy arrived with keyblade at hand to save the day"

Will all these be answered in KH0.2, or just partly, and to be continued in KHIII? Curious.

The place that Sora and Riku were at during the ending of Kingdom Hearts II is different from the one that Aqua and Ansem the Wise. There are two different shores on the dark margin. The Dark Margin has two shores one side lies on the Inbetween Realm and one side lies within the Realm of Darkness. Ansem and Aqua were on the shore within the Realm of Darkness while Sora and Riku were on the Realm Inbetween shore.

After the events. In fact, that scene takes place some time after Kingdom Hearts II, before Dream Drop Distance. So between the secret episode and that scene with Ansem, Aqua has spent about 10 years (Realm of Light time) in the Realm of Darkness. So everything that happens in 0.2 has already happened by that point in time.

It's actually right after Kingdom Hearts II.

Ansem the Wise: "How long has it been since I met him? At least a year now, perhaps more..."

The last time Ansem the Wise and Sora met each other was when his machine exploded. It's been at least a year Ansem spent his time in the Realm of Darkness before Aqua found him in the Dark Margin. The flow of time is different there though so the actual time passed in the Realm of Light and the Realm Between is unknown.

There is only a side of the shore shown in the Dark Margin so far. In all the cutscenes the Dark Margin is shown, the setting and background of the place are the exact same.

  • Another Side, Another Story [deep dive] (Roxas speaking with Xemnas in the secret ending of KHFM)
  • Dreams Connected (Roxas speaking with Xemnas at the opening of KHII)
  • A Letter (Sora and Riku arriving at the Dark Margin at the end of KHII)
  • Day 27 — The Dark Margin (Roxas speaking with Xemnas in KHD)
  • Blank Points (Aqua meeting Ansem the Wise in the secret ending of KHBbS)

Every time the Dark Margin appear in the cutscenes, its setting and background is the same, especially the bright moon near the horizon. Yes, it's true that the Dark Margin is between Darkness and Between but only a side of the shore was shown so far.

In the Director's Secret Report XIII, Nomura said that Sora and Riku were looking at an ocean in the Realm of Darkness from a beach in the Realm Between.

In Secret Ansem's Report 3, Ansem the Wise states that he was "banished to a hollow realm of nothingness."

In Blank Points, Ansem the Wise said "this is my second time on these shores."

Sora and Riku walked from the Realm Between and ended up at the Dark Margin, which is the boundary between Darkness and Between. Ansem the Wise was banished and ended up at a place he called the "realm of nothingness" (the Realm Between but much closer to the Realm of Darkness, hence he obtained the power of darkness, thus it's somewhere between Between and Darkness) and he's been to the "shores" (the Dark Margin) a total of two times after his machine exploded. The same exact place.

In the Director's Secret Report XIII again, Nomura stated that the Dark Margin is not strictly part of the Realm of Darkness.

The Dark Margin is both part of the Realm Between and part of the Realm of Darkness. This also explains why Aqua is able to go there even though she's stuck in the Realm of Darkness. Nevertheless, one cannot escape anywhere in the Realm of Darkness (including the Dark Margin) unless one uses the Corridors of Darkness or summons the Door to Light somehow.

Now, we still need answers on what happened to Ansem the Wise after his machine exploded, before meeting with Aqua in the Dark Margin at least a year later (Realm of Darkness time), as Sora and Riku did not see him in the Dark Margin.

Speaking of which, what is that bright moon in the distant of the Dark Margin? Kingdom Hearts? Or something else? I hope this'll be explained in either KH0.2 or KHIII.

Oh yeah, where was it stated that the time flow in the Realm of Darkness is different? I forgot where I knew about it.

Did you not read my post there is an interview in there confirming it was after KHII. To argue that a year has past after KH II is silly considering a year has not even past in the Realm of Light between the end of KHII and the end of DDD.

That interview confirms that exact opposite of what you're trying to say. It acts as the edge between the Realm of Darkness and the Realm Inbetween. It serves as the literal edge of a world. Sora and Riku were on the side of the Realm Inbetween where they had just come from Aqua however was in the Realm of Darkness which is the shoreside she and Ansem were on. This beaches were similar but they definitely were not identical. Also Roxas was never really on the Dark Margin that was a dream.

When they say "leads to KH3" they're likely talking about particular plot details and such. It's still before she meets Ansem because it's right after she sees the Castle of Dreams in Darkness. Maybe if it continues from the scene where she meets Ansem it connects to KH3 in a linear manner like you said, but I kind of doubt that, as we see in the end of Dream Drop Distance that she's just patiently waiting at the Dark Margin by the time KH3 is nearing in the timeline. So it's not literally going to follow the story and then just end 5 minutes before KH3 starts like how Days led directly to KH2, but the events that happen will be heavily connected to what's going on. Plus, all of this is a story being told from Mickey's perspective while Sora is away doing god knows what before KH3 can happen, so no matter what the context will have to be between BbS and KH1's ending, as far as Mickey's narration goes.

Nomura literally says exactly when this happened and clarifies this point.  Nomura's exact words :

After 'KHII’. When he stopped the Organization’s plans in 'KHII’, he was caught up in an explosion and blown into the Realm of Darkness. The line where he says, “How long has it been since I met him? At least a year now, perhaps more…” is referring to before 'he’ went to sleep–that is, it’s referring to the time of 'Chain of Memories’. It doesn’t mean this is one year after 'KHII’.

There is only a side of the shore shown in the Dark Margin so far. In all the cutscenes the Dark Margin is shown, the setting and background of the place are the exact same.

Roxas was never in the RoD. The scenes you are talking about are a dream. Once again Nomura himself :

Roxas asked for Xemnas’ name so does that mean that scene shows him meeting Xemnas for the first time and that’s when he joined the Organization?

Nomura: Not really. It’s true that he had a conversation with Xemnas at that beach before but that’s not their first meeting and their conversation wasn’t like that either. The conversation at the beginning of the game was Roxas’ dream, mixed with his memories and feelings. The part where he asked for Xemnas’ name but instead was asked back for his real name was a reflection of Roxas’ feelings on who really is. Roxas didn’t know his real name, remember? If he remembered that he was Sora, I think he wouldn’t join the Organization in the first place.

Now, we still need answers on what happened to Ansem the Wise after his machine exploded, before meeting with Aqua in the Dark Margin at least a year later (Realm of Darkness time), as Sora and Riku did not see him in the Dark Margin.

The second time around he was not in the exact same place. Just because he says he was on these shores twice does not mean he was in the same exact place. Regardless it's irrelevant to the answer of when this happened.

16: What happened to Ansem the Wise?

He is left wandering in the Realm of Darkness.

Ansem the Wise, who had been banished to the Realm of Nothingness by his six
apprentices, in KHII, wanted to release the Kingdom Hearts made from
people’s hearts that the Nobodies of his apprentices had made. The
machine that he used for that ended up exploding, taking him with it. It
looked as though he died, but we know from the secret event in
BbS that he was sent into the Realm of Darkness. Ansem tried to encode the heart’s form into data with his machine, but it didn’t go as planned and the machine went berserk. Ansem the Wise was thrust into the Realm of Darkness, forgetting all of his memories except those concerning Sora.

What can be called the dark coastline seen at the beginning and end of KHII is the tip of a world. It is not strictly part of the realm of darkness but rather what serves as the boundary line in between the dark and the in-between. In the ending, Sora and Riku were on the coast on the in-between side and were looking at the sea of the realm of darkness. The door visible in the dark sea is a scene that symbolizes "Deep within the darkness, there is light", as Sora said in the previous KH.

Actually, KH0.2 leads to KHIII, not just after KHII. Though Aqua meeting Ansem is probably near the beginning of KHIII. We still don't know how the flow of time in the Realm of Darkness works. Faster, or slower than the time flow in the Realm of Light and the Realm Between? And how fast or how slow? There may be some other events happening right after that. Who knows?

0.2 takes place right after BBS. Nomura said the story behind this time will be shown in 0.2 and later finished in KH3 but that does not mean it leads into KH3. It means the rest of what happened during that time will be shown prolly via flashbacks like in DDD. The flow of time in the realm of darkness is slower not faster or Aqua would have aged tremendously..

Oh yeah, where was it stated that the time flow in the Realm of Darkness is different? I forgot where I knew about it.

[*]At that point, it seems like Aqua has been lost for a long time.

Yes. From when she comes to the Realm of Darkness to when she meets Ansem the Wise, over 10 years have passed in the outside world. Are you reading these interviews that are posted that actually say word for word  and point out direct answers to the given questions by Nomura himself?

Because Nomura tells you all the answers including that it has not been a year from KH2 but :The line where he says, “How long has it been since I met him? At least a year now, perhaps more…” is referring to before 'he’ went to sleep–that is, it’s referring to the time of 'Chain of Memories’. It doesn’t mean this is one year after 'KHII’.

I see, I see. My apologies. I didn't know those were from the interviews and I didn't read many of the interviews especially the older ones.

However, I'm still not convinced that Sora and Riku were at the opposite shore as Aqua and Ansem. I know the Dark Margin is the boundary line between the Realm of Darkness and the Realm Between but I don't think there are two sides of shores shown. Did Nomura mention about this?

Yes, I know, in the Director's Secret Report XIII, Nomura said Sora and Riku were on the coast on the in-between side and were looking at the sea of the realm of darkness. But did he really mean that there are two sides of coasts of the Dark Margin?

In both A Letter and Blank Points, the Dark Margin shown in those cutscenes have the exact same rock pattern stretching over the ocean but there may be a small difference on the rocks on the beaches, i.e. Ansem sitting on a rock while the scene of Sora and Riku does not have the rock (but the dream of Roxas does have the rock which Xemnas was sitting on).

If there really are two sides of the Dark Margin (one at the side of the Realm Between and one at the side of the Realm of Darkness), how does that explain the bright moon near the horizon in both the cutscenes?

Ansem also stated that he was banished to a hollow realm of nothingness, which should not mean directly in the Realm of Darkness.

Though the weird part is that Sora and Riku didn't meet Aqua and Ansem right after Ansem's machine exploded.

In Another Guardian of Light, Aqua seems to be alone in the Dark Margin. In this cutscene, the rock pattern is also the same but there's limited view on the beach to make out for the rocks there so I can't make a conclusion on that.

By the way, I was wondering how Roxas can dream of a place like the Dark Margin if neither he, Ventus nor Sora had been to the place by the time Sora slept. Unless Roxas'd been to the place before but was never shown?

The bright moon in the Dark Margin is a mystery. It doesn't look like Kingdom Hearts and there shouldn't be any light in the Realm of Darkness except for Kingdom Hearts, which is the ultimate light, and the Door to Light.

Once again it states this in the interview. Riku and Sora were on the inbetween side ( they just came from the inbetween realm) whereas Ansem and Aqua are in the RoD. Why do you think they did not meet each other?

What can be called the dark coastline seen at the beginning and end of KHII is the tip of a world. Ansem also stated that he was banished to a hollow realm of nothingness, which should not mean directly in the Realm of Darkness.

It's a video game.  It's already been confirmed it's two different shores.

Though the weird part is that Sora and Riku didn't meet Aqua and Ansem right after Ansem's machine exploded.

It's not like he would know, as far as he knew they could be the exact same realm after all they do look similar to the point that even Nomura had point out to people the differences so they would not get confused. On top of that he was referring to his first time there not his second.  As for the second time he was there it was said by Nomura himself it was the RoD that's how he met Aqua. We know for a fact both Aqua and AtW are trapped in the realm of darkness.  In other words they both were in the RoD. Nomura's words once again :The
machine that he used for that ended up exploding, taking him with it. It
looked as though he died, but we know from the secret event in
BbS that he was sent into the Realm of Darkness...

In Another Guardian of Light, Aqua seems to be alone in the Dark Margin. In this cutscene, the rock pattern is also the same but there's limited view on the beach to make out for the rocks there so I can't make a conclusion on that.

It's just how Nomura designed it. It's just level design. I think you are looking way too hard into it. Especially when Nomura has specified certain things.  As for the dreams ask Nomura plus remember that's Roxas subconscious questioning who he was and his existence basically. It's symbolic and that's the point.

At the end of the day none of this actually matters since it has nothing to do with when this happened so we should not derail this thread.

I see. So, it's possible that Ansem ended up at the Between side of the Dark Margin on the first time and confirmed to be at the Dark Margin within the RoD on the second time.

I think it's possible that his Kingdom Hearts Encoder was the reason that he went closer to the RoD than the first time (since he was in the Realm Between before it exploded and was supposed to end up at the Between side of the Dark Margin) and the failure to encode the artificial Kingdom Hearts caused the explosion that brought him closer to the actual Kingdom Hearts (which is deep within the RoD) and somehow purified Riku of Ansem(SoD)'s darkness (probably due to Kingdom Hearts being the ultimate light?).

I wonder what happened to Ansem after meeting Aqua as I've stated in my last post, Aqua was alone in the Dark Margin in the secret ending of KH3D.

Alright, thanks. I apologize again for derailing the thread since the question asked by the thread-starter fill my mind with questions regarding the Dark Margin.

He was in the RoD the second time around as stated by Nomura. As for the encoder even AtW said he had no idea where he would end up or what would happen. As for derailing it's ok we all do it at times while explaining things.

That's exactly what what happened. The first time he was banished to the In between Realm the second time he was blasted to the Realm of Darkness.

It had less to do with the Kingdom Hearts and more to do with the heart being an incalculable power. One cannot go near Kingdom Hearts because it swallowed by the darkness and can only be summoned by the X-blade. Ansem once again tried calculate and control the heart and the heart defied him. True, he did say "I do not claim to know the outcome of this venture, either. After all... Hearts are unpredictable." and "It's going to self-destruct, and anything could happen!"

And about the summoning of Kingdom Hearts. Xehanort summoned it by turning his Keyblade into an orb and shot it into the clouds even before the χ-blade was created. I suppose it's related to his Keyblade being the most ancient one?
