Firaga 5,947 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) (Warning: I might fly off the handle on this one. Be prepared.) And yes, I realize the irony of my title... deal with it. Alright, so in our modern society, we've adopted a list of words that are used commonly among today's youth, including kids, teens, and adults (and the elderly if you have, like, hip grandparents or something). I could name them all right now, but most of these terms are so stupid, me just bringing most of them up would make me puke into my cereal bowl. So I ain't doing it. What I will do is deconstruct one of the words that makes me cringe the most, and surprisingly doesn't make me want to puke: haters. *holds back vomit* Okay, never mind... Blarg, anyways, this term is pretty much something that only the ignorant sort of folk that mostly live in our generation use. Haters, by definition, are people who are "hateful" towards you and serve to criticize you immensely because they simply cannot be happy with your success or your high standards. Already, you should be able to see the immense flaws in this logic. This term is mostly used by rappers and people on the internet, which also proves just how flawed it is. Admittingly, I've used the word too, but only when I want to act like the stupid people that say this word and more on a daily basis... its fun. So here's a secret for you: haters are not REAL. Yeah, that's right, haters are not a thing! These people that claim have haters don't have haters at all! They just have people who criticize their work, because newsflash, not everything you do is gonna be perfect! But no, they have to be stupid and make it sound like people are literally hating their work for the sake of hating. You ever stop to think that maybe they're saying these things because a) they see your flaws and want you to improve upon them to get better or b) in reality, you suck donkey ass at what you do? THINK A LITTLE. Most rappers nowadays are terrible anyway, so that's why they're so prone to not only receive criticism, but use the terms "haters" to defend themselves. You hear it in hip hop and rap songs all the time, by people like Lil' Wayne and Drake and Nicki Minaj: "Forget the haters" "F**k the haters" "I don't need no haters". And then they have their fans back them up and say how awesome they are and how the "haters" are wrong. Here's another NEWSFLASH: You and your dumbass fans are not defending yourselves from criticism when you speak out against "haters", you're IGNORING your own flaws and making yourself look like an arrogant jackass who shouldn't be making music at all!! The same goes for anybody else that uses this term. If you're being criticized for your work, don't assume that people are hating on you. Nobody is going to hate what you're doing just for the sake of hating (okay maybe they will, but they're probably just trolls.). People have reasons to why they're criticizing you, and you need to open your eyes and accept it. Don't ignore it like a pansy ass and brush them off and surround yourself with ONLY people who kiss your ass and say how great you are, because sometimes you need to be told what you're dong wrong so that you can only get better. That's the mature thing to do. So I've said my piece. Do you agree with me, or do you think I'm just "hating" on "haters"... if that's even possible? Nick Sideris 1,551 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) Well , in my country , we don't use the word "haters" . But that's another story. I have to agree with you on the part that "haters" as a word does not mean that there is a specific group of people that actually HATE you . It's more like : they critisize your work , they don't want you dead . The phrase (and I know that you are a WWE fan ) that Triple H says " Evolve or perish" cannot apply on this case . The word "haters" cannot be used in a sentence correctly because it always mixes up the "concept" of the sentence . And I mentioned the above phrase , 'cause people have the trend of using this word nowadays , as you said , in songs etc . I am not sure if what I just said even makes sense but whatever . I agree with you . Edited July 18, 2014 by Nick Sideris 1 Firaga reacted to this
Skhyatze 165 Posted July 18, 2014 Haters is a word that used to describe people who just blindly hate anything and everything that someone or something makes whether or not they actually think it is good or not. They just say it is 100% awful. Looks at the metacritic reviews of some Call of Duty games. You will obviously see the fanboys who give a 10 and you also see the "haters" who post 0's and 1's and call the game the worst thing ever even though a game that actually functions properly like a CoD game deserves more that 0 and 1. With rappers they are talking about the same thing. They are kinda dumb to be honest and don't understand internet jokes well and take people who are obviously joking very seriously. They are people who also blindly hate their music. They have critics which might point out their "flaws" but they don't really listen to that because they already have a ton of fans who enjoy their music so they really don't need to change. You may not like the music but a lot of other do and that is their opinion. Other than that the word is used mostly in a joking manner. Haters do exist whether you want to call them that or not. 2 Mio and MysticVriska reacted to this

Movies798 1,359 Posted July 18, 2014 The only time I ever use the word hater is when people who are jealous on other people. I never use the word hater when people criticized other people's opinions. Like Transformers for example, half of transformers fans talk about how the live action transformers movies have cheap story lines, many flaws, plot holes, focusing too much on the humans characters, not focusing on the Transformers(the real main protagonists), too much human elements, dorky comedy, too much action and explosions, and no character development on the transformers. While the other half of transformers fans talk about how much they love the live action movies and calling the fans haters who just giving their opinions on why they don't like the live action movies. I hate it when people say haters going to hate, because they their just giving their opinions.

Caity 3,946 Posted July 18, 2014 Only reason I don't like the term haters is cause if you give a valid argument or criticism for something (The term haters is given to people who criticize and/or dislike someone or something, mainly seen it with forms of media in my experience), without hating it, just acknowledging it's flaws, instead of being counter argued or have your opinion politely respected, but personally disagreed with or seen as not a big deal, you get "omg ur such a hater y even bother doing -x- lyk omg haterzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz everwhere" 4 Firaga, Reyn, Tigerruss and 1 other reacted to this

MasterRoxas13 340 Posted July 18, 2014 I use that term all the time, half the time its because I am joking, and other times I am being serious. There are times when like you said , people just say it when they are facing criticism but usually people who use that term have at times a valid reason too. Take for example the other night when me and my sister's boyfriend had a debate/argument about One Piece. He went on a rant about how One Piece sucks because they talk about friendship and because he feels like the show is lame. But prior to him watching the show he already had a negative opinion about it BEFORE he even tried it, not only that but many of the so called points he had was things he praised about other anime ( Naruto,HunterX Hunter) , so what does that make him????? A One Piece hater. He hated something before he even started it so he was giving it the horns effect the whole time Haters are people who criticizes things or people without any real constructive criticism that does not contradict their own values, beliefs, or views . 1 Firaga reacted to this

That's the mature thing to do. About the rappers - can you even blame them? People send them death threats if they even breathe wrong. They tell kids who idolize them forget the people who are hating on you - a lot of kids deal with bullies, so if they feel better after listening to a song like that I don't think you have the right to tell them it's dumb. None of those people ignore criticism because they feel like it - they are professional musicians which requires a lot of dedication and constant improvement. But they write off the people who talk shit about them for no reason (there were countless articles mocking Nicki Minaj for buying herself a pink sports car, for example) and these artists are just saying in their songs "screw these rude people who are mean for no reason". I can't even begin to see what's wrong with that. I don't see a lot of people using it in that context, so I think you're really reaching to come up with a scenario. If someone is being given constructive (not rude and pointless) criticism and they reply with "haters" it's usually a joke, and if it's not, they're probably 12. I've used the term haters before when talking about people who bullied me. I know other people who've done the same. 99% of the time people use "haters" to describe people who aren't giving constructive criticism - it's a term usually reserved for rude, bellicose people. The majority of people using the term aren't using it in the way you're suggesting, so you don't really have anything to be mad about imo. 2 Godot and MasterRoxas13 reacted to this

I'm saying they get criticized over every little thing and it'd be impossible for them to listen to everyone's advice, especially since most of it is intentionally mean and it isn't any kind of constructive criticism. 2) Nicki Minaj is a feminist icon who supports girls getting an education and embracing their potential and she has advocated time and time again for her fans to go to college, stay in school, and to cope with bullies because life is worth it. Macklemore writes songs aimed at a young audience and in songs like Same Love he defends gay marriage so that lgbtqiap kids won't be bullied for it. You're dehumanizing these people - someone can rap songs about drunkeness and partying but that doesn't at all mean they're ignorant people who ignore criticism. The fact that they got to where they are in life says the opposite. 3) It doesn't really matter what you think. Other people like it and those artists are working to keep improving, even if you don't like it. It doesn't change the fact that they work hard. You can't be a famous rapper without doing a lot of hard work - tour schedules are grueling, in addition to everything else. These are hard working people and regardless of whether or not you like their music you can't just disregard all of the hard work they put into it. 4) So if 1 in 20 people uses it that way nobody's allowed to use it anymore and it's a dumb word? Okay then. Just let people have their fun, people are kidding 99% of the time when they say it. 5) It really isn't - haters by your definition are present in everyone's life. Why is that one girl from hockey constantly yelling at me and no one else? Hater. Why is Nicki Minaj attacked for painting a sports car pink? Haters. I think it's a silly word, yeah, but "people who hate for no reason" exist. Kind of like you've been hating really hard on rap artists who haven't done anything to you and work hard to create music that other people enjoy. The modern (mainstream) rap formula today is "1) brag about how well you have it 2) repeat until the end of the song". They ALL do this. ALL OF THEM. 2) It doesn't matter if Minaj is a feminist or if Macklemore is supportive of the LGBT community. If they both respectively put out a track that sucks balls, I'm not going to judge its quality based on whether or not its supposed to help people. If the song is TERRIBLE, then its TERRIBLE. And if they try to defend that terribleness with "forget the haters" then they are MORONS for doing so. 3) I'm not disregarding any hard work that they do, even though their hard work boils down to "making tons of money every single day with millions of fans who support what I do." Really grueling stuff there. Also, it DOES matter what I think, because I am the type of person that rappers need to listen to: I am able to judge the quality of their content to point out their flaws; I'm NOT an ass kisser who tells them everything they do is great or to "forget the haters". Why do you think music critics EXIST? Are we supposed to think that everything we hear in music is great? NO. And that goes for things other than music too. 4) "1 in 20 people" "99% of the time" You know what, if you want to throw out statistics like that, give me some proof to that, or else now you're just trying to lie to me. 5) What I'm doing is not "hating". IS THAT A PROBLEM, MRS. PINK? 1) Obviously they don't because Macklemore is worth $16 million, Nicki Minaj is worth $45 million, Lil Wayne is worth $140 million, and Jay Z is worth $520 million. YOU may not like their music but there are millions who do, so you don't get to decide whether or not they're any good to everyone. And no, believe it or not, the majority of the criticism is mean and baseless and it has literally nothing to do with their lyrics. The articles (albeit primarily insulting female rappers rather than males) that mock them for their clothing choices, their fan base, their car choices, their friends - literally every topic under the sun. That has nothing to do with their style of music - that's being mean (and seriously, some of the stuff in People magazine is nasty) for the sake of being mean. 2) That's funny because as I pointed out before they're worth millions upon millions of dollars, so obviously the songs are not "terrible" to a tremendous amount of people. They are telling their fan base (on average 13-25 years old) to disregard people who are jokes to them for no reason. That's the age where a lot of people are dealing with bullies in their lives so you know what? A lot of them like hearing that even some talented famous person deals with haters and that you can be successful and happy anyway. If it's making lots of other people happy and not affecting you at all then you don't really have any right to be mad. 3) Are you actually saying that rappers barely work? Writing and recording and making music videos for new music, going on tour, scheduling tv/radio/etc appearances, going to autograph signings, and being constantly criticized all while having a family life is easy? You could have fooled me. Being famous sounds a lot easier than it is. None of them are surrounded by ass kissers?? They get told the criticism all the time, and they make efforts to improve. That's a completely baseless assumption. It seems like you're mad simply because if they could they wouldn't listen to you - well, the fact is, they can't make everyone happy. And you're not one of the happy ones, but they've listened to other advice that's made millions of people happy. I'm sorry that you don't get to boss every rapper around, I really don't know what else to tell you. 4) Oh sorry let me just google the article that presents the exact statistic of how many people use hater seriously instead of sarcastically. I apologize for the massive 1%-5% discrepancy in my estimated statistic. 5) Nobody's using it to excuse their flaws I literally have no idea where you're getting that from? They might use it to excuse your opinion, for example - because it's an opinion and if they disagree they don't have to change their music style to make you happy. I think you're going to be hard-pressed to find the rapper that thinks they're perfect - people have stage personas, but they're real people. Hell, Ke$ha was checked into rehab a while ago because the media made her feel so bad about her weight that she had anxiety attacks. Just because they sing about something doesn't mean they actually think they're some walking god. Yes, that is a problem - luckily it's not one that any rappers I know of are dealing with. Thanks for asking (btw Mrs is only for married women, you would use Miss for an underage unmarried woman or Ms for an of age unmarried woman. And we should probably transition to a PM or end this discussion) 2 Godot and marukyu reacted to this

Akatsuki 47 Posted October 8, 2014 (edited) Haha, that was pretty good :') And I must say I have also resented that *shudder* term for a long time. Like you said, haters don't exist. Why don't we all reflect on how strong of a word 'hate' really is, instead of being arrogant and deciding everyone outside our way of thinking is a "hater"?
