There seems to be a lot of call backs to the first that I don't get. Like a certain reoccurring Knight and all the side quests involve characters from the first game and ends with you fighting one of them

I haven't played Second so I can't really tell.

It's a personal preference, but I like playing in story order whenever possible.

 

Which is what I'm gonna do when 1.5+2.5 comes out

Really you can do what you want

Like with Star Wars people say to watch the various orders they recommend like 4,5,6,1,2,3 or 1,2,3,4,5,6 or some other weird order
