Setrex 1,031 Posted September 4, 2014 Ok so there's only two MMORPGs that I've played a lot of to warrant any opinion on. World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. As far as what you are looking for in your list, World of Warcraft pretty much ticks everything bar the anime visuals (though it does have cartoony visuals) and the free to play aspect (however you can play up to Level 20 in a watered down Starter Edition). World of Warcraft for me is the easier to get into than FFXIV. Both games are good at what they do but WoW is a much easier game to get into than it was back in the good ol' days. Nowadays, WoW is creeping up to the release of it's 5th expansion but it's not all bad as the base game now includes 30 days free gametime, WoW and the first 3 expansions. So for $20 you can enjoy all the content up to Level 85. As the 4th expansion is still current for now you can purchase it separately for an additional $10 and enjoy all the content up to Level 90 (which for now is the max level). That's just the basics for now. I'll basically go through your points very simply for WoW, - Able to start and join guilds: Yes you can do both, in fact to create your own guild all you need is 3 signatures from other people and 10g. There are so many guilds in the game and you can search for ones that might interest you (whether you want a RolePlaying guild, a PVP guild, a PVE guild, a social guild or really anything that you fancy). - MMORPG: Yep and it's very extensive with 13 playable races across two factions and 11 different classes to play with each class having 3 (or 4) specs. So really you are spoilt for choice in how you want to play. - Leveling system: Yep it has this, when the 5th expansion comes out you'll be able to play all the way to Level 100 so that's a lot of content. There is also a leveling system for your in-game pets (think Pokemon-esque) in which you can battle/collect/trade your pets. - Currency system: As far as currency goes, there is obviously the Gold/Silver/Copper system which is your main currency but you can also receive tokens and points to buy gear or vanity items. There's more uses for points/tokens but I feel I'd ramble too much on the subject because it'd be terms that you wouldn't understand. - Able to sell and trade items: Unless stated otherwise, items can be sold to NPC merchants, sold on the Auction House or traded to real players. - some kind of free chat like text chat or voice chat (or both): There is an in-game chat bar where you can talk to guild members, shout to everyone in the area, talk to your registered friends, talk in raids/dungeons or battlegrounds, talk in trade chat, etc. There is also voice chat but personally I've never used it so I cannot comment on it. - fairly large community: Despite the game being dooooooooooooooooooomed in terms of subscribers, it currently stands at just below 7 million. It did peak 12 million a few years back though. - good gameplay: Ok so, I think the gameplay is good. Gameplay is pretty much revolved around gathering quests and completing them, it's the main way to earn exp as they have you kill things and play through the story of the game. Dungeons and Battlegrounds are also part of the game. Dungeons/Raids have you team up with other players to go up against the CPU and Battlegrounds have you go up against real players of the opposing faction. Other than leveling your character, you can level professions (Tailoring, Enchanting, First Aid, Fishing, etc.) these can be good ways of making stuff for your characters or it can be good to sell to other players. There is the pet battles and stuff too to keep one busy. The map is pretty big too so there is plenty to explore. In terms of how battling works for your character, it's all in real time and you have spells/attacks that you use. Like I mentioned classes have 3 or 4 specs, 2 of which can be chosen at level 10 and 30 respectively (they can be reset though if you want). It's pretty easy to get the hang of, for example I play a priest and they are healers however I suck at healing so I play the Shadowform spec which is a damage dealing aspect of the Priest class instead. Druids can be healers, tanks and damage dealing classes so if you were playing as a Druid you'd be spoilt for choice in how you want to play. (if you have any questions I can probably expand on this section a bit more, I'm just stuck for how to describe stuff ) - a game i can get into: For me, I think it's an easy game to get into. It eases you into the game early on and it's very easy to get the hang of. It might sometimes feel like a bit of a drag early on as you are limited with what you can do but as you progress it's pretty ok. - anime style (optional): Like I mentioned above, it doesn't have anime style visuals but it does have a cartoon style to it and the world is very nice to look at. - free to play (optional): Unless you are playing the Starter Edition it does have a monthly subscription fee but I personally don't consider it a bad thing. I'm more inclined to play the game if I'm subscribed to it if anything. Ok so I don't think I'll be the best at selling Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Mainly because I play it on PS3 and I feel I'd get more enjoyment out of playing the PC version but sure I'll try any ways. Using your points again, - Able to start and join guilds: They are known as free companies and to be honest, I have never joined one but the are more or less guilds. You can request to join one, be invited to one, etc. - MMORPG: As the Final Fantasy name suggests it is indeed an RPG. Although it isn't turn based like the series is known for, it plays very similarly to WoW with a few of it's own twists. There are 5 races to choose from, there is 9 battle classes to choose from each with their own Job and there are 11 field classes. - Leveling system: Yep there is a leveling system. Currently the max level is 50. - Currency system: The notable currencies in-game are Gil and Seals. - Able to sell and trade items: You can sell items to both NPCs and to players (players can buy through the Market Board). You can also trade with players. - some kind of free chat like text chat or voice chat (or both): There is an in-game chat box for talking to players. I cannot comment on voice chat as I've never tried it but while playing the PS3 version of the game I found it much easier to Skype a friend while playing as unless you have a keyboard you are going to find communicating a nightmare. - fairly large community: The community is a pretty big one, because the world isn't overly huge (in comparison to WoW any ways) and travelling around it isn't all that bad you do notice a lot of players around the world constantly engaged with one another. I can't speak for how nice the community is because I've heard that PC players in general look down on those playing the game on PS3 or PS4, how true this is though I don't know I mainly played through the game with my girlfriend and while we did run into a few nice people here and there we generally kept to ourselves so I cannot speak of how nice it really is. - good gameplay: Ok so FF14 does a lot of things similar to FF11 and WoW in terms of gameplay however there is one thing I did like and stood out about it. You can freely change classes on the same character. Instead of having to create multiple characters to try more classes you can simply switch classes. Say you start off as a Conjurer but are bored of the whole healing thing, you can simply visit the Archer guild and become and Archer as easy as that but you can also freely switch between the two classes if you just want two different ways to enjoy the game. Realistically you can have every class both battle and field at level 50 on the same character (but honestly that sounds REALLY time consuming but hey who am I to judge ). The whole multiple class thing is also the way to unlock Jobs, for example I play Black Mage which is the Job for the Thaumaturge class. However I can only unlock Black Mage at level 30 after I've leveled a Thaumaturge to Level 30 and an Archer to 15. That's more or less the jist of Job unlocking. You can also gain certain abilities for classes by leveling up others, like if you level up a Conjurer you can unlock Cure for other classes which can come in handy as it's a healing spell. - a game i can get into: Ok so I played FF14 in beta and I thought it was a bit difficult to get into. It was enjoyable but the menus were clunky on PS3. The more I played it though the more I got into it and further enjoyed it. It's a game that I feel needs time to be appreciated. It's very easy to get started and it's enjoyable just running around the world. By the time I played the full release I had pretty much got the hang of the game and I think it's easy for people to pick up. It should only take a few hours to get the hang of it I think. - anime style (optional): It doesn't have an anime style to it. It has far more realistic graphics than WoW does and it's more on par to games like Guild Wars 2. Honestly the game is visually amazing. - free to play (optional): Alas there is no free to play model (or not that I know of) and it is a monthly subscription based game. However, when you purchase the game you do get 30 days free regardless of the platform. I personally picked up the game on PS3 for £8 so that on top of 30 days I think wasn't a bad deal to get started (but of course I played the beta so I knew what to expect). There are other MMORPGs out there such as Guild Wars 2 which is requires a purchase but doesn't require a subscription. I've tried free to play games like Aion, TERA and Ragnarok Online 2. Aion and TERA are nice games but the Korean grind aspect of the games make them hard to recommend (but hey look up videos to see if they'd be your cup of tea). Ragnarok Online 2 is an anime styled MMORPG and it's on Steam personally I didn't think much of it though. Any ways, long post is long, if you have any questions feel free to ask but I think I sounded a bit like a salesman half the time 1 Sorual reacted to this

wolfsinner 22 Posted September 5, 2014 (edited) I'd have to say Guild Wars 2. It is the most fun MMORPG I've played to date. Quickly: - Able to start and join guilds Check. - MMORPG Check. - Leveling system Check. Also, the skills system is one of the best I've seen in a long time. - Currency system Check. - Able to sell and trade items Check. - some kind of free chat like text chat or voice chat (or both) Check. - fairly large community Big check. - good gameplay Guild Wars 2's gameplay is very dynamic and fast. It requires strategy and/or teamwork, and honestly I'd never played anything like it in a MMORPG. - a game i can get into It depends on you. - anime style (optional) Nope. I like the artstyle quite a bit though. - free to play (optional) It is free to play in the sense that you pay for it once, and you can play it for life. There's no subscription fee, just a one-time payment. I can't recommend any other MMORPG more than Guild Wars 2. I've played FFXIV, and it is quite fun as well but some of its mechanics are very generic. Check reviews for both, they'll help you make a decision.
