Wanting to get into MGS (rant?)

Recommended Posts

So I have been wanting to get into the MGS series for a long time actually, I believe it was a year or two before Ground Zeroes came out.  Metal Gear Solid series is such a great series and I heard that it has an amazing story and that it might be hard to follow (but then again Kingdom Hearts is as well) if you don't play all the games, which is what I want to do at some point but since Ground Zeroes as well as Rising Revengeance is part of the Golden Week sale on PSN I might pick both of them up for cheap and I might end up picking up MGS5 if I like how the other two play and then at some point pick up the rest of them in the Legacy Collection that came out a few years ago.  I guess this could be called a rant I'm not really talking bad about this series I really respect the series and heard all but mostly great things about this series I just fear that I won't end up liking it and I'm ok with it if I don't like it but I'm wont hate it like I said I will always respect this game series considering all of the things I have heard of it.  I guess the reason why I think I won't like it is because of some of the trophies that could be tied to the games (I somewhat consider myself as a Trophy Collector/Hunter, that and I kinda hate not seeing it being 100% or have that platinum trophy next to it), I know these games are somewhat heavy on stealth and I actually like that about games, like in the Last of Us I always try to stealth kill everything and that's how I see MGS even though that might not be entirely true because like I said I'm only going off of the things I have seen or heard about the games I haven't really touched an MGS game, It's kind of how I didn't know if I wanted to get Bloodborne or not because of close it is to the Souls series and I never really played those ether I still got it and I actually love that game, it could be like something like this with MGS.  Idk I will probably get Ground Zeroes and Revengeance and if I don't enjoy it that much to get the other games I won't but if I do I will probably end up getting MGS5 when it comes out and then get the rest of the games afterwords and then play them in order of release so I could get a better understanding of the series (that and maybe they might announce The Legacy Collection for the current gen consoles so I could get it for that and if not that is fine) Ok this is the end of my rant, then again Idk if you can call this a rant I just wanted to talk about how I felt about this since it's kind of been eating at me for a bit and I just wanted it out there so, end.

So......that was a rant?

Idk actually when I think of the word rant I think of complaining about something to some extent in a negative way, but it could also be talking about something in a positive way maybe so I'm not sure if this would technically be a rant or not.

I used to feel the same way, but my friend lent me his legacy collection and so far the series has become one of my new favorites. And I should point out, I HATE shooters. Or at least MMO style shooters, like Halo and Call of Duty and such. The way I feel, if a game is going to be gun focused in terms of combat, then it should at least either be made like an action movie or as a supplement and not the main focus of the gameplay and action experience. Thankfully for me, despite how many times you need to rely on gun based weaponry, it never felt imposing like it does with other kinds of games, again, mostly due to it's cinematic nature. That cinematic nature is also what I love so much about the series. It literally treats itself like a well-written action movie, with gripping scenes of daring-do mixed in with calmer scenes that express and invoke a lot of emotion, as well as a lot of well thought out intelligence and research. As I typically do, I started with the first released game, which is conveniently placed within the main menu of MGS3, and worked up from there, and in a way it almost felt like discovering Kingdom Hearts for the first time. In fact, this series is kind of parallel with Kingdom Hearts in a few senses, like how much it's core gamplay has developed and evolved over time, how many sequels and side stories it has, and how the plot gets more and more intricate and complex and less straight forward as each game is introduced. By now I realize that it actually makes sense for me to be into this game due to all of the various concepts of gaming and storytelling that Kingdom Hearts introduced me to. And I can honestly say that the MGS series is very fun and very rewarding, so I definitely recommend it. I never stressed out on the trophies that much, but there are a lot of cool ones, some of them are actually very funny (you'll see what I mean once you achieve "Snake Beater" X] ). I wish you best of luck getting a hold of these games, and if I could recommend your playing order, I would see if I could get the legacy collection and play the games in order of release date. Keep in mind that in order to get a download code for Metal Gear Solid 1 you would have to buy a new copy of the collection, but it's worth it. Also, if you have a Gamecube or Wii, I would highly recommend buying and playing Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, it's essentially a 6th Gen remake of MGS1, with a style of gameplay that resembles MGS2, as well as redone cutscenes and voice acting. I would really recommend playing it after the original MGS1, since you can compare between the classic and the renovation, as well as get prepared for the gameplay basics of MGS2. I hope you have fun with this series like I have!

Well, first of all, Revengeance isn't relevant to the main story, and plays completely differently from the other games, so don't start with that.

I haven't had that much experience with the series, but I know MGS3 is an amazing game. It's also the first game chronologically, so I'd start with that.

The story does get a little convoluted, but no worse than Kingdom Hearts :)

Whatever you do, do NOT start with the chronological order of the story. Trust me, it's going to make things alot more confusing. Also it's better if you experience the story in the order the games were released.

Anyway. Most people in the west started with Metal Gear Solid.

So I'd say that you could skip the first two NES games till a little later.

The order I recommend you going through the game is as follows.

  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
  • Metal Gear + Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (both translated in English and included together with MGS3)
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Infact, if you buy the Legacy Collection you get all those game plus the VR missions of MGS.

And the last two which are Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and the yet to be released game (September 1st) Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Another thing I'd like to include is the canon games.

You might think that MGS: Portable Ops and MGR: Revengeance are canon but they aren't. At least not in the story Kojima wants to tell. Both weren't made by him so he doesn't consider them 100% canon which is why PO isn't included in the Legacy Collection. You can of course play them and consider them canon if you want but I'm just saying what Kojima is.

Anyway, now it's actually a good time to play those games considering the "last" one in the canon series is about to be released. Not that Kojima is leaving Konami they will milk MGS so hard we are going to get flooded by the milk. I'll be abandoning this ship as soon as MGS5 comes around.

It was amazing while it lasted.

I just feel I wouldn't be able to give all the games the time they deserve before MGS5 comes out, I'm going to start with Ground Zeroes and see how I like it from there and then maybe I will get the Legacy Collection and play through the story in all of them once.  And I know I am going to play them in release order that is normally the best thing to do in this kind of situation, similar to Kingdom Hearts you are better off playing them from release order rather than chronological to get a better understanding of the story, I'm having Ground Zeroes downloading right now and will probably be playing that for the rest of the week and see how I feel about it and then maybe I will get the Legacy Collection and play through those games.  I know that Revengeance isn't part of the main cannon but it looks amazing and since it was cheap I got it so why not lol
