Would the franchise be better if Riku was the main character?

Recommended Posts

Riku was originally supposed to be the main hero. But he fell into darkness. Would the franchise be better if he was the star of series?

No, Riku wasn't supposed to be the main character, ever, at any point. First it was Mickey, then Donald, then Sora. And if he had been made the main character it would be a totally different story, we wouldn't connect with the Disney characters like we do with Sora because Riku is socially awkward. And we'd have had to listen to him mope about the darkness in every world. He's a good character, but playing as him in as many games as w have Sora would just grate on my nerves.

While as far the game development went, Riku wasn't in the running to be the main character, he was suppose to be the one The Keyblade went to in the story. On that basis, I...can't say. I think his fall was important to his character and that he became hero material after he learned those lessons. A Riku centered KH series would be darker in my mind, all about redemption and over coming personal demons.

In the end, the ideas are just different enough to me that they are hard to compare. Both sound good to me.

If Riku was the main protagonist than the Kingdom Hearts series would of been different. His interaction with the Disney characters and Final Fantasy characters would of been different, and the whole Kingdom Hearts atmosphere would been different. I love Riku but I think Sora was born to be the main Protagonist of the Kingdom Hearts series. However my main concern is will Kairi will finally stop being the damsel in the distress and start defending for herself. I hope her Keyblade training will be worth it.

On topic: No thank you. The thought of the implied relationships between Kairi and [in this case] Riku... no. No thank you.

Technically, Sora isn't the main character, only the main protagonist. Xehanort is the real main character, at least in the franchise as a whole, since the story actually revolves around, and who primarily steers the course of the story.

With that said, would the franchise be better if Riku was the main protagonist? While I prefer Riku as a character over Sora, I don't think so. If Riku was the main character, the story would have to be grittier and darker as a result, or else playing as him would feel out of place. And personally, I think Kingdom Hearts is better off being the lighthearted and fun, yet still deep and compelling franchise that it is.

That said, I would love to see Riku star in his own spin off series some time after KH3 is released.

that's not how main characters work. That's just Xehanort being the antagonist

the story doesn't focus on Xehanort, we barely learn anything about him, and he works in the background most of the time

It's Sora's story, Xehanort's jsut part of it

If it wasn't for Birth by Sleep, 358/2 Days, and Riku's half of 3D, I would agree with you. However, those games count for nearly half of the story, and yet Sora plays only a minor role in them. Xehanort is what drives the entire plot, while Sora merely reacts to it. The series began as one about Sora, and his quest to find his friends, but after Kingdom Hearts II, it evolved into one about a man striving to recreate Kingdom Hearts. Also, try explaining the overall plot of the series with Sora at the center of it, like many do, and it seemed really confusing. But explain it with Xehanort at the center, and things start to makes a lot more sense. Will Xehanort continue to be the main character once the Xehanort Saga is over? Of course not, but for now, if you take every Kingdom Hearts game into consideration, I believe Xehanort is the main character.
