Kingdom Hearts III trailer analysis: The HUD

KH13 continues to analyze every nook and cranny of any news, photos, and videos of the upcoming Kingdom Hearts III. Today, we delve into the HUD, or heads-up display. It is also equally referred to as a 'status bar'.

 

As we noted before, the classic command menu makes a return from Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. While it doesn't look as artful as Kingdom Hearts II's default style, Kingdom Hearts III is still in development and nothing is truly finalized until it ships.

While the command menu is interesting, the magic and health meters have much to say.

To note, the character profiles show a much more serious Sora, Donald, and Goofy. Could this show us that Kingdom Hearts III is much more serious in tone than the previous numbered titles? It is also fun to note that, when hit, the characters still wince in pain. When Donald and Goofy are hit, their respective meters bobble up and down with a flashing red light accompanying it.

 

Next, if you'll note the 'EX' gauge, it is still unclear what it pertains to, as it at least doesn't deplete when Sora is shown changing his Keyblade into dual guns, or summoning the attraction flows. However, recent images show the gauge's name was changed from 'EX' to 'Focus'.

The reason for the name change, or what that meter reflects, has yet to be discussed by Tetsuya Nomura or anyone working on Kingdom Hearts III.

 

Nothing is written in stone for the HUD, and anything could change between now and Kingdom Hearts III's release. Still, it is fun to speculate. What do you think the Focus gauge triggers in the game? Do you think the more serious profile pictures of Sora, Donald, and Goofy, hint at a more serious game? Please sound off in the comments below!

I think it's like the focus in BBS I believe. Also, since this game is going on a bigger system. I would suppose it would have moving images of Sora, Doanld, and Goofy as you stated in your post.

I find it interesting that these are from the same trailer, and yet while they are the same model, Sora in his KH2 outfit still has his hair as spiky as ever, but once he's in his new sporty look his hair has calmed down quite a bit. I guess his change into this costume does a lot more than change his clothes. Also, it is likely that this HUD is a placeholder, but I wouldn't be surprised if it acts like KH2, where we have the option to switch between this "default" mode and a world changing mode that fits each world or area you're in. I really like how their character icons are animated though, I hope they keep that.  <3

 

Also, maybe it's possible that when you get the new outfit the Ex gauge turns into the Focus gauge.

Yes, it is a placeholder, but that doesn't mean it will all be completely new in the finished version. It could be, but I bet a lot of the elements will remain. Also, it's a very slow time for actual news, so this gives us something to discuss.

Dude, it's still worth a discussion regardless of how often it changes.

 

I personally believe that Donald and Goofy have had it being called "Dolan" and "Gooby" hence their angry faces!  :lol:

Yes it is a slow time for news haha. That is a fair point. I've seen a few trailer analysis videos where they talk about the HUD like it's the current one that they are using in game, that's why I made that comment. They have said things like "Oh wow Sora did a spell and his magic gauge didn't move! I wonder if its a new mechanic?" which are ridiculous, especially since Nomura said that it is just a placeholder, which makes sense because it's not showing any signs of being used.

 

I just hope they bring back the custom layouts depending on the world you are in. That was always one of my favorite parts of the KH2 HUD.

I think the HUD in the trailer is not exactly working. It seems that it's incomplete and is there just to show us a general idea of how the HUD will look like in the game. Like in the D23 2013 trailer, the HUD had moving faces of Sora Donald and Goofy which is missing in this trailer. I guess they haven't implemented that yet after switching to Unreal Engine 4. Also in the trailer, Sora's MP bar never goes down even though it is seen that he uses magic throughout.

I'm guessing the EX/Focus Guage is used for multiple purposes like the trove Guage was in KH2, in this case I thinks it's used for Keyblade Transformations, Attraction Flow, Summons and possibly Drive Forms. I'm guessing the reason it's not draining is because it's a placeholder.

Sora, Donald, and Goofy's HP Bar Picture: I would probably guess when they are not fighting, their faces won't be serious. Sora might have a smile on his face and Donald and Goofy's face will be calm. But when they are fighting (Heartless and a Boss), they would have the serious face. 

 

EX/Focus Gauge:   I was going to say it might have something to do with Sora's new outfit, but I'm not sure on that. Perhaps, the Keyblade Transformation might be it. Summons might use up MP, just like Kingdom Hearts 2. Attraction Flow, I don't really know. Perhaps...

Summons used MP in the first game, in KH2 they used the Drive Gauge.
