How does this work if no official release date has been announced?

Only kinda dumb question. Since there is no official release date these sites use a placeholder date for their system. I believe Amazon currently says the game is set to ship on December 31st 2015. Later they will change it to December 31st 2016. This pattern will continue until a real date is released. You can actually go and pre-order the game right now, but I would just wait until it is official.

When it comes to Kingdom Hearts news your safest bet it to only trust what you read on KH13 or KHInsider. Anything else on the internet (even from game news websites) is not to be trusted.

It's something that's only been done in recent years because video games have come more into pop culture and they try to get people to pre-order because of the hype, basically...

 

It's something that I really wish would stop because I'm tired of people thinking placeholder dates are the real release dates.

This is nothing new, but yes, we've noticed. Please for the love of God do not say that these sites also mention the release date is the 31st December 2015.

It's been available since it was first announced.  I hope they back up the order information.  It would stink if there was a glitch or something and all the data got erased.

A quick hint is to check the day of the week it is releasing. Video games ALWAYS release on Tuesday, unless it is a Nintendo exclusive. In that case, it will release on a Friday. This year, December 31st is a Thursday. Also, December 31st is almost ALWAYS guaranteed to be a placeholder date.

 

I promise, if there was an official announcement for the release date, you would know about it

Like people have said the dates right now are placeholders until the actual release date is announced. If you pre-order on amazon/bestbuy before a release date is announced, they will have your pre-order in the system and will ship the game to you once it comes out. They also send you an email giving you an update if a release date is announced
