hatok 6,413 Posted July 14, 2015 An evil empire (corporation) is draining life energy from espers (mako) and making genetic super soldiers through magitek augmentation (the Jenova Project). The first subject to under magitek augmentation (get infused with Jenova cells) is the game's ultimate villain, Kefka (Spehiroth). Kefka (Sephiroth) becomes a general in Emporer Gestahl's (President Shinra's) army and eventually kills his master. The heroes, the Returners (Avalanche), include a girl with a mysterious mystical background and a former Imperial (Corporate) soldier. Finally, Kefka (Sephiroth) is confronted, turns into an angel-like being and is destroyed by the heroes. Yeah it's REALLY true. Kinda hard to miss. I'm familiar with the comparison but it's a superficial one that only works if you completely ignore details I was talking about the story. Though I don't know what movies you watch if you agree that FF7 is the videogame equivalent of a movie Final Fantasy 7 made a distinct effort to be cinematic. That's why they incorporated so much CG. The advertisements pushed it as a movie, and that's ultimately what they did. Just unlike other games they didn't forget to make it a game, too So it discourages spamming? Good glad we're in agreement. It discourages spamming by being worthless. Why spam a spell that will do less damage and make you weaker, when you can just spam limit breaks, or just use your normal attack for 9999 damage. Claiming FF8's battles have any level of depth or strategy is hilarious Laugh all you want but when you can beat the final boss of your game by using KotR ONCE then yeah to say VII has a more tactical and reserved battle system than VIII is just refusing to accept what you don't want to. Getting Knights of the Round is a huge pain, breaking FF8 is significantly easier. You can start dealing 999 damage reeeaaallly early. FF7 has stategies, sometimes. FF8 has me waiting on the Seifer battle so I can draw spells from him since he poses literally no threat Ah, so you didn't pay attention. Got it. That also explains why you don't see the extreme similarities between VI and VII's plot. I paid enough attention. I played the game really thoroughly, I did all the card stuff, got all the optional scenes. Also, again with the meaningless FF7-FF6 comparison? For someone who claims I don't pay attention, your big comparison is severely lacking in detail Yes, all of that is definitely has everything to do with Sephiroth. ...have you played FF7? Sephiroth isn't the primary antagonist throughout a lot of the game. Shinra is also a thing. A pretty important thing. Or does everyone need a personal vendetta with Sephiroth now? Yeah you definitely payed no attention whatsoever just like any other person who hates VIII simply because it follows after VII without being VII cause Ultimecia was there since disc 1. As for her reasons, they're there, they're just not thrown into your face ad nauseum. That's one of the good things about VIII's writing, they had (clearly misplaced) faith in the intelligence of the player and didn't feel the need to spoon feed you everything. Even IX was cleverer with the way they revealed the villain's motives with Zidane travelling to Terra. But VII went lazy and cliche with a lame flashback. "You just get GET why FF8 is so good. You're just not smart enough to get it" lol, okay yup FF8's plot was just so brilliant that it took a mind such as yours to appreciate its beauty seems legit Ultemecia isn't there until very late, only her influence is. We focus primarily on Edea and Space Witch for the bulk of the game. Though focus is a bad word, since notihng about the plot is in focus, since they decided the primary focus should be Squall and Rinoa's "love" story Ultemecia doesn't have motives. There are just theories. Based only on data in the game, the best we can get is... she wants to destroy stuff. Sure, she might be Rinoa. Maybe. Maybe not. I like how you're comparing disparate plot points. Sephiroth's motives aren't important, we don't need a subtle way of introducing them. Arguing that subtlety is an automatic positive is pretty naive, anyways. Sometimes you just need to show people what you mean. But the purpose of Sephiroth's flashback is to deal with Cloud's memories (you know, just like in FF6) not to establish Sephiroth's deep and meaningful motive
