Shulk 8,623 Posted April 17, 2015 Of course, with the new Star Wars movie coming soon, I've been getting really excited. I've always heard of the EU, but I admittedly haven't really explored it much. I have some games (KOTOR, Dark Forces, etc.), but I've never gotten to read the books or comics. I'm not really sure where to start, so I figured that it could help to ask on here. Is anyone able to recommend any specific parts of the Star Wars EU? I don't really have any preferences, I just want a good starting point. Also, please don't say anything along the lines of "It's not canon, so don't bother." It's something I've wanted to get into for ages, but never knew how to do so. I appreciate any sort of recommendation! 1 The Transcendent Key reacted to this
Ruby Rose 8,591 Posted April 17, 2015 Not only will this have expanded universe elements but supposedly those elements will be canon between VI and VII No doubt this will be littered with $100+ of DLC but I will still suggest it:
Shulk 8,623 Posted April 17, 2015 Not only will this have expanded universe elements but supposedly those elements will be canon between VI and VII No doubt this will be littered with $100+ of DLC but I will still suggest it: Wait, hold on a second. The new Battlefront's going to have canon material? Crap... I'm planning on waiting until it's released to see if I want to get it or not. I'm not big on EA's games, although I've heard that a lot of people have been disappointed with their newer games. I can't really speak from experience, but it's gotten me a little worried about this one. I'm hoping it will end up being a good game, of course. Speaking of the new Battlefront, is it on PS3/360, or just PS4/XBO/PC? If it's not on PS3, I'm going to have to wait on this one. Gives me more time to finish my other Star Wars games, I guess. Kaweebo 3,617 Posted April 18, 2015 (edited) If you want to get into the Old Republic stuff, it can't hurt anything, but these are my recommendations for movie-era EU sources. All of the sources I'm recommending are 'non-canon' (minus the TV show) but they aren't really contradicted by any official source so, until they are, they remain canon to me. Some of this stuff is actually crucial to the characters, as well. The Jedi Apprentice/Jedi Quest young adult novel series' detailing Obi-Wan and Anakin's respective times as Jedi apprentices under their respective masters. The Darth Maul comic series set before Episode I. Star Wars: Rogue Planet which takes place directly after Episode I. Star Wars: The Approaching Storm, which is essentially the prequel to Episode II. The Boba Fett young adult novel series during the Clone Wars. Star Wars: The Cestus Deception, Yoda: Dark Rendevous and Jedi Trial, all of which take place during The Clone Wars. Jedi Trial is particularly important since it deals with how Anakin becomes a Jedi, something that seems to be overlooked in Disney's canon. The entire The Clone Wars TV show. Darth Maul: Death Sentence, set during the Clone Wars. Star Wars: Labyrinth of Evil, the prequel to Episode III and which is actually directly referenced in the film itself. I'd also recommend you read the Revenge of the Sith novel as, honestly, it's 10X better than the film. Star Wars: Kenobi, showing the first week or so of Obi-Wan's time on Tatooine. The Star Wars: Purge comic series and Dark Lord: the Rise of Darth Vader novel. The novel is actually sort-of-kind-of semi-canon since the Disney novel 'Tarkin' references parts of it. After that, though, you can pretty much skip the majority of the Original Trilogy EU. Most of it sucks, in my opinion. Just begin reading Disney's stuff. Hardrada 117 Posted April 22, 2015 Most people started with "Heir to the Empire", which was one of the early EU book series. 1 Shulk reacted to this
The Transcendent Key 12,109 Posted April 22, 2015 Well, I myself haven't explored the Expanded Universe deep enough, but I do recommend you reading the Clone Wars comic book series, and then there's also the Clone Wars TV show that lasted for a good number of years! There's also Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which is a great video game that takes place between Episodes III and IV, and in said game, Darth Vader has an apprentice named Starkiller! Great stuff! And well, that's pretty much all I know about the Expanded Universe! Good God, I really need to get into the Expanded Universe more!
