Shulk 8,623 Posted December 21, 2014 The rules of this thread are simple: You must go through all seven of the KH games (Chi not included) and say not only what you like about them, but also what you dislike. Most people tend to ignore one or the other, so I figured this would be a fun game to play on the forums. Try to keep the same amounts of pros/cons for each game if possible, but if you can't, that's fine. Also, keep in mind this is purely opinion based. Don't tell anyone they're wrong, because they're simply going off of their opinion. I'll start: Kingdom Hearts I Pros One of the few strategic games in the series in terms of gameplay The story was nice and simple, but still my favorite Cons Atlantica's controls were bad The Final Mix version made synthesis far more boring and frustrating than it had to be. Kingdom Hearts (Re)Chain of Memories Pros Most strategic gameplay in the series due to the card system preventing button mashing Sora's plot was really interesting Cons The gameplay took a lot longer to master than in the other games Some of the bosses were just plain frustrating (Marluxia in GBA, Vexen in PS2) Kingdom Hearts II Pros The gameplay was fast paced and a lot of fun Introduced a lot of cool gameplay mechanics that should have returned at some point (Drive forms, team attacks, etc.) Cons The action-oriented gameplay sapped a lot of the strategy out of the game Reaction commands were overused and made the game way too easy Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days Pros Getting to play as the other Organization members in Mission Mode was a cool concept Some of the bosses were kind of fun Cons The gameplay was incredibly boring and was mostly mashing the A button I wanted to see more of the other Organization members, but instead, a new one was tossed in so the game could focus just on Roxas and his friends. Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep Pros Getting to see the game from the perspective of three different characters was really nice Different gameplay styles for each character made it feel more varied and fun Cons Going through the same areas three times got really repetitive The Command Boards were incredibly annoying, especially since they were required for 100% Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded Pros The gameplay had the most variety in the series I absolutely loved the turn-based segment at Olympus Colisseum Cons The post-game involved a lot of grinding to reach the levels suggested for the bonus system sectors The Avatar System Sector took too long to build, especially if you didn't know anyone with the game. Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance Pros Flowmotion was a lot of fun in combat, and made getting around a lot more entertaining to look at I personally think this one had the best usage of commands in battle. Cons As much as I like Flowmotion, it had a tendency to make it too easy to get to places that would have been more rewarding to reach in a normal method The story had a lot of retcons/plot points that just felt off So, that's what I've got. You don't have to be very specific, I was pretty general with mine. 2 liamaru and Demyx. reacted to this
Cucco 1,907 Posted December 21, 2014 (edited) Kingdom Hearts I Pros: Best Disney/FF mashup to date, the crossover felt seamless and disney was integrated into the story. Exploration was the best in this game, in most of the other games it just felt like you were running along a disney themed level and nothing more. In this because of the exploration it feels like you are part of one of the films. Most nostalgic KH game to me. Heartless and Maleficent were menacing. Cons: As you said, the FM synthesizing was bullshit. Atlantica felt kind of wonky The FM recolors hurt me right in the nostalgia. Kingdom Hearts CoM Pros: The card system was fun and brilliant, and was the best possible way to make a KH game with such limited controls as the GBA. Felt like reliving KHI but handheld and with a different kind of charm. The Story is one of my favorites in the series. Holy shit those GBA FMV's how even did they do that. Cons: I really hate the difficulty of some bosses. Riku's duel system in Re:CoM sucked dick. Re:CoM in general is not as special as GBA CoM. Kingdom Hearts II Pros: Best story in the series hands down. Combat took the spotlight in this game. The boss battles were more fun than ever. The Roxas segment is still one of my favorite things about the series. Best Characters. Collectibles in FM were so fun. Oh shit that music. OH SHIT THAT 2.5 MUSIC. FF is awesome in this, especially Auron. Cons: Disney worlds no longer felt special, and there was little to no exploration. Dolan and Gooby were no longer interesting. They were no more than party members. Disney just wasn't a focus in this game it seems, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days Pros: Roxas and Axel are my favorite KH characters so it's cool how they got the spotlight. The feels man. More mature story than the other games at the time. Felt like bbs before bbs came out. You get to control oh so many characters. Cons: The 1.5 movie does not give the game justice. Missions were kind of tedious. Kingdom Hearts BBS Pros: Felt like a PS2 game in the palm of my hands The story was even more mature than 358/2's story Battle system was fun. Lilo and Stich world. 'Nuff said. The feels man. Cons: Felt kind of short. Each world is like 15 minutes long. Command Boards were so frustrating. Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded Pros: Fun gameplay for the most part. Worlds felt fun. Hey you actually get to explore shit again like in KH1. Cons: Story was 90% inconsequential Tries to be a DS clone of KH1 but feels almost nothing like that game. I had a fair share of framerate problems. Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance Pros: Fantastic combat Great Music TWEWY cameos Worlds felt very exciting and alive, which I didn't feel from a KH game since KH1. Flowmotion was exciting. Cons: Some of the Story stuff like time travel felt shoehorned in. Why the firetruck does Lea need a keyblade. Why is Riku doing his darkness bullshit again, like really I thought this was settled in KH CoM/II Sora has reached new levels of dumbass never seen before The experience is kind of hampered if you have a vanilla 3ds like me, but that's not so much a problem with the game itself. Camera sucked unless you had the add on. Edited December 21, 2014 by Cucco 2 Agucsoccer and RoxSox reacted to this
RoxSox 3,593 Posted December 21, 2014 (edited) KH1: Pro - The integration with disney worlds is still the best the series has seen thus far. The gameplay in my eyes still holds up. The worlds had a lot to see and do, and it has a character to it that seems to be missing from the other KH games. Final Mix Exclusive Pros: Honestly I'm not sure how much the Final Mix really did to enhance the experience of KH1. Really, it was the enhancements of the HD ReMIX that did a great deal to make it an improved experience. The Xemnas battle was decent I suppose. I like the recolors of the heartless. Con - Sometimes the level design was questionable. Mostly present in Hollow Bastion, Atlantica, and Monstro. There was a very odd quality to a lot of the dialogue sometimes. Final Mix Exclusive Cons: yeah the synthesis was bullshit. COM/RE: COM: Pro - the story is amazing Con - Literally everything else. The gameplay is terrible. KH2: Pro - The story is fantastic, this is the game where Kingdom Hearts established its own identity as opposed to "that final fantasy disney game". The gameplay is wonderful, and it's got a lot more strategy to it than people give it credit for. I don't find it to be a button masher at all, and I don't find reaction commands to make things too easy. Final Mix Exclusive Pros: the wealth of additional content thrown in with the Final Mix version easily makes up for the weirdness of its cons, making it, I think, the quintessential Kingdom Hearts game. Con - The intergration with the disney worlds in this game is really really offputting. There are just a lot of awkward interactions with the Disney characters, and generally it was just executed poorly. Primary examples for this weird weird Disney integration are of course Atlantica, and Port Royal. Just strange choices. BBS: Pro - Keeps up KH2's trend of a very impressive story that stands on its own. The disney integration is getting closer to its roots, with much fewer awkward interactions and strange shit. The characters are all good. Con - This is the game where the Final Fantasy aspects pretty much entirely disappeared. Zack was there, annnnnnnnd that's all I can think of. It was kind of sad to see pretty much nothing on that front, especially when the game takes us to the time and place where the Hollow Bastion Restoration Comittee should have been. DDD: Pro - The gameplay is on point, combining the best of a lot of the series so far into a very tight package. I like the story, I'm okay with the dream eaters. Con - Again, the worlds are getting closer to how they were in KH1 in terms of exploring them, but they are largely empty. I liked the story, but I won't deny that there is a fair deal of strangeness there. Days: Pro - A nice story that stands mostly on its own while still giving another dimension to what we saw take place in KH2. Organization XIII moogle. Con - A nice story... that stands mostly on its own. Days doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Also the gameplay was very odd, and the pacing of the missions was firetrucking awful. Panel system was a joke. Pretty much no Final Fantasy whatsoever save the Organization Moogle. re: coded: Pro - Nice gameplay. Con - The only entry of the series where there is some validity to saying it's a spin off, or pointless. Aru Akise 2,540 Posted December 21, 2014 Kingdom Hearts I Pros The game was very good at putting you in the mood. I could feel the tension in Hollow Bastion and The End of the World. Cons Attacking enemies from afar... You had to stick close or use that sliding ability which I hated. Kingdom Hearts (Re)Chain of Memories Pros Most strategic gameplay in the series due to the card system preventing button mashing Sora's plot was really interesting Cons The gameplay took a lot longer to master than in the other games Kingdom Hearts II Pros Dual Wielding. Roxas. Cons The Org XIII looked a lot weaker than in CoM. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days Pros Playing as the Org. XIII members and getting to... "socialize" with them? Cons DS. Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep Pros Diabolical schemes by Master Xehnny.Cons The plot device used - misunderstanding - was kinda stupid. Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded Pros Secret Ending. Data Roxas. Cons DS.Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance Pros Sora fell into Darkness. Cons Story. Game is too short. Although it was Nomura's intention, flowmotion made it too easy to reach everywhere. Kingdom Hearts χ[chi] Pros It's canon. Haters gonna hate. Cons It's only in japanese. (not a con for me, but I think about you guys *3*)
Dracozombie 4,554 Posted December 21, 2014 I'll only list the games I've played myself. Kingdom Hearts 1: Pro: Simplest and cleanest (lulz) self-contained story, Sora's personality is at its most balanced. Pro: Disney worlds were actually relevant. Con: Clunky and relatively unrefined controls. Con: Fairly black-and-white in terms of theme. Not inherently a bad thing, but the light = nothing but good and dark = nothing but bad is a cliche at this point. Kingdom Hearts 2: Pro: Fast, clean controls. Has my favorite Sora design-wise and vocally. Pro: The start of KH standing on its own merits instead of relying on the FF/Disney crossover. Introduces Roxas (though that's not a pro for everyone...) and shows him at his most "normal," imo a treat after you've played Days. Con: Combat is fun but it's at the expense of exploration. Disappointing since KH's refined controls coincided with a game where there's nothing to do with it but fight. Con: Plot has less of a clear driving force. It's supposed to be "Find Riku" but then there's the Organization and Nobodies Heartless and Maleficent's doing things too and ehhh what's going on again? Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days: Pro: Expanded on Roxas's past and cleared up his relationship with Axel and the rest of the Organization. It's the most I wanted from that game. Pro: Grid system is surprisingly fun. It forces you to optimize if you wanna get by. Con: I don't hate Xion and her bashers can get annoying, but she was boring to me as a character. Con: Combat downgraded to KH1's clunkiness in addition to having to use the DS's directional pad in a 3D game. Playing on the 3DS makes it better, but still. Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep: Pro: Deck commands are the most fun I've had with a KH mechanic. Pro: Expanded on the franchise's mythology. It's not a pro for everyone but I like the idea of Keyblade wielders being a knighthood. To me it makes the Keyblade even more special -- since there used to be thousands, the ones who are still around are practically an extinct species. Con: TAV reeeeeally did not do a good job solving the plot. Con: Firetruck Master Xehanort. 3 RoxSox, Cucco and Demyx. reacted to this
Psychic_Ketchup 367 Posted December 21, 2014 KH1 Pro - Great story, overall atmosphere is terrific, you feel like you're actually exploring Disney worlds. And of course nostalgia. Final Mix Pro - Combat got a lot smoother, with different attacks and finishers. Con - Platforming is pretty awkward, and without FM, so is the combat. Chain of Memories Pro - Love both stories. Gameplay is quite ingenious. Con - Gameplay is also really annoying. Riku talks too much about smelling darkness. KH2 Pro - Moving around and combat is improved greatly from KH1. Main plot is great, especially coming towards the end. Final Mix Pro - Puzzle pieces and the Cavern of Remembrance give the game much needed platforming and exploration. Con - I felt less involved and invested in the Disney world plots. You're not going to these worlds to save them from darkness (like KH1), but to find people and the way forward. Days Pro - Playing as Organization members is awesome. Con - Combat is tiresome, fighting enemies feels like a chore. Gathering intel is the absolute worst. BBS Pro - Exploration returns, albeit slightly. The command deck and command style system is my favourite syle of combat of the entire series. Mark Hamill and Leonard Nimoy are awesome voice actors. Con - Terra has a really hard time detecting evil, even when it's painstakingly obvious. The fact that Unversed respawn when you leave the zone may be good for grinding, but it makes me get sick of them really quick. I would put the Command Board in here, but I actually recently got into it and now I think it's kinda (same with Ice Cream Beat). Coded Pro - Command deck. Platforming is pretty good. Customizing almost every part of your fighting style is kinda cool. Con - Story is practically filler. Going back to each world after losing all your power to reclaim it again is utter horse shit. DDD Pro - Flowmotion is awesome. It makes getting around quicker and gives another option in combat. Con - The plot gets needlessly complex at times. I know Sora is kinda the loveable idiot, but come on, when something is obviously a trap, don't fall for it again and again. Chi I know way too little about it to formulate an informed opinion. Minori 20 Posted December 21, 2014 Have only played 4 of them, and its sad because I heard very good things about 358/2 days. I've even watched someone play it but not actually own it / play it myself. KH1: Pro - The exploration of disney worlds. The Creativity and the all around background. Con - I found it a bit too, simple. They just made it too simple in which there wasn't much "thinking" and strategy with it because most of it at least, was handed to you. Maybe thats just me. KH2: Pro - The Story Line was great and the all in all character development I really enjoyed. Con - There wasnt as much adventure as I thought there would be. It was moreso combat and not enough exploring. Not that I don't mind combat, but I kinda suck at the boss fights...heh. KH Re:Coded Pro - The Customization for your fighting style was nice, I suppose. Con - I honestly got bored. Especially at some parts when it went to 2D. The Game felt like it was dreading on and on. KH Dream Drop Distance: Pro - In general I liked the gameplay. It was to the point. Straightforward. Con - Felt a bit like...KH1 really. Felt like it was a blast to the past. Except with dream eaters which I wasn't big into and wasn't a complete fan.
IwasBornAsVentus 396 Posted December 22, 2014 (edited) Kingdom Hearts l Pros - I very nice combination of FF and Disney characters mixed together. Really good voice actors. Sora was an enjoyable character to play as. The story is simple and enjoyable but feels very new and is strong. I really enjoyed the fact that the disney villains gathered. Cons - I did not really enjoy the world choices of this game Wonderland, Hundred Acre Wood and Monstro was a nightmare. Also some worlds felt very out of place from their movies and seemed to serve more as prequels. Playing as Sora could be very slow and could often lead to being killed by enemies. Way to many frozen faces with dialogue. Kingdom Hearts Re Chain Of Memories Pros - It was nice to be introduced to new characters like Namine, Axel and the organization. The story was really moving. Once again loved Namine and Axel. Cons - I was not a fan of the cards I died way to many times and the gameplay soon became pretty boring. Rehashed worlds I did not like from KH1. Kingdom Hearts 2 Pros - My favourite game so far I pretty much love everything about this game. The story I really really like. The characters I fell in love with all returns in KH2 and introduced to a new awesome character Roxas. I really liked the fact that Roxas was playable the in the beginning and that we were introduced to a very calm and peaceful town like Twilight Town. I liked That Mickey would show in some battles to help you win a fight. Some people blame that the game was to easy but I enjoyed every second of the gameplay more than I did in KH1 and COM. I think this is the best worlds in a game so far so many worlds from KH1 that returned had new beautiful areas and detail with npc's wandering around so that it for once felt like you were in a world. I enjoyed a second visit for some worlds and think that this should continue for KH3. Cons - Don't have any without the fact I was dissapointed that Atlantica that was originally going to be a fighting again turned into a musical world. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days Pros - It was nice to play as other organization members and Mickey, Goofy and Donald. Xion was actually a really sweet new character with a very sad story that I liked and thought was sad. It was nice to see the meaning of Roxas and Axel's friendship. Cons - As most people being saying the gameplay became really boring after a not to long. Way to many ice cream breaks. Slow story. Rehashed worlds again. Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep Pros - This game has in my opinion the best story out of all the games so far. Introduced to a new trio was very nice. Ventus. The varies of worlds was really nice. Some of the worlds was really well detailed and followed their movie appearances. Neverland was more like Dreamland. Awesome villains. Fun gameplay both for fighting and mini games in Disney Town. Love the music. This game is very impressive and offers a lot. Cons - However in some worlds there were way to many blocks to allow you to explore big areas like Enchanted Dominion Terra, Aqua or Ventus cannot jump out in the lake or jump up to cliffs. In Castle Of Dreams no one can enter Cinderella's mansion. Pretty much the whole area in Thebes is blocked. Very embarrassing quotes like the one in the ballroom there is no one there or the coliseum we hear applause but there is absolutely no one there seriously they could have just added some npc's and the problem would be solved. I was dissapointed that Ventus or Aqua could not fight against Master Xehanort but that's my opinion. Kingdom Hearts Re Coded Pros - I liked the gameplay as Sora kinda cool story at least it was enjoyable Cons - Rehashed worlds again Seriously Square Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance Pros - It was nice with flow motion. The story mostly gave answers to questions we being asking for. It was cool to play as Riku. Dream Eaters were a nice variety. Cons - The worlds were way to empty and didn't feel like worlds besides Fantasia perhaps. Lack of npc's and character development. A very confusing plot and what's new oh no not time traveling. Sora I was really dissapointed on Sora's development it felt like with KH2 and even Re Coded Sora was actually not naive or stupid but in Dream Drop Distance he was so different as a character that I actually wanted to play more with Riku who had changed a lot and become very developed as a character. BlankShell 638 Posted December 22, 2014 I'll omit Days and Re:Coded (and X[Chi]) since I'm partway through the former and have never played or seen the latter. KH: Pros *Quirky-fun Disney worlds *Accessible but rewarding gameplay *Killer voice acting and visuals (for the time) Cons *Poor explanation of mechanics in the intro (like the leveling up changes and combat styles) *Perhaps retrospective, but feels somewhat limited. It's pretty short (but sweet). *Atlantica controls could have been better, but it's still nice that they tried. KHCoM Pros *Adorable sprites! *Crazy gameplay Cons: *Certain mechanics don't make much sense *Somewhat binary winning system; very few "clutch" rescues Re:CoM: Pros *Good adaptation of a GBA game *Simple, but effective graphics *Riku's story was a nice change of pace... Cons *... but didn't feel as rewarding/meaningful *Completionism is a bitch KHII: Pros *Fun stories, more varied world exploration *So much content; a really expansive game *Interesting themeology Cons *The static character animations often interrupt what would be a really emotional scene. *Riku *Reaction Commands; they can be used to really good effect, but they're generally either cheap or frustrating to use. KHBBS: Pros *Command Decks/Melding *Three interlocking tales that create unique exploration and explore really interesting ideas *Command Board (that's right, I went there) *Voice acting: Everybody gives it their all, here, and that's appreciated Cons: *Really depressing ending *2D Keyblades KHDDD: Pros *Great visuals *Makes excellent use of 3DS capabilities *Keeps the command decks from BBS *DREAM EATERS Cons *Time travel: Not necessarily as the plot device, just that it makes everything a lot weirder (why are they younger??[/s]) *Feels incomplete: A killer game to play, but it really does feel more like a prequel/interquel to KH3 rather than a standalone title *Some of the trophies are a bit ridiculous *Not much postgame content

Jermaine 79 Posted December 22, 2014 Kh1 Pros +My favorite game +Simple and clean( someone used it up earlier, but hey that was my joke) +Consistent plot throughout the whole story. The later games really falter on this. +Exploration +Hub world, Traverse Town was very central throughout the whole game. +Balance of humor, and struggle. Actually feels real. One of the moments that sticks out to me is when he's staring off into the distance, and thinks of Kairi's story of inspiration. +Actually has puzzles and exploration Cons -Basic gameplay -Holds up, but has kind of aged -Final boss is disappointing, considering the build up KH COM Pros +Most unique story in series. Neptune Vasilias 340 Posted December 22, 2014 I've personally found nothing wrong with the series except for the Card System of COM and the terrible Mission Design of Days but everything else for me felt new and refreshing to the KH series and has its place....actually one more complaint, Sora in DDD was an idiot and I'm happy he didn't become a Master because his actions throughout the game clearly showed his weakness as a Keyblade Wielder of Light

Anonn0000 3,525 Posted January 1, 2015 I sorta disliked having a dream eater named dawnie in kh3d at first and that sorta made me dislike the game for awhile a bit *shocker!* espesally cuz you can't change the names Yeah, i don't like being reminded of the net too much when i'm not online, i guess....though it seems to be bothering me a lot less now, somehow. maybe cuz i try to....think about it less now? maybe. or i try to think i'm 'dawnie' outside the net somehow too or...something. I duno. I like how riku has a lot of story in kh3d, tho. And his quotes i've seen so far are awesome He also looks kinda younger and less hot and sexy in the dream world, but thats okay, cuz maybe it'll test how much of a true fan i am in the end outside my fangirling I like that too i think. Overall theres what i like and don't like about kh3d so far. Not sure how to rate the other games though....and i'd probably have to think too much to come up with an answer and i'm too emotionally unstable to think a lot pretty much, thinking in genneral can make me find fault with things too easily so i tend to avoid it. Unless its something thats just easily in my reach at the moment lol
