Deja Vu

On an isolated island in the dead of winter, there lies a wooden shack. The rugged building has seen much ware, and one would be surprised to see it standing amidst the blizzards that frequent this land. Beneath the shack, however, lies a series of underground tunnels that lead to St. Lucifer's School for Gifted Children. Though it is hardly school as much as it is an asylum for... yes, "gifted" children. They are hardly prodigious, in the sense that you think of when you hear the word gifted; they are more troubled than anything, insisting that they can replay events of the past at will. However, these children are on the verge of discovering something that will tip the scales of fate in who knows what direction.

It's late into the night of Christmas Eve. Normally, all these children would have to keep warm were the rough wool blankets on their straw mattresses, but tonight, Sister Belle (short for Beelzebub) drank a bit too much and had fallen unconscious before the children were all asleep. Candles were lit, dripping wax in the middle of the room as the children relished this small taste of freedom.

Ren stared at the candel in the middle of the room, catching drop of wax on his finger and letting it dry before flicking it at Rai.

"Do you think we will get presents?" He asked, looking at the others.

He hopped they did, it would make them all rather happier.

"Do we need to? Besides whats the point?" Rai was a little annoyed by the wax tho he didn't show it. Somehow he tried to act adult but usually it didn't work. He brushed of the wax and put his back against the wall.

"Tho it is a little quiet when the hag isn't around." He gestured behind him before sighing. "Well it could be worse ..." That sigh was more sarcastic or maybe just said with a loss for enthusiasm 'Whatever in a fiev years ill just escape this hell hole.' Before continuing the thought he looked around and sighed again.

"So what do you think Ella? And please find a way to stop this depressing atmosphere."

Ella jumped back into reality. "Wh-what?!" It was Rai. She was distracted by the candle. She had been staring into the flame for almost as long as it had been lit. "I... Um... Well... I sort of remember stories of a jolly fat man in red who brought presents to all the kids of the world." She was picking at her sleeves. "I can't remember his name though... And it's been years, I don't think he knows we're down here... Or maybe we've all been too naughty..." So much for lightening the mood.

Alyssa sat in a chair in the corner, her knees clutched to her chest. She didn't say anything, or add to the conversation, but she listened. They were talking about presents, and some sort of fat jolly man. She didn't know. She didn't have too many memories before the school, so any real knowledge of the outside world came from hearing the others talk about it.

Ferro sat with the group around the candles. "The fire of those candles is actually tiny soot and wax particles glowing with heat. It's called black-body radiation." Ferro hoped the group would appreciate that. He had read that in a book somewhere. "Just trying to 'lighten the mood.' Get it?" Ferro cracked a smile.

The door to the childrens' room suddenly burst open. In it's wake stood the hunched, wrinkly figure of Sister Belle, candle lamp in hand. Her facial expression was anything but sober and terrifyingly furious. She glared at all the children all at once, shifting from one to other, but the ice cold feeling never ceasing. The candle in the middle flickered as her freezing gaze shifted to it. "So you like fire, eh?" Her words were slurred, but each one struck with a chill. "Well here!" She threw her lamp at one of the straw beds and it almost immediately went ablaze. Cackling, the old woman slammed the door shit behind her. The sound of the children being locked inside resonated as the mattress crackled and snapped. Smoke filled the room and embers risked igniting other beds.

Rai coughed then put a scarf around his mouth. What on earth was going on? He knew Belle was reta rded, possessed or just plain insane But this was a whole new level. 'Ideas ideas ideas ... Can i even do anything? ... No i'm not letting that hag kill me. Wait that was straw so putting it out would be useless what about the door.' He got on his feet quickly and got to the door ... Locked. hell no this wasn't going to stop him.

"Damn witch wants to kill us! Everyone help me bash this down." He shouted and tried to bash the door down. He was slamming his whole body on it hoping to do some damage. Needles to say its going to be one rough night. His kicks and his ramming himself into the door echoed through the corridor outside. Not now Lucifer is going to have to wait a while longer.

Ella started to panic. She was afraid. Very afraid. A candle was pretty and hypnotic, but a huge fire like this caused her to remover things she didn't want to remember. Then it happened.

Ren sighed, shaking his head."We wont get any presents this year."He muttered, standing up and sitting below Alyssa. "You aren't really funny Ferro." He stated.

Ella shushed everyone. She listened carefully. "Everybody hide!" She whispered, blowing out the candle and darting into bed.

Alyssa could no longer see anything due to the candle being blown out. She considered going to bed herself, but decided against it. She wasn't sleepy, so why would she? Then again, Ella had just warned them to hide... No, she'd be fine. No one would be able to see her curled up in the corner in the dark anyway. Alyssa sat still in the darkness, listening to the slight movements of everybody else.

As soon as he heard Ella tell him to hide, Ferro leaped up and dove into one of the beds. He lay there as still as he could, breathing slowly and rhythmically. There was only one explanation for Ella's strange behavior: something bad would happen if they weren't all in bed, and she had used the power they all shared to rewind time. Ferro waited to see what would happen.
