Sega admits betraying fans

Recommended Posts

The CEO and President of SEGA, Hajime Satomi, has admitted in an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu that he feels the company has “betrayed” the trust of their fans with several titles released, and how the focus of the company will now shift to quality releases to “win back the customers’ trust”.

Here is what he said in the interview:

“As far as the Western market goes, we learned a lot from Atlus. If we can make a title with proper quality, I believe there’s a good chance for it to do well even in the West for players that like to play Japanese games.”

“I’ve been talking to the employees about how we should start putting serious consideration into quality from this point on. Especially in North America and Europe, where it’s always been more of a focus on schedules, I believe that if we can’t maintain quality, it would be better to not release anything at all.”

Satomi follows by admitting the company has “partially betrayed” their older fans with select games.

“We did our best to build a relationship of mutual trust with older fans of Sega, but looking back, there’ve been some titles that have partially betrayed that [trust] in the past 10 years.”

Satomi could of course be partially referring the recently Sonic Boom and past bad Sega games like Sonic 06.
It’s not all doom and despair though, as Satomi says there could be a new home console game announced at the Tokyo Game Show 2015, which is in September. Could it be Sonic 25th anniversary title? He responds to Famitsu with a closing statement.

“Since we’re seriously considering quality, I can’t make that promise for the time being, but I believe we will announce something for home console at Tokyo Game Show,”

“Sega in the ‘90s was known for its ‘brand, but after that, we’ve lost trust, and we were left with nothing but reputation. For this reason, we’d like to win back the customers’ trust, and become a ‘brand,’ once again.”

How do you feel about the comments made by SEGA’s CEO? Do you agree with him?

Thank you, SEGA. Finally you see the error of your ways. I can finally forgive you if it really will be about quality this time. I love Sonic, but the games became, kinda weird. (Sonic's current Voice Actor isn't meant for Sonic, we want the old Sonic back.)

If we make good games, people might like them. Great insight, Sega, glad it took you decades to figure that out.

Speak for yourself, I think Roger Craig Smith does a great job as Sonic.

I like how they're apologizing that only NOW do they realize that 'considering quality' is something they should have been doing the whole time. 'Considering quality' wasn't even a thought until recently to them. That does not make me want to buy your games, Sega.

Well, yeah, Roger Craig Smith is a good VA, not saying it's BAD, but I really liked the original from Sonic Adventure 1 and after that.

I'm fine with the current VA, but I personally liked the original more. Nothing more, nothing less. But knowing that that VA hasn't voiced Sonic for a long time, he probably won't anytime soon. Sorry that I said 'we'. I was unsure of what others' opinions were.

Just in my opinion.

THANK YOU LORD!!!!!!!!! I am thrilled by this news! I was a huge fan of Sonic growing up and kind of always like the blue spiked character more than a certain classic plumber, but in recent years I just found myself losing all hope in Sonic as he started to only disappoint me in games I played of him. Now I haven't played Colors or Generations yet, but games like Sonic Boom and Sonic Lost World really started to disappoint me more than anything, and so I was kind of wondering if my Sonic days were at an end, but with this news Sonic may have a chance for a comeback and be as awesome as I remember him! He is fun in Smash, and his comic books and TV shows (including Sonic Boom) are still great, it's just his games that need to be fixed.

But enough about my Sonic thoughts, now I wanted to say that as a company I think this may really help Sega become better, and they can make great games again. They have made a few gems in the more recent years nevertheless (like The Cave), but they really need to start remembering what they once were and become a boss at video games once again! :)

Apology accepted Sega. Now, come over here and let me love you again. <3 It's been too long.

I for one have been waiting for Sega to fnally admit this. I really hope they can pull out all the stops on this new game. Also, I think everyone canagree that there are so many decisions that if were made differently, Sega could still be in the Big 3.

I agree with you. If Sega really tried and made the right decisions they could becoume huge agian. Who knows, maybe if they do REALLY well they'll make a new home console and reclaim their rightful throne as console king. (Yes I know that will probably never happen, but I can dream.)
