Kingdom Hearts III is now using Unreal Engine 4

Recommended Posts

I dunno a whole lot about the technical stuff, but the KH engine is over 10 years old. Yeah, it's been used and updated and improved upon, but never for better consoles. After the PS2, they just reused it for portable consoles like the DS, PSP and 3DS. But the PS4 and Xbox One are TWO GENERATIONS ahead of what the PS2 was capable of, and by extension, the portable systems. It just seems like too far a leap to simply upgrade an engine that's been in service since 2002 for systems that are miles ahead of the console that it was originally intended to be used for.

I guess theres that too... But still, they could've atleast used one of their old engines. The Crystal engine isn't that old, I think... They used it for FFXIII didn't they?

It's just that, they have their own stuff yet they use an engine that half the industry uses...

I think they switched to UE4 because its probably easier to develop for and will be quicker than using the Luminous engine. It would have been nice to keep everything inhouse, but i guess decisions like this have to be made sometimes.

There we go again.

first they said the engine is most important and now they change it.

Next they postpone development because of DDD HD.

Then they will return back to PS2 graphics and then they'll cut KHIII.

KHIII, the next FFXV

No. They're done with Crystal Tools. There was so many issues with that engine. And it's only built for PS3 and 360. Not PS4 and Xbox One.

This should be good news. Clearly this engine tested as a preferable choice that they decided was most likely to pay off.

Hmm.. It may end up looking similar to this.

It's also being made on UE4.

That's Cel Shaded. From the looks of things so far, KH3 is gonna be quite different from that.

I just don't get it, why are they always facing such problems although it easily be fixed when it comes to FF games. I just hope that the graphics deserve to have such game on the PS4 not for PS3...

Think of each major project as unique. They actually bring their own technical challenges to overcome, even if it seems bizarre that they're present to begin with.

Not really, I can see them porting DDD HD using UE4 graphics. Like Type0 HD was suppose to get with Luminous but you know Lol

That's good news since Luminous Engine was slowing down the process. Hope they know how to work properly with Unreal Engine 4. The graphics will be amazing! Just hoping that Osaka's Team knows how to fix glitches

square's own engine dev team must be falling behind if the issues with luminous were bad enough that they needed to switch. Though i really have to wonder what exactly was going wrong.

Ah well, hopefully UE4 is flexible enough for them. And maybe it will lead to a PC port.....yeah I know, getting my hopes up too much but still.

As an independent game developer, I too, am very fond of the Unreal Engine. Can't wait to see what they make of this!
