How i Plan To Get Into American Comic Books

Step One: Watch cartoons like the DCAU, Young Justice, Spectacular Spiderman, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes etc

 

Step Two: Read crossover story arcs from MARVEL and DC before i officially decide which characters i'm interested in

 

Bonus Step: Read Some re-imaginings of superheroes, like Red Son, Dark Knight Returns, Kingdom Come, Batman - Year One

 

Step Three: Think of what superhero i'm really interested in reading

Would it not be easier, to simply read a few American comics and if you're into them, great, go read more, if you're not, don't force it

There were the absolute best when I was younger. Dunno how much they changed now though.

Comic books are usually smaller in length, while most manga (outside of those with one chapter published inside magazines) is typically an actual novel, making them more similar to Graphic Novels.  I reckon the use of the word "comic" when looking for a definition of Manga has more to do with trying to make it akin to a word Western Readers would recognize, the translation of the word manga is "Whimsical pictures" not "Japanese Comics".
