KHBbS A few issues I have with Birth by Sleep

Recommended Posts

I have only played a couple of hours but I already have a few problems with the game.

Field of view is too small. I can't see what's going on around me when I'm fighting enemies because the character is taking almost a third of the screen. I know it was a handheld game but I think they should have done something about it.

Like in KH2 the loading times are just awful. While the loading times between zones aren't that bad, using D-links is taking forever. Seriously Square where is the install option?

The music sounds fine but it's a shame the soundtrack didn't get re-orchestrated like KH2.

All problems aside I'm enjoying the game and it looks surprisingly good, much better than I anticipated.

Squares just Lazy.. With how crappy KH looks as a modern game the least they could do is just have them fully animated when up close

1. It's a PSP game. It has mote limitations than the PS2 games.2. Their faces usually are fully animated up close.I wouldn't say Square is lazy, but rather stupid for releasing the game on a system that was at the time 15 years old (compared to computers, and also inferior to consoles that old in many ways). They did however use the PSP to its fullest extent allowed by Sony. For some reason they don't allow people to use the PSP's power to the maximum. For reasons like this, BBS sucks. But they released the game on the PSP because they know how shitty it is and wanted to get the game over with quickly so they can reserve time for games that take 15 years to finish. So yeah, they are lazy. They obviously have no idea and/or lazy with fixing the D-Links and Drive forms. The drive forms taking forever was not in PS2. Edited by Drones

BBS does not suck, and to say they just wanted to get the game over with is presumptuous, especially since it took 3 years to make, which is normal for game.development and game production never takes 15 years, even with the delays FFXV got. Your post started off so well. To see it devolve into an opinion picece that so openly claims the state of mind of a studio all the way on the other side of the world without any evidence to support it is just sad. You can dislike the game, but don't pretend to know anything about its development. On that note, any proof to back up that claim about Sony?

As above said, they do animate when up close most of the time. And ask any animator for any company, and they will say what I said. It is a difficult profession. Even Disney animators have said that, and they are among the elite. Perhaps if they had more facial animators on these games there would be more facial animation. Also, hard to call it a modern game when the whole series has been made for just about any system that is not PS3/4, Xbox 360/One, or PC. The games were up to date on th e systems they were made for, and the art style gets much praise for aginger better than more realistic games. Edited by Andrew Rowland

Everyone who's modded the PSP knows they can make it faster.... you want proof, install a coder. And given the weight of Birth By Sleep, releasing it on PSP was a bad decision and if they would have done it properly on a home console they would've had to stop development on XV.Th

The art style is a mix between American cartoons and Japanese anime I don't know what you're talking about. But for this reason animation should be prioritized. The characters don't look like this in the movies.

True, all true. And I brought up the art style because I think the graphics are exceptional for a PSP game. Yeah, it was still on PSP, but PS2 was already on its last legs, commercially, and PS3 carried high expectations.

I honestly would have rather had Square taken their time fixing everything and making look great vs. the mediocre quality we've gotten. Taking out more time to fix things like animation and even re-orchestrated BBS would have made the experience so much different.

Oh, thank god, I thought it was my system DX

@Topic: pretty much this. Slow loads, music is meh...

Is alright though

It's one thing to fix an existing animation and something else entirely to make a new one.

They didn't need to re-orchestrate BBS OST for a simple reason: Audio quality was just fine.

KH2 got a poor audio quality since the game is 8 years old, so they needed to reorchestrate OR remaster the musics (just like they did with 1.5), so I got nothing to complain about this.

The camera itself is good, but KH2's field of view is way better indeed.

Aaaand D-Links' load time is very very frustrating. You can't even do the pause thing to load it faster. But I guess that's not a problem for me.

Agreed, KH2 definitely needed it, and BBS works fine without it. However, if you're picky (like myself unfortunately), there's a big difference between fake and real instruments. The soundtrack still sounds great as usual, it just would have been interesting and pretty cool if they were able to do BBS.
