Short Story I'm working on! "The Chronicles of Ley"

Recommended Posts

Vane and I were traveling further and further into the woods when I heard a rustle in the bushes, my body reacted immediately, turning toward the disturbance “Come out! Now!” I shouted. Vane aimed his bow at the bush as a tall pale figure quickly revealed itself.  It was a mere man, dressed in torn and shredded clothing, nothing like the padded leather armor everyone was required in Borken to wear. The man had long black ragged locks that draped down to his waist and was clutching a bundled cloth in his arms as if it were some object of great importance.

“What’re you doing out here so late without a proper escort?” I asked, suspicious  The man seemed frightened and didn’t appear to understand me. He was frantically speaking in tongues  I couldn’t understand. Vane lowered his bow suddenly and started communicating with the man in a similar dialect.

“Vane what’s going on? What is he speaking? And how did he manage to get this deep into the woods alive?” I asked.

“He’s speaking in English, Ley. Man, I can’t believe all those ancient language classes paid off! But more importantly he’s asking for help. He says his village was being torn apart by a cyclone and he was running for shelter when he suddenly appeared here.” Vane said, clearly pleased with his own small amount of tact

“Well, this is a peculiar situation. How could this even happen? I thought only seers had the ability to time-jump, and that it was only with proper jurisdiction.” I said in contemplation

“What makes you so sure it was a time-jump, Ley?” Vane asked.

“It’s the only thing that makes sense, and would enable a human from the ancient times to be here at the present.” I said reassuringly.

“Hmm, then what should we do, Ley? I don’t know if I can continue keeping up with this guy, he’s talking rather quick and urgently.”

“Find out where and when he came from. We’re going to have to report this to Atlas immediately.” I said to Vane, realizing that if my hypothesis was correct, this wasn’t a situation that was under my jurisdiction

Vane started questioning the man, but the man was struggling with his breath. He was talking rapidly and with a hoarse tone. What had this man been through? Vane looked at me with a look of exasperated confusion and continued trying to understand the man.

“I thiiinnk he said, ‘he comes from a poem--about the moonlight,’ but I’m not sure. Vane said. “Though I do know he definitely keeps asking for our help.” He added.

“That first part can’t be right. Clearly you need to work a bit on your English.” I said frustrated.

“Hey! To be fair, at-least I can kind of understand him, and he is struggling quite a bit here.” Vane said in defense.

“Well, maybe we can find out more from one of the elders.” I said. “But wait, what’s that he’s holding there?”

Vane started gesturing to the cloth in the man’s arms and continued talking to the man.

The man then got ecstatic and proceeded to repeat the same phrase over and over. The man extended his arms outward while holding out the bundled up cloth that he was carrying.

“Hey what’s he saying? I think he’s gesturing to that blanket. Can you make it out?” I asked Vane perplexed.

“I’m almost 100% sure he wants us to rule over his baby that’s wrapped up in that blanket there. What do you think?” Vane nodded his head toward the bundled up cloth.

“So you think he’s asking us to enslave some random child?” I asked unsure. -----------This is what I have so far, I'm uncertain on if I want to continue with it's momentum, I'm open to opinions!
