Firaga 5,947 Posted October 17, 2014 (edited) So after a quick browse through Crunchyroll, a site I haven't been on in forever because I ain't giving them my credit card info., I noticed a paticular new anime that caught my eye. And another slice-of-life too, so you know this has gotta be something to talk about... The anime in question is Danna ga Nani o Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken, or in English, I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying, originally based off a 4-part manga of the same name. If you don't know what a 4-panel manga is, it's basically like a comic strip but in manga form. The show is very simple really, and that's part of the reason I was able to latch onto it so quickly: the story is about a husband and wife named Hajime and Kaoru. Kaoru is a working class gal while Hajime is an overgrown otaku. We see them going through their daily rituals with their personalities and interests constantly clashing and Kaoru repeatedly embarrassed or even appalled by Hajime's otaku antics. Throw in some fast paced jokes and some random anime goodness, and you have a show. Now the reason I'm following this is because, well, it's very easy to. Like another well-known anime series Hetalia: Axis Powers, ICUWMYHIS has a very short running time; each episode is only three-and-a-half minutes long. And in those three and an half minutes are quick and simple storylines that are easy to follow and have plenty of humor to go around. This show, to me at least, sort of connects to Watamote, another sort of out-of-my-range anime that I've gotten into and completed. The difference is, of course, while Watamote strives to present the otaku-esque lifestyle in a joking manner, using awkward comedy in order to relate to the viewer, this show is more zany and up-front with itself. You might think on the surface that these characters Hajime and Kaoru are just too different to be together, but when you watch the show, you realize that Kaoru is willing to co-exist with Hajime despite his huge character flaws (she's not exactly perfect herself, don't worry) because they truly do love each other. I just think that's a really cool concept, especially since it also plays on the fantasy of a nerdy guy getting a beautiful girl as his wife, with some twists of course. It really makes sense too, considering its a seinen/slice-of-life show. lol The show regularly plays on Saturdays, and there are three episodes available on Crunchyroll right now. The manga I have not checked out yet, but I do know it is on-going and there have been four volumes published so far. So, if you've got some time to kill (a lot of time considering this show doesn't take up too much of it) and you want to have some laughs and maybe take some notes about how you're gonna act when your nerdy self gets hooked up with a hot guy/girl one day in the future, then check I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying out. advfox 698 Posted October 19, 2014 Nice find. I took the time to watch the first three episodes, and I got a few good laughs out of it. 1 Firaga reacted to this
Firaga 5,947 Posted December 26, 2014 Well, the show is over... at least, it was over. Until this happened: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-12-25/i-cant-understand-what-my-husband-is-saying-anime-gets-2nd-season/.82612 That's right, the show is over, but there's a second season around the corner. Good to know. As for this season: the show didn't fail to disappoint. It kept right on going with what it set out to do and I loved it all the same and for the reasons that got me hooked into it when it first started. I'm super curious to see what kind of moments and hi-jinks come for Kaoru and Hajime in the future, with all the wackiness, heartwarming-ness, sadness, awkwardness, craziness, and whatever else in thrown in. Forever 3,550 Posted January 29, 2015 Oh cool, I might have to check this out! I love animes/mangas that can just focus on people and their lives, without everyone having magic powers or some super insane abilities. While that stuff is fine in moderation, there's nothing like a little slice of life to get a good laugh. Like this manga series I love called Yotsuba&! It's about a little girl who's raised by a single father, and all the antics she gets into. It sounds simple, but sometimes simple really is best. 1 Firaga reacted to this
Kyouma-Blade 90 Posted January 30, 2015 I liked this anime a lot. It gave me a slice of life while not making the episodes feel dragged out by making it a short. Hyped for season 2. It made me tear up a bit when they found out they're having a baby. So happy and touching. 1 Firaga reacted to this
Firaga 5,947 Posted June 25, 2015 Probably the only one who still cares but: The second season was just as good as the first one for me. Granted, it didn't really have as many funny moments, but to be fair, it was more focused on Hajime and Kaoru becoming parents rather than the usual schtick of showing off their chaotic relationship. And a lot of those bits were done well. I especially enjoyed getting to see some more backstory on some of the minor characters such as Hajime's brother and getting to meet the rest of Hajime's family. And dangit, I wanted to see Sayoko in the flesh. >_< Oh well. Here's hoping for a third season if possible.
