I think it's ironic how Keyblade wielders disappear, but their weapons remain behind. Almost like the Keyblade itself literally becomes the embodiment of everything they are. Proof that they ever existed, if you will.

I always assumed it was the special way someone dies or disappears when they are killed by the keyblade. Its a magical weapon so it would make sense that when youre killed by it your body dies differently.

Remember when goofy got hit in the head and everyone thought he had died from it? Sure he wasnt really dead but everyone thought he was. They thought he was dead even though his body was left behind. This proves that this disappearing or fading away death is reserved for beings like nobodies, heartless, replicas, and those who are killed or destroyed by the keyblade.

Pyreflies refer to Hitodama[view · edit · purge]Hitodama (人魂?) ("human soul") are believed in Japanese folklore to be the souls of the newly dead taking form of mysterious fiery apparitions. The word is a combination of the Japanese words hito, meaning "human", and tama (short for tamashii), meaning "soul". The flames appear as glowing spheres with tails and are said to be found near graveyards and in gloomy forests, and, sometimes, seen close to a dying person as an apparition of the soul leaving the body before passing to the other side.

Well there are a couple of theories regarding this, my personal favorite is that it is the animation of a person who has been slain by a keyblade and are then transferring their heart to another, Sora's "death" is the only one that kind of negates this theory, but not really as I would like to think that he transferred his heart into a shadow, rather than an emblem heartless which would have symbolized his heart being captured by darkness. But yeah, I will have to look at vanitas' death again to see if the animation is used, but if it is could help us to see about his return.
