Film The Spongebob Movie: Sponge out of Water

Recommended Posts

Spongebob hasn't been funny sense like Season 3 and the movie. It's just stupid, unfunny ad I can't believe in saying this but... To freakin' gay. I mean my mom always said that and I just ignored but I slowly realized it... Mainly because I noticed how terrible shows were on Nick, CN and DC

Doesn't really look too bad. Turns out the original creator of the series, Stephen Hillenburg, actually helped write this movie so maybe that's why it didn't look terrible to me.

Judging by everybody else, I think you and I are the only ones that get that.

I'm extremely excited for this movie. I'll admit that I was really skeptical when they announced it using a still image of them in their Superhero forms, but after watching the trailer last night, it looks to be one of the best Spongebob experiences ever.

Personally, I haven't watched SpongeBob since I was what? 8 or 9? I've heard It's shit now but this movie looks quite good to be honest.

Spongebob still has his flare. Most people who shit on it are usually the equivalent of Genwunners for Pokemon. I've watched Spongebob since the first episode, and newer episodes never drop my amusement.  The movie looks good to you, because it's running the same Spongebob formula you've known since Episode 1 of Season 1.

Not really, Hero. The first three seasons of Spongebob, when Stephen Hillenburg was the show runner and head writer, focused on using dark comedy while at the same time appealing to kids with the silly characters, bright colors, and shenanigans and appealing to adults with parent jokes and hidden jokes that only parents and adults can understand. After those three seasons and the movie, Paul Tibbit took over and turned up the dark comedy to 11 and decided to use more cringe comedy as well, at the expense of dumbing down both the characters and the scenarios they take part in. I admit, it didn't start to drop in quality immediately, but it worked its way down slowly. I stopped watching in 2011.

HOWEVER, even with all that said, the trailer does show some promise that the Hillenburg style of writing will be returning in the movie's script, and hopefully it can find a way to mesh with Tibbit's style of writing and produce a good movie.

It doesn't seem any different to me.

I'm not sure if Spongebob should really undergo serious analysis for its comedic value. :P

Hey, this show wasn't made by four year olds. It was made by adults. Adults who understand comedy. And just because its a cartoon doesn't mean it doesn't have anything that can be taken seriously or deserve analysis.

I'm just saying that it ruins the comedy, in my opinion. It's why you never explain the joke when you tell one, because it ruins the joke. This has nothing to do with who made it or what form of show it is.

You have to at least know why the joke is funny or why it works before you even tell it. Or be able to understand it. Because then, its not funny. Its just stupid.

My point IS: The writing of Spongebob was good at the start, then starting getting terrible later on. Hopefully this movie will rectify that and bring a much better style of comedy that it once had years ago. And yes, Hero, it DOES have to do with who made it or what form it is, because that determines whether or not this movie will be good or whether it will be CRAP.

I dunno, some people like it that way. My cousin was just telling me last night that he loved Spongebob for how stupid it was. If you can't tell why a joke is funny, but others are laughing, it's best it's never explained as it ruins the purpose of the joke. Take anti-jokes for example. They're funny because they're not jokes, but if I ever had to explain to someone why a realistic situation is funny because of the context I used it in, it'd completely ruin the joke.

It's not supposed to be stupid, though. It's supposed to be smart, in a way. Its supposed to be able to appeal to both kids and adults without resorting to gross out gags or overdone dark comedy. The old writing style was superior to the current one because of that.

Nickelodeon is only doing this to regain their old fans. They've lost a few over the years due to the low quality of their new material, and I think this is a final effort to make some money before the show tanks completely.
