Explain to Me Why 358/2 Days is Good

Recommended Posts

Here's your chance, I constantly get told that Days is actually a good game, and that I'm either a hater, or I secretly love the game

So here's the plan

You tell me why Days is good in the best way you can, and I'll do my best to counter those points

Go ahead

take your best shot

idk it shows us why the sun sets red and stuff

did I ever tell you why KHDays is red?

Because of all the KH games, it's the one people ant to get away from the fastest

I thought everyone considerd days the worst in the series alongside codded

you'd be surprised how many KH fans love the game

if you want a reason, you'll have to keep an eye on this topic because  definitely don't know why

also Re:Coded was fantastic

I don't need to explain why 358/2 Days is a good because it's my favorite side-story game in the Kingdom Hearts series. As long as I like the game than I'm good. I don't care if people hate it.

Actually their are some people who hate 358/2 Days and their are some people who like 358/2 Days.

Why do I like Days?  Simple - The story telling is amazing.  I really felt the friendship between Roxas, Axel and Xion.  I loved the feeling I got whenever I saw them eating ice cream together on the roof.  It kinda felt like I was there.  Maybe it was because I've always wanted that for myself, or maybe it was because it was my first semester at a new school in a new town.  Either way, it was one of those games I was sad when I beat it, and not just because of the ending (which I found bittersweet).  I like the mission structure because it made me really feel like I was actually going on missions for the organization.  Basically, I connected with it and that's why it's a good game.

There's nothing to explain. The game is bad and one of the worst so far. Its repetitive and boring.

There's always the black sheeps. This game is just one of them.

The only good thing is the main trio and some cutscenes.

Well you see hatok, it is good for a number of reasons.

Let me elaborate in as much detail as I can..

Just kidding I can't. Xion is joke of a character and the mission-based gameplay was boring. I liked the cutscenes because they were cool on the DS at the time.

Because it builds upon CoM's themes of memory and identity, has interesting gameplay mechanics, and decent enough graphics for a DS game.Is it amazing? No. Is it good? Yup.

If by builds on you mean "it's also there" then.. still no. CoM did stuff with the memory, it actually has  a story, with characters. Sora actually grappled with the concept of memories, while for Xion is was jsut an external force that physically impacted her. Where we have Sora wondering what's important to him, he have her getting exhausted and losing the keyblade. Where we have Sora's philosophy on fake memories, we have Xion being a shape shifter.

In terms of interesting gameplay, there was, what.

Limited magic, which had to be used on specific enemies

Bad combo system that removed everything good about a KH game's combat

Limit breaks which you generally had to abuse because enemies have waaaayyy too much health

panels, which just limits what you can do rather than offering new potential

Is it great? Definitely not. Is it good? No. It's mediocre, at best.

Trio? It's just Roxas and Axel, what are you talking about?

As a story it's decent as game it was pretty bad. I cannot tell you how much I hate chasing that damn Green Serenade around Wonderland.

The story is exactly on par with the gameplay

there were things i did not like at all. (some of the missions, like i HATED those ones where you have to stay out of the line of sight of whoever, my hands shake a lot sometimes... it was a bitch. i also don't like how they turned roxas into a five or six year old sometimes...i understand why it was done, but the game border lined on  rediculas sometimes. and some of the worlds were really annoying.

its not my favorite game. though from a story perspective, kingdom hearts is normally told from our heros points of veiw (sora riku kairi/ aqua terra ven mostly sora and riku) its kind of intresting to me that it shows a whole new perspective and side to the story we dont really get to see in the other games. wether you value that or not is your call

So, as I see it

Even alot of the people who really like the game can agree that the gameplay is very mediocre or bad in some places

It helped give (or at least elaborate) on the reason why Roxas left the Organization.

Any other good stuff? I honest have no clue. The gameplay was atrocious and the story was just decent. Not good, but not terrible either.

Looking at the series as a whole it has to be the most unnecessary KH game. I mean I didn't have to have an in-depth explanation for what Roxas did during his time in the Organization, why he left, and why it took Sora about a year to regain his memories. I assumed he killed heartless and followed orders, and then one day he began to question his ability to wield a keyblade and ran off to find his answer. He ran into Riku and then bam KH2 starts. As for why it took a year for Sora to wake up, I figured Namine had done some serious enough damage to his memories so naturally a year might be a reasonable amount of time for fixing that sort of thing. I don't remember saying to myself while playing KH2, "Hey this game is good but it sure would be nice if I could know what Roxas did for almost every single day he was in the Organization, preferably presented to me through a tedious mission based video game. That'd be cool."

(I also don't remember saying after beating KH2 "That plot sure did wrap up nicely. It'd be nice if a few more games came along and made things more complicated," but that's a different issue...)

Well, here's why I like it:

-The grid system forced me to prioritize. It meant everything affected each other -- keyblades, magic, abilities, even items, all took up space that influenced what you could equip. Is that a bad thing? To me, not at all. It meant everything had a tradeoff, and I liked working within the limitations it gave me. Because you needed to closely manage everything, everything became important. I took it as a challenge to decide what I kept and what had to go. It meant I needed to adjust my playing accordingly. Don't have as many potions because of your new keyblade and magic? Welp, guess you gotta be careful until you get more panels!

-I liked the limited magic. In fact, it's my favorite system besides BBS's. I barely used magic in other KH games besides BBS, so Days was a pleasant surprise by making it both a limited resource, and actually effective for damage. And certain spells are only effective against certain enemies? Uh... yeah. Either stock the spell, make use of the spells you do have, or find another way to kill 'em.

-Oh, and I never needed to go out of my way to use a limit break. I found plenty of ways to clear the screen without them, not that I used them much to begin with, because I bothered to manage my HP.

-The story? An unnecessary installment isn't synonymous with an unwelcome installment; I didn't need Crisis Core to better appreciate FFVII, but I like it on its own merits and am ultimately thankful that it does exist. Days gave me a game about Roxas's time in the Organization, and I like Roxas, sooo... cool beans? I liked following it, endless clocktower scenes and all. In fact, I dislike the 1.5 movie specifically because it removed/altered many of the small-but-poignant scenes that actually seemed to flesh out the characters. I also appreciated how Days directly connects to multiple games. It's a treat to have known what went on in the background of the other installments.

-I didn't find the missions repetitive at all, at least not repetitive in the bad way. So what if most missions boiled down to "kill all enemies"? It was still fun to kill the enemies, with my prioritized abilities (see my first point). Mobs had enough different placements and strengths to shake things up... though the less I say about Wonderland, the better. (I didn't like it in KH1, either.)

If you're going to "refute" me by saying that, no, I was incorrect to have fun for my listed reasons, then I'm curious to know how your arguments will magically poof away the fun I did have playing it... multiple times. Yes, it's the KH game I replayed the most out of all of them. Still love it. Or, if you're gonna make fun of my bad taste, remember that the objective of playing a game is to have fun. I had fun.

Graphics being wonky as all get out at times, it's the story: It starts innocently enough, but as it goes on, more and more becomes clear, and more things from KH II start making sense, and the whole horrible puzzle comes together as the game ends, and the cycle starts over where KH II began, with Roxas blissfully unaware of the fate DAYs lays out for him.

Is the gameplay great?

No.

Are the missions on occasion boring?

Yes.

But the story saves it in the end.

That's why it's good.

I disagree the story was basic the series could have done fine without it but not as atrocious as the gameplay. That's just my opinion.

I personally love 358/2 Days! No, it is not my favorite, but I did enjoy it. The gameplay was different and I had fun arranging my panels. The #1 reason I like this game is the story though. I liked the introduction of Xion and seeing how these days played a role in the larger story of Kingdom Hearts.
