Go Death Note. Don't bother with One Piece, it's over 600 episodes long. Take my advice and stick to the shorter series.

Also, you could go to DBZ, but it's not actually that great. Lot of filler. Go DBZ kai if you really want to watch it.

Could you explain what makes Death Note good without spoiling too much?

Kind of hard to explain. It's sort of a class between minds as the second main character tries to discover who the killer (the main character) is. It's fun to watch how those two characters figure out one another and sort of beat each other back. That was probably a poor explanation, but it's good. Watch it.

Baccano is pretty good, that's a must watch in dub since it's set in America. Psycho-Pass, Steins;Gate, Persona 4 the animation, and The Devil is a Part-Timer are some of my favorites.

If you're looking for anything else, check my anime list http://myanimelist.net/animelist/KarmaCharger5 there's a lot there to wade through, though.

If you haven't yet, check out Sword Art Online or Danganronpa. Sword Art Online started in 2012 so it's slightly new. It's about 10,000 people trapped in a virtual reality game called Sword Art Online and the only way out is to beat the boss on the 100th floor. Also, if the players die in the game they can actually die in real life. It's my favorite anime and they're still making a new season. Danganronpa is basically this murder mystery anime. It's about these 15 high school students that are trapped inside this school called Hope's Peak Academy and are forced to live there forever. The only way for someone to leave is that they have to kill someone and not get caught. If the culprit is caught, then he or she will be executed. To be honest I am not really into an anime that's this dark, but I kept watching because there were so many plot twists.

If you like a pure "fight" anime, watch DBZ. It's actually all about fighting (I liked it though).

It's actually over 700 episodes long, but you're right. I would watch One Piece at the end, because it's so long.

I was watching an anime reviewer called Double4Anime and he called One Piece one of the greatest works of literature ever. That made me interested.

Well, if you look at my avatar and my member title, you can tell I'm a big One Piece fan. Great fights, exciting story, and cool, unique characters.

Pandora Hearts in manga only: Oz Vessalius gets thrown into a hell like place called the Abyss just because his sin was his very being. He meets a girl named Alice the B-Rabbit, who is his only hope to get out of there and find out why his sin is his very being. LOTS of plot twisting, don't watch the anime unless if it's for the music, the plot is inaccurate after a while.

Assassination Classroom: A strange octopus alien destroys over 75% of the moon, threatens to destroy the world at the end of the school year and teaches a class that has to kill him before that time comes. It's verrry funny.

Cowboy Bebop: A group of bounty hunters go off in the galaxy trying to make a living while also encountering some very interesting things. It's the star wars of anime and it has one of the best soundtracks ever! If you still aren't sure of checking this out, watch either the fight scene or the episode Ballad of Fallen Angels.

And finally: Steins;Gate: A self proclaimed mad scientist accidentally time travels into another timeline and he's the only one that notices the difference which makes him try to go back to the original timeline. Like Pandora Hearts, lots of plot twists.

I hope one of these animes/manga will suit your interests ^-^ (just thought of the ones on top of my head)

What kinds of anime are you looking for, exactly?

I may have overspammed this idea, but I'll say it anyways. Watch Digimon. It is a lot better than many people think. Of course, you may need a certain appreciation in order to truly enjoy the anime.

Don't start with Fusion, start from Season 01, then Season 02. If you think you can handle some "Suggestive" themes, you can watch Season 03(Tamers) and Spirit Evolution, but I personally don't reccomend it. Then, watch Data Squad, then finally watch Digimon Fusion. This is the best order to watch this by. And there are plenty of movies to go with the series as well, and as far as I know, the movies are canon.

What's it about?

D.Gray-man follows the adventures of 15-year-old Allen Walker, whose left arm can transform into a monstrous claw/sword and destroy Akuma (Japanese for 'demon'), evolving machines created by the Millennium Earl to help him destroy humanity. As ordered by his master, General Cross Marian, Allen becomes an Exorcist, one of the people who can destroy Akuma for the Black Order, an organization attempting to stop the Earl. With his left eye, Allen can detect disguised Akuma, making him a powerful asset for the Order. He is sent to recover pieces of Innocence, a substance giving the Exorcists the ability to destroy Akuma. The Earl decides to call together the Noah Family, superhuman descendants of Noah, who can destroy Innocence. Both sides start the search for the Heart, the most powerful piece of Innocence, which will ensure victory for the side that finds it.

I watched half of the first episode and I didn't really like it, but I'm willing to give it another go! I've never liked the theme of pirates but I'll give it a shot.

The first episodes aren't that good, it gets much better. For the pirate part: they're no typical pirates, most of the story is playing on islands, they don't look like pirates and are definitely not fighting like ones.

Just a short summary of the plot: Monkey D. Luffy has the dream to become the Pirate King. The one who will find the treasure One Piece. His idol is the pirate Shanks, who gave him the straw hat, and he promised him to become a great pirate. With 17 he starts his journey, searching for crew members (currently 9) and sailing from island to island, to get stronger. In One Piece there exist so called "Devil Fruits", fruits who give their user a unique ability. Luffy ate the Gum-Gum-Fruit, thus making him a Rubber human, which is quite funny, but still makes him a powerful fighter.

It's actually a really epic anime, at least I think so. If you want to be sure that you like it, watch the first 40 episodes. If you don't like it at that point, I don't think you will later on.

I watched the original series and the whole series after it when they are slightly grown up. I've seen the series where they are like Digimon Police people and I've seen this other series as well, all I remember from that one is a person in a train station.

If you're searching for more current anime, I suggest

  • School-Live! - It's a slice-of-life show. However, there is a major twist at the end of episode one. I STRONGLY recommend you do not read any description, summary, anything about it, until you watch at least the first episode.
  • Food Wars! - An anime that focuses on cooking. I found it to be fairly fun, though it may not be everyone's cup of tea, since it has some large chucks of fanservice.
  • GATE - An anime otaku is chosen to invade and conquer a fantasy world with no technology or society beyond the medieval age. This is a hesitant recommendation, since it's supposed to get better later, but so far, I found it to be a little boring.
