TV Legend of Korra Question: Numba Wan?

Recommended Posts

Okay, let me begin by saying that Wan is my absolute favorite Avatar. The art direction, world building, story, and character development were so well done in his two episodes, that they can honestly stand on their own without prior knowledge of the Avatar series. So I get a little touchy when people talk smack about him, but... even from the show itself? In order to keep the Spirits and Humans from destroying each other, Wan closed the Spirit Portals and separated them. At the end of Book 2, Korra states that he made a mistake doing that. Later in Book 3, Zaheer proclaims Wan to be foolish for closing the portals, to which Korra gives little defense.BUT HE HAD TO!!!!!!!!!.......right?I always saw the separation between spirits and humans to be similar to the exclusion of freeing the slaves from the Declaration of Independence. It really sucked that it went down that way, but in the grand scheme of things, it had to happen in order to get the ball rolling in the right direction.I don't know, I just hate that the characters are acting like Wan was suppose to do something else, when we clearly saw that he dedicated his whole life to finding peace. What do you think TLOK fans? Am I giving Wan too much credit, or are the other characters just being disrespectful?

Zaheer clearly didn't have his facts right because, yes, he did have to. There was no alternative. It was either that, or Vaatu imposed his 5000 years of darkness upon the world. I wouldn't compare it to the Declaration of Independance, exactly, but I see where you're coming from.

The thing about Zaheer's view on what Wan did, is that Zaheer thinks that chaos IS the natural order of things. Which Vaatu would've put the world into chaos. So of course Zaheer would think it was foolish of Wan to stop chaos.

It was necessary at the time.

side note. I find it interesting that Korra represents both the end of one Avatar Cycle and the beginning of another.

In the finale of book 3 I really thought that without her connection to her previous lives she wouldn't be able to enter the Avatar State at all since doing so allows her to draw on all the knowledge and experience of said lives

I'm pretty sure that she was able to go into the avatar state because while she didn't have the power from past avatars, she still had rava's power. After all, Avatar Wan goes into the avatar state during his adveture while fighting Vaatu

Personally, I think that closing the portals wasn't a good thing, however it was necessary in the long run. Though I do wonder if having the portals open will allow Iroh to come back to the physical world, and if Korra might be able to reclaim her ties to past avatars in the spirit world.

I don't think it's as simple as "Because what one avatar did was right, the other has to be wrong." I think both Wan and Korra did the right thing for their time. Wan closed the portals to keep the spirits safe, but I don't think the world was ready for the portals to be open again until Korra opened them. I don't even think Aang should have opened them. He had a lot on his plate with the Fire Nation.
