Why Kingdom Hearts 3 MUST Have Multiple Playable Characters

Recommended Posts

Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. You have many good reasonings here! And about that last question: It would be cool if they made a final episode where you use all 3 (or 2) save files to face against Xehanort's 13 darknesses. Like each save file (Sora, Riku, Kairi), would team up with the other heroes in team efforts, such as Sora Donald and Goofy team up with Ven (and possibly Roxas), whereas Riku would team up with King Mickey and Terra. Then Kairi would team up with Aqua and (Idk, Lea maybe?) then fight their own battles against the 13 darknesses. Sora would have the most battles (main character), Riku and Kairi would fight equal amounts. Sora would fight 5 and Riku and Kairi would each fight 4.

Sounds great, right? Again, excellent work, Eraqus!

Also, since the PS4 and Xbox One have lots of processing power, they could easily allow the story modes, if there will be multiple, to each be equally large and expansive. But either way, I'd be fine with Sora being the only playable character. As long as I get to see Ventus come back, I will fully enjoy KH3!

I only really have issue with what you're saying about Sora and Xehanort. I mean, MX did trick him into falling into a magic coma and try to posses his body. That seems like a pretty solid reason to wanna fight the guy and stop his evil shenanigans. That's way more reason than either Roxas or Kairi have, anyway.

That doesn't mean there shouldn't be other playable characters, but he will always be the key to everything.

Also very much this. Other characters are main characters too, but Sora is the main character. He's the one guy who's been there from the start. Everything ties back to him, the whole story is a huge spider web of event with him at the very center. There can (and I would say should) be other playable characters, but Sora is the star of the show.

No multiple characters. In each game it has appeared in, it's made the experience almost... shorter. I don't know. I guess because it inevitably makes each character's story shorter. I'd rather have one full, complete, jam packed story rather than multiple small, less fulfilling stories.

I will say that for the final battle, we should switch between characters because it makes a lot of sense, but that's it. No different scenarios unless it's done like with Roxas at the beginning of KH2 in which it's a short segment somewhere within Sora's story (doesn't have to be the beginning).

I have no idea how Square could handle it properly.

The BBS or 3D way is surely not an option.

Maybe we'll have to play with Sora first through the game and there will be New Game+ with other characters (like in CoM).

The story could also follow a strong line where we can not choose who we play but it switches regularly (after each world) between Sora, Donald, Goofy / Riku, Mickey / Kairi, Lea. Other characters would join the party later (this would also mean that the classic group with only three men not longer exists).

One of the main themes in this saga is friendship. Sora's friends being firetrucked with alone makes this personal for Sora. But let's keep this real: DDD alone is enough reason for Sora himself to be like " wtf Xehanort??". How do you figure this isn't personal to him? Not to mention attempting to commit mass genocide by drowning the world in darkness with the Keybade War is more than enough reason. A firetrucking apocalypse!! How can you say Sora himself has no reason to personally deal with him?

Ok now that I got that off my chest I do want multiple playable characters. They have much better capabilities to do such nowadays with that and should utilize that. I just found some of your above reasoning faulty.

They could have us play Lea or Kairi in the prologue training kinda like the Roxas KH2 prologue. (Things like that.)

Heck it doesn't even have to be DDD. Ansem SoD basically ruined their life when he destroyed the Islands in the first game. You can see in KH2 when he looks at the portrait of AX that he spites him in a way.

Im sorta hoping that its gonna be a little like Final Fantasy 13. A bunch of characters going their own roads but eventually keep meeting up to take down the big villains. Everyone gets their own enemies but sora's story still gets explored the most

Ok, so I've been meaning to make this topic for quite some time. While I have stated my wishes on this topic and my reasoning in other topics, these were only in the form of replies/comments. I decided it was about time I made a topic on this and gave ALL my reasoning and thoughts on this subject. You might recognise some from a Youtuber known as 'Frustrated Jacob'.

Now please note before I start that I fully respect other people's opinions as I know that there are some of you who disagree with me.  Please do not take any offence from what I say in this topic. However, every time I've seen/heard someone say that they do not wish multiple playable characters in KH3, they have never given any good reasoning. Which is why I will first tackle some, if not all, these reasons and say why I disagree with the reason. Without further ado, let's begin:

1. "Kingdom Hearts 3 should only have Sora as a playable character because this is his time to shine."

My Response: Sora has had his time to shine in Kingdom Hearts 1, Chain of Memories, 2 and Dream Drop Distance. What about the other characters? What about Riku, Kairi, Roxas, Xion, Namine, Terra, Aqua, Ventus and Lea? Some of these characters barley had any time to shine compared to Sora. Ever since Chain of Memories, this hasn't been about Sora only. While Sora does need some character development as he hasn't had much compared to the others (except for Chain of Memories, which was amazing) the others deserve as much, especially Kairi.

At this point, I don't think Sora should even be the one to defeat Xehanort. You know why? Because Sora has never met nor even seen the guy once.. at all. Sora has no personal relationship with Xehanort. He has no reason to battle him except for the fact that 'HE'S THE BAD GUY!' Just look at the others: Terra, Aqua and Ventus had their lives torn apart by the old man, Lea got his best friend taken away from him to become a vessel, Roxas was used by his Nobody without even knowing who he is or where he came from, Riku has had a conflict with his Heartless, Kairi is probably pissed at the guy for preventing her from spending time with her boyfriend. You see where I'm getting at here? What does Sora have? I mean Xemnas made fun of him a little in DDD... Yeah, not enough. Sure, he had his friends taken away, but it's not as personal as the others I've mentioned. The best Sora's had against an enemy was in COM against Marluxia. He was torturing the sweet, innocent Namine so much as to crucifying her in the manga. And look at Sora's face after defeating him. He has no sympathy or remorse whatsoever. Just anger because of what he did to Namine. Sure he didn't know her, but his fake memories of her were still what drove him forward. That's what the others have, something to drive them forward against Xehanort. Let me ask a question. In the final world in DDD, which seemed more story driven and included development with their respective characters? Sora or Riku?

2. "Kingdom Hearts 3 should have only Sora playable because it's a numbered title. So the trend must go on."

I'm sorry. but I really don't see the logic behind this, at all. Kingdom Hearts 2 (a numbered title) already had multiple playable characters (just for a little while) so that 'trend' was never there to begin with.

3. "We could have other characters playable but only in small segments, like Riku at the end of KH2."

Now this has some good reasoning, well, compared to the others in my opinion. Riku and Mickey in Kingdom Hearts 2 were playable yes, but only in limited moments. What was also limited was their abilities. They both had only three abilities: Jump, Dark Aura or Pearl and Attack. Wow what a variation! (Note the sarcasm). You're telling me that you want these segments with that limited amount of things to do? The segments shouldn't exist at all. They should be playable wherever we want and whenever we want. They need to have their own stats, levels and abilities just like Sora. Having so little to do with characters doesn't really make them as fun as if they had the capacity as Sora.

4. "Their stories could be only in cutscenes."

Really? Let's say there's this awesome spectacular battle between two characters, let's say Lea and Isa (perfect). Would you rather simply see it in a cutscene or would you rather actually be part of the battle and play as Lea to make the battle a more immersive experience? I think the latter has the upper hand here. Another perfect example was the the battle between Roxas and Sora in Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix (specifically). The battle was SO much better when they made Roxas an actual boss battle! And lookie there! the cutscene was still there! Why not have both cutscene and playable experience. The same thing goes for simply exploring through the world instead of having characters simply appearing in one place and appearing in the next through simple cutscenes. It's better if you actually explore the world yourself and take control of the character. Let me give an example. A what-if scenario. Let's say you're playing Kingdom Hearts 2 and you're in The World that Never Was. You're on your way to the top... only through cutscenes. Wouldn't you rather run and fight you're way through it and feel a sense of accomplishment?

5. "If we had multiple playable characters, then we'd have to play different story lines one after the other like in Birth By Sleep."

Who says it has to be like Birth By Sleep? They can just as easily make it like Dream Drop Distance, except without the drop meter. They can simply have Sora, Donald and Goofy go through a certain number of worlds while Kairi and Lea go through a number of worlds that the other group haven't gone through yet. Example: Sora goes to Twilight Town while Kairi goes to Radiant Garden. Sure there's a limit, but no time limit. We can have a team of Sora, Riku and Kairi and you can switch between these characters mid-combat with the simple push of L2 or R2 (or the Xbox One's respective buttons). "But that's too much, that's not something that we've seen in other KH games." And to that I say: Every single Kingdom Hearts game has introduced multiple gameplay functions that other KH games do not have. Just look at Kingdom Hearts 2! This game had SO many things you could do that Kingdom Hearts 1 didn't have: Limits, Reaction Commands, changing party members at will, Drive Forms and Keyblades having their own abilities. Kingdom Hearts 3 is two generations ahead of Kingdom Hearts 2, so it's definitely going to have a lot more gameplay functions than Kingdom Hearts 2. Further proving this is the fact that Tetsuya Nomura stated in a very recent interview that KH3 will have more worlds than KH2. I rest my case.

Now finally, I'm going to say this which doesn't apply to this last question (#5) so think of this as a number six but with no quote. This is a message to all those who disagree with me. Again, please take no offence as I mean to give none of that.

This is Kingdom Hearts 3! This is going to be a climactic battle of epic proportions between seven heroes and thirteen villains and you want to stay stuck in Sora's big shoes? If Sora was the only one playable then that would mean that either:

a) The others fight in cutscenes, which ruins the experience as I stated earlier.

or

b) Sora kicks everyone's butt, which completely defeats the purpose of having seven lights to begin with.

We need to play as all these characters and finish what they started, especially Terra, Aqua and Ventus. Their story is not over and the same goes for the others. It is their destiny to fight against Xehanort and finish this once and for all!

Kingdom Hearts 3 needs multiple playable characters. It's a must! Enough said!

Do you agree? Do you still disagree? Do you have a reason, one that makes sense at least? If so, leave a reply.

1. Oh good, the main character got three games out of seven.

Except that DDD was Riku's game and Sora was a late addition.

And Sora and Riku shared CoM, too

What about Riku? He's been central since KH1. DDD was his game, he also got time in the spotlight in CoM, was the focal point of KH2, the antagonist of Days. Plus he's the original Kingdom Key Wielder. He's had plenty. Kairi? Honestly it's too late. The best they can do with her now is make her more relevant. Roxas got his own game. Xion was the focal point of the game. TAV got their own game. Lea got a keyblade, and he was supposed to die, so he made out like a bandit already. Sora is the only character to have any real character development beyond shouting his feelings at key points in the story. And that's why it's important that he CONTINUE to develop as he's the MAIN CHARACTER. Sora has no connection with Xehanort? You mean besides having hsi life altered by his actions, fighting Ansem, fighting Xemnas, interacting with Young Xehanort, and ultimately being kidnapped by Old Xehanort? Never mind that Sora has plenty of reason to be motivated by what he's done to his friends. All these pother characters have sub plots, and those can be dealt with, but the solution isn't to make every damn character playable. That'll just be a safe way to guarantee the game doesn't turn out good.

2.Then let me explain the trend to you. Numbered KH games are SIGNIFICANTLY higher quality than the rest, and a big part of that is that they're the only ones that focus on a single character, rather than spreading sources thin. It's also just plain Sora's story. Clogging things up with all of his friends on the FINAL game of a decade long saga? That's silly

3. The limited scope is what makes the extra characters work in KH2. Every new ability you give to Riku is an ability that Sora doesn't get. Do you see what I'm getting at? The more characters you add, the closer it gets to the shallowness you just said you hate. Also everyone loves playing as Mickey because he's an OP bastard

4.KH has a lot of cutscenes, so this is just kinda expected. But if you really need to play those battles, that's where the limited characters come in. You play as Lea and fight Saix. That's it. No leveling up, no customization, just a set of abilities and that's that.

5.World switching WITHOUT the limit makes things awkward, as you'd be taken  away from your ability to level up other characters, or customize them, for arbitrary amounts of time. Again, cutting aw ya for a quick battle or something with a limited command setup could work, in some capacity. Switching characters has tonnes of problems. Loading complex characters with different abilities and levels on the fly, for one, but there's also just the issue of having three custom characters you can switch on the fly. It's just too much. KH2 added a lot of things, yeah, but did you forget the part where they were all added for one character?

6.It's big, yeah. And that's why avoiding being spread too thin is crucial. you keep talking about ruining the experience, but as far as I'm concerned, it'd be a lot worse to switch between seven poorly fleshed out characters rather than stick with one fully developed one.

Also, I'd like to introduce you to option C:

Sora teams up with his friends who have big battles. Thus proving that friendship and stuff

you get your climatic battle, but also get fleshed out gameplay. Simple.

Yeaa no I'll stick with having Sora as the main playable character for KH3. I feel like all the games prior to KH3 have served their purpose of introducing new characters/better establishing old characters in preparation for this last game. We were allowed to play as multiple characters other than Sora so that we could understand their stories better and now that we do its time to hand the reigns back over to Sora so we can end this story. In a sense all those other characters besides Sora had their time in the spotlight and now the natural way to end the series is by playing as Sora. We don't need this game getting cluttered up with so many other playable characters. It would ruin the game flow.

It worked in KH2 because you only played as Roxas for the prologue and then after that it was Sora all the way. Having multiple playable characters and then trying to balance it so they all share equal screen time would be a nightmare and I can see it severely weakening the overall story. Let's keep the focus on Sora, seeing how he is THE main character and this was originally his story from the start.

Honestly how in the world can you balance multiple playable characters with what Sora's capable now.It will take to much time and effort trying to balance everyone, time i would rather they spend fleshing Sora's abilities the best they can.

All i'm hoping is we get a bigger permanent party so i can switch out Donald and Goofy with Aqua and some other wielder.Always wanted to have a full keyblade wielder party.

Stop right there, I don't need to read your explanation to agree with you. It just needs multiple characters. Because it's just that big. And it's just that good. And we deserve it. Nuf said.

Seriously though, I don't care how it's done, as long as we get to play as other characters who deserve the spotlight as well. At the very least Riku and Mickey (who I believe were already hinted at being playable since they are on their own quest, but we'll see), Lea, Kairi (GOOD GOD I WANT TO PLAY AS KAIRI SO BAD!!), and then maybe(hopefully) as Roxas, Ventus, Terra, Aqua, and Xion, even if it's for shorter moments. I understand that having too many characters runs the risk of diluting the experience, but it can work well depending on how you apply the concept. I mean 358/2 Days had the largest cast of playable characters ever, but they were all available in multiplayer mode outside of story mode. This allowed for the story to develop and stand out on its own while the experience to play as Organization FREAKING XIII without derailing Roxas' story. But what if we want all these characters to be playable as part of the story? Well again, Birth by Sleep might be a good example to look at, with allowing the same story to transpire with three different perspectives to go through. While one character is doing this thing in one world another character is doing something else in another world at the same time. Plus for multiplayer it made for a nice way to differentiate between players. But the consequence of that approach is that it makes the story of each individual character a bit shorter compared to a game like KH2 where you played most of the game largely as one character. Then Dream Drop Distance is the next example, where there was a system of switching between characters on the fly and continuing the overall story from both perspectives at the same time. Not saying a Drop system would make sense in KH3's setting, but some other kind of mechanism where you can switch between characters campaigns whenever you want without breaking the flow or length of each one's story would  be a pretty cool idea. Preferably within one save file...not that I wouldn't make individual ones anyway, that's just how I am. There are lots of ways to go about bringing in multiple playable characters into this epic game without having to compromise any of its awesomeness, you just have to do it wisely.

I will say though, as much as I want to play as other characters, I don't want it to be at the expense of Sora's spotlight. I mean, yes I agree that we need to see more of these characters in a fully playable format, in this game more than any, but we can't forget that Sora has and always will be the main antagonist. And I do disagree with your statement that Sora shouldn't fight Xehanort as the last boss. That's what this whole thing has been building up to. And who's to say that Sora won't get to become more familiar with Master Xehanort throughout the game itself. If you recall, Sora didn't even know anything about Ansem before he fought him in the end of KH1, just that he was some researcher who kept a report on his findings of the heart, that he went mad and gave up his body, possessed his best friend, and that he was trying to destroy everybody. He didn't have to know who he was in his past to understand that he was a threat that had to be stopped. And anything he needed to know he learned throughout the game, and even then, how much screentime have they had together? Probably about 30 minutes total out of a 12+ hour long game. And yet it still worked. And Kingdom Hearts II wasn't any different. Yeah, Sora knew about the threat earlier, but he had only been around Xemnas a few times (doesn't even acknowledge that one time in KH1) and still considered him a bad guy. But Xemnas was staying true to the role he had in that game and after seeing all the problems that he had caused Sora understood enough to realize that he needed to be stopped. Sora doesn't really have a more familiar understanding of these enemies until after they were beaten, and that history only really shows in Dream Drop Distance. This is like Sora's second time having to face Xemnas again, while Riku at this point may as well get a free doughnut after the numerous times he's had to talk to Ansem in the whole series. And no matter how you look at it, it's the same foe who's been fighting Sora again and again. He just hasn't seen his old face before. And again, if the past few games have been any indication, it's that Sora will get the screen time and exposure with his "new" enemy that he needs. It might not be much more than previous games, but he really doesn't need much, just enough. I mean, yes of course it would make sense to have some confrontation between Xehanort and Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, but really I want to see everybody interact with each other. I especially want to see Sora, Ventus, Roxas, Xion, and Vanitas in the same scene together, good god that would be hilariously awesome!

Sora WILL be the one who faces Master Xehanort in the end, and rest assured the game will give him plenty of reason to story and character wise.

I love all the characters in the KH series, but there comes to a point where I don't want to play 10 different characters to finish one game. Sora will forever and always be the main protagonist in this series. I already got tired of playing 3 different people to finish BBS Story line.  I really don't need 10+ ppl to finish KH3.

The only way I want to play as someone other than Sora would be like how KH2 did it with playing as someone else for the tutorial and a few limited parts later in the game. This story started with Sora and should end with him.

I don't see anything wrong with playing as just Sora, we've had our chance with multiple characters in DDD and BbS, and I loathed that damn drop meter so I'm happy for just one character again. Also dude, Sora's the main character, they aren't just gonna change that fact now.

Sora will always be the hero after KH3, so why shouldn't the other Keyblade wielders get the spotlight for the finale of the Xehanort saga? Maybe we won't see them again in future titles or we won't get the chance to play with them.

I agree with the request for other playable characters. But knowing Square Enix, they're probably going to be limited costly DLC packages (Preorder KH3 and you can do "Kairi's Mark Of Mastery").

As far as Sora Vs Xehanort, we have two scenarios. The first scenario would be Xehanort taunting and being a personal burden to Sora in Kingdom Hearts 3. Alternatively, Young Master Xehanort is somebody that Sora couldn't stand in Dream Drop Distance. Sora was about to strike him down in The Symphony Of Sorcery and Sora would have been angry with Young Master Xehanort manipulating Sora's darkness.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is going to surprise us as much as the E3 2015 Trailer. Expect the unexpected with the plot.

They said they wouldn't do story DLC's for their games. They got backlash after XIII-2
