Thoughts on Tales of?

Recommended Posts

My favorite videogame saga. If you love RPGs, there is absolutely no reason to not get Tales of games. It has everything you are looking for: great stories (specially the latest ones like Tales of Xillia and Tales of Grace F), great character evolving system, TONS (and I mean TOOOONS) of subquest, different characters playable. The combat system is awesome in every of the game, you really need to practice to master it.Also, it's difficult on the hardest mode. Tales of Grace F, Tales of Xillia 1 and Talex of Xillia 2 optional bosses are the most hardest bosses I've ever fought and I mainly play RPGs. If you wanna defeat them, get ready to do a lot of grinding. If you don't wanna beat them on the hardest mode, you can switch difficulty in the menu so no problem even for casual gamers.

I love the Tales of Series. Since I was little i played all of em I could get. Tales of Symphonia being my personal favorite (get the HD remastered for the PS3) Symphonia 2 was awful to me, though. Second favorite being Tales of Graces F, but that's a long one yet so worth it. Haven't gotten too far into Tales of Xillia yet so can't say sing it's praises yet, but battle system is fun. Let me know what ya think when ya get started!

I highly recommend Abyss I am a Tales of Fan and i still think it is one of the best Tales of also every Tales of on the PS3 is good (aside from Zestiria since I can't have an opinion on that until i played it) but since you are not really familiar with Tales of Battle Systems (since there are ALWAYS things that are different in every game) i suggest you play Symphonia Chronicles or Xillia 1&2 before Graces F.

Yeah it is especially it is the port of the PS 2 version which is a little bit enhanced from the original 2-disc GC version and also included with ToS2 (which is a nice bonus).

Many people dislike ToS2. I still think it's worth playing, also because it was my first To ever.

The 3DS solely has Tales of the Abyss, which I highly, highly recommend. It is a fantastic game, and it stands as the game I have spent the most time in. Everything about it had me hooked: the characters, the story, and the combat. The graphics are alright, but I felt that everything else about the game really made up for it.

The PS3 also has a ton of Tales games. Vesperia, Symphonia Chronicles, Xillia, and Graces. I might recommend Symphonia first, as that game is what got a lot of others into the series, and I think from that it might be the easiest game to get into. The Tales series has a unique combat system, and although it slightly differs from game to game, generally it'll be easy to play all of them the more used you get to it.

My first Tales of was the censored version of Tales of Phantasia on the GBA. Man those were times. I don't dislike ToS2 it is just not as good as the original. My favorite is up to this date Tales of the Abyss.

I haven't playied ToP since I don't own a GBA but Abyss was a great game. I have to say my favorite to date is Xillia 1/Graces F, I can'd decide. I kinda liked the gameplay of Graces F a bit more than Xillia but story and characters wise Xillia wins for me, even tho Graces F had Pascal. Everyone loves Pascal.

All the "Tales of" games I've played through so far are amazing. I've only beaten Abyss on 3DS, but I also own Graces F and Xillia for PS3. And Abyss has the most play time as well on my 3DS cuz thats how amazing it is. But from what I've played of Graces F and Xillia, they both seem pretty good as well.

The Tales games are great.I'd recommend starting with Tales of Xillia,it as the best story of the serie in my opinion and its the easiest Tales I've played.

WARNING: Long post incoming.

On 3DS, there is only Tales of the Abyss. Personally, it's my favorite in the series, but its also one of the most divisive among the fan-base. The characters and storyline are pretty much a "love them or hate them" thing, and there is quite a bit of back tracking near the end of the game. Pretty much any other complaint can simply be attributed to its age (like graphics). The battle system was great (and despite the many games that came after and improved it, I still think it did some things better), there's quite a bit of content, and if the story and characters click for you they're both superb.

For PS3 you've got a few options:

Graces f: The most difficult of the Tales games that I've played, and it's battle system is unique in the series. It's pretty well known among the fan-base for having a terrible story, but honestly I didn't think it was that bad (it's just got a lot of the "power of friendship" stuff, kinda like KH). It's an updated Wii game, which shows at points, but I personally think it looks pretty good (I like the art style).

Symphonia HD: Out all the options, this one is more old school. It's the oldest, and it shows. It's some what chibi styled, and I believe it only runs at 30FPS (if you care about that, I don't really but I know that some people are bothered by it). Unlike all the other games I have mentioned (or will mention), you don't have true 3D movement in battle, even though battles take place on a 3D field. The story I personally didn't find that interesting, but it's one of the more popular ones in the series. The characters are decent. The dungeons in this game are more puzzle based than all others on this list, though, which can be good or bad depending on the person. Overall, pretty good game, but hasn't aged all too well.

Symphonia Dawn of the New World: Comes packaged with the original Symphonia. It's okay, but definitely the worst of those available on the PS3. You don't have a traditional party in this game, instead there's a monster capturing and training system. The story's okay, the characters are decent. Unfortunately, all the original cast from Symphonia cap at level 50, while the two new characters go to like 200 (monsters as well). Again, this is a port of a Wii game. Just an okay game, nothing more.

Xillia: Pretty decent storyline (though it reminds me of Symphonia in a few ways) and good characters. Probably the most graphically impressive. Lightest on content though (excluding Symphonia 2), which is disappointing. A lot of the dungeons don't really feel like dungeons, more just areas to be traversed (might just be me though). The combat is fun, but definitely the easiest, only the bosses will over really pose any sort of threat, while most common enemies can fall to button mashing. Good enough game.

Xillia 2: I haven't beaten this one yet, but the story seems promising so far. Most of the assets are straight from Xillia, which is kinda eh. The battle system is more fun than Xillia, but seems to be just as easy. There's a debt system that hinders your progress, but it isn't too much trouble so long as you take on "Job" sidequests, most of which can be completed just while walking to a new location. The beginning is pretty slow.

Vesperia: Only has a Japanese PS3 release, so you'd have to import and, obviously, be decent with reading Japanese. Its probably the most content rich, has a colorful cast of characters, and a great battle system. Story is lackluster.

TL;DR I'd personally recommend Abyss and Graces f.

Never liked it, title always angered me. Tales of what? How can a game series have an unfinished subject in the name? Talk about lazy.

i'm just joking lol

Symphonia is hella dated, even with the HD remaster. Based on my personal experience of starting and not getting into any of them, Tales of Xillia is probably the most like what you're after.

I've only played Tales of the Abyss on the 3DS.

It wasn't something I liked nor could recommend. I bought it purely on how much praise the series got and a few trailers. Never have I been more disappointed in spending €45 on a game before. The gameplay was meh and the characters annoyed me. I haven't played any Tales of games on the PS3 so I cannot comment on them.

On the plus side, I traded in Abyss to fund a Fire Emblem: Awakening purchase.

Xillia ones are the most polsished, but it might hinder your ability to enjoy earlier entries

like it;s hard for me to go back to Symphonia after Xillia because of all the small tweaks that make the game more enjoyable
